Indoor Rules & Regulations

© 2015 Gameday Leagues, Inc. Facility and Equipment Care  Absolutely no food or drink in the gym. EXCEPTION: Water is allowed.  Children must remain on the sidelines and controlled. If a child is seen outside of the gym by a supervisor, their parent will be asked to seat them on the sideline for the remainder of the or take him/her home. Our supervisors do not moonlight as babysitters   No alcohol or tobacco. Smoking is prohibited on the premises of the Boys & Girls Club.  Non-marking shoes must be worn.  Volleyballs are provided for game use.  Players MUST BE 21+ years of age prior to league start date.

Overview  Each match is 3 TOTAL (not best of 3) or 50 minutes.  Games are self-officiated.  Teams are encourage to wear their respective team shirts (given out Week 2), but are not required.  A 10 minute graced period is allowed per match for a team to avoid a forfeit. After this point, teams may still play for fun, but the game will be marked as a forfeit in the league standings.  If time expires during a game, whichever team is ahead at that point wins the game.  Teams play rock, paper, scissors to determine who serves first or chooses side.  Both captains are responsible for final score reporting.

Gender Requirements/Forfeits/Substitutions  At least 2 men and 2 women must be on the court at all times. MAXIMUM of 3 men on the court at a time. Exception #1: If an injury occurs during a match, a team forgo the gender requirements only upon approval from the opposing captain.  A team forfeits the match (but may still play for fun) if they have fewer than 4 players, or do not meet the gender requirements.  Teams are limited to (2) non-rostered players per game, i.e. pickup player. Roster limit is 8 players.

Gameplay  Teams rotate with each new server.  Serves cannot be blocked or hit/spiked.  Before the ball is served, players must maintain their position integrity, e.g. a player in the left back position cannot start in the middle back position.  Once the ball is served (after server makes contact during serve), players may change positions; However, front row and back row must retain their respective positions, e.g. a back row player cannot hit in the front row.

 If a team hits the ball to an opponent’s side and the ball touches the ceiling, back wall, or hoops before the other team touches the ball, the point will count for the opponent. If the ball touches the ceiling or basketball hoops while on the same side as the team hitting and stays on that side, the ball is STILL IN PLAY.  Same-sex sets are legal.  Footsaves are legal.  3 hits max per side.  The ball cannot be contacted by a male player 3x in a row (e.g. Male passes, male sets, and male hit would be 3 contacts, thus an illegal play). o DIVISION EXCEPTION: Competitive division leagues are allowed to have 3 male players touches in a row.  Contact with the ball must be made on your own side of the net. Players cannot cross the plane of the net to block.  Teams are allowed one timeout per game.  Held Ball: The ball must be contacted cleanly and not held, lifted, pushed, caught, carried or thrown.  Contact with the net at any point is illegal.  Open-handed tips are legal.  The ball must cross the net within the net antennae.  Setting the serve is legal.

Scoring  All games are scored using the modified rally system (teams may score without serving).  Teams switch sides after each game. Teams DO NOT switch sides during a game.  All 3 games are scored to 25 (unless the time limit is reached). Teams must win by 2 in the first 2 games, and win by 1 in the 3rd. In the event of a , there will be a sudden death for the final point to decide the game winner.  Teams must win by two points in a game.

Serving  Servers may serve anywhere behind the end line.  The score must be announced prior to serving, listing his/her own team’s score first “13-8” or “8-13”.  ‘Let serves’, or a ball striking the net on a serve, will be considered “live”.  Serves can be overhand or underhand. Jump serves are not legal in Recreational or Beginner Divisions. o DIVISION EXCEPTION: Jump serves are allowed in competitive divisions.  2 of the same gender cannot serve in a row. o DIVISION EXCEPTION: For competitive divisions, 2 of the same gender may serve in a row, but NOT 3 of a gender.

Blocking  Simultaneous contacts: If two opponents simultaneously contact the ball over the block (hit/block), the ball remains in play and the team receiving the ball is allowed another 3 hits.  Players may block the ball over the net, as long as they do not interfere with the opponent’s play before or during a hit/attack.  Blocking does not count as a team hit.

 Players may not contact the ball twice unless it is contacted by the same player that blocked the ball. Hitting  A back row player cannot attack/hit the ball if the ball is above the net and positioned on top of or in front of the attack line.

Subs/Rotations  Teams may have substitutes rotate into a game in the server position only. Fouls/Violations/Penalties  Teams call their own fouls and violations during each match.  Players may be ejected by the supervisor for poor sportsmanship/bad attitudes. Note: Players ejected are also ineligible for the next match.  Any contact with the net is a fault.  Players must remain on their own side of the net, including beneath the net. If a player ventures onto the opposing team’s side, even accidentally, and thus interferes with the play, the play is ruled a fault and the opposing team is awarded a point.
