Following a first edition in June of 2016, PIASA is delighted to present the new Design Auction. This first session, groundbreaking in the Brazilian design auction market, naturally lead to a new vacation offering both historical works from the 1950s and contemporary creations. Brazil Design showcases close to 130 works by Joaquim Tenreiro, Sergio Rodrigues, Giuseppe Scapinelli, Zanine Caldas, Oscar Niemeyer, Carlos Hauner, Martin Eisler or Lina Bo Bardi, transporting us through a country and its culture.

As early as the 1940s, Brazilian designers began severing ties with European creations and invented and propagated a new trend corresponding to a culture open to nature. The 1950s to 1970s are the Golden Age of Brazilian design. Its creators are pioneers of global modernism and invent a new way of life through their works. Music, multiculturalism and nature form the essential principles of Brazilian design. Composed like a soft and languid Bossa Nova air, the Banco Tom by Alfio Lissi evokes the wondrous carioca sceneries. At the source of Brazilian cultural blending, Africa is celebrated by the Ndebele armchair, homage to the exquisite neck coil ornaments worn by the women of the Nguni people. Wood used both in indigenous culture and in artisanal carpentry, takes a luxurious and poetic aspect in the works of Paulo Alves or Ricardo Graham and Marcos Amato. Finally, the brothers Humberto and Fernando Campana create pieces at the boundaries of design and contemporary art. Their style is characterized by the appropriation and decontextualization of mundane objects. This approach can also be found in the work of Leo Capote or Brunno Jahara. Other designers offer a new point of view while relying on the names of staples of national design and architecture. Thus, Caique Niemeyer pays tribute to his great- grandfather through his creations.

Previously a little known realm of design, Brazilian creations are now widely recognized and sought after by collectors. Their rarity on the international market adds to the pleasure of their discovery. PIASA is proud to support this growing interest. DESIGN + ART DO BRASIL

The self-taught Jose Zanine Caldas, beginning as a model maker for famous Brazilian architects, rapidly accessed the status of designer. In 1949, he banked on industrialization by creating the Moveis Artisticos Z workshop. The 'Z' pieces of furniture present a great variety, while safeguarding their identity through their easily identifiable shape and the novel use of stratified wood. The two chaise longues, whose seatings are made of rope for one and of leather for the other, are icons of 'Z' furniture and of modern Brazilian design of the 1950s. : D.R. (1) : D.R. Photo

The SESC Pompeia is an ancient drum factory turned into a cultural center in the west area of São Paulo. It brings together theaters, exhibition rooms, sporting equipment, offices… The architectural project was developed by Lina Bo Bardi in 1977 and inaugurated in 1982. Because of its architecture and its design details, the factory became an icon of modern Brazilian architecture. Furniture designed by Lina Bo Bardi is still in use there. This pair of stools, for example, was designed specifically for the theater project. It is possible to identify elements reminiscent of the architectural structure of the building. Made of pine, these straight lines stand out even more due to the addition of a protruding detail on the back. In tribute to this incredible piece, Paulo Alves offers a modern reinvention with his Cadeira Bo (lot 102). A chair made to be iconic, but invisible. A type of wood that is common in Brazil, but rarely used for chairs. The straight lines referenced by Paulo Alves in all his Bo series show Lina's genius in the use of materials and their references. A chair for daily usage, which can also be used as a support, a side table, and even a bedside table. A light, but striking piece. : D.R. (1) : D.R. ƒ 22 . Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992)

The architect Lina Bo Bardi, who always defends a critical and conceptual position, finds an ideal breeding ground for her modernist experiences in the post war São Paulo. In 1948, she invests the Studio de Arte Palma, for a short period. Associated with Piertro Maria Bardi and Giancarlo Palanti, she is in charge of the furniture, using Brazilian materials and other elements from the local popular culture. It is at this time that she creates the beautiful Cadeira de balanço and the small stools designed for the SESC Pompeia. The Cadeira de balanço was designed especially for her library in the Morumbi neighborhood in São Paulo. This armchair had a central position in the room.

The 1970s can be described as the years of Brazil's "economical miracle". The development of national industries subsidized by protectionist policies could have been a source of progress for the modern design sphere. However, new consumer habits and tastes hindered that progress. Indeed, other examples of modernization impose themselves, with a preference for mass production, pre-planned furniture, and synthetic materials. Another market then emerged, with new opportunities and possibilities for recognition. It is important to stress that at this time, the fame of renowned designers from the 1960s receded. One of the rare memories we still have of classical modern furniture of that time are the works of Oscar Niemeyer and Ana Maria Niemeyer, his daughter. The "Easy Chair" armchair is in fact the first work they would design together. We once again find the coherence between furniture design and architecture. A lounge armchair uses the new production techniques for an optimal comfort and a very elegant modernist profile. : D.R. (1) : D.R. Photo

In the field of music, variations refer to either the form by which the repetition of a melody is enriched or by changes to this melody in which one or more of its constituting elements – rhythm, tone, and mode, among others – cease to be the same every time the same melody is repeated. In these two instances, there remains the condition that the listener recognizes, with greater or lesser intensity, the original theme, that is, that he knows this comprises something which alters itself without a change to its essence. Perspective is used to create an optical illusion to imitate a sense of depth. The Horizonte bench was designed from this concept, the difference of width at each end creating a vanishing point. The feet, whose diameter is proportional to the size of the seating, follow the same optical objective. These modifications create a visual distortion of the object which seems to be put in perspective: the horizon imposes itself to the piece. The massive Freijo pine wood bench immerses itself in its environment elegantly. Its powerful color is uncommonly patinaed, and finely enhances the history of the wood.

129 The "Elos" bench is made of a colored mesh of plastic chains realized using industrial production and craftmanship. The chains are disassembled by hand. The pieces are then brought back together to shape a flexible network attached to the steel structure, suggesting the drapery of a colored fabric.
