EASY PEASY FILE FOLDER TRAVEL JOURNALS

Made by members of the Cincinnati Book Arts Society for an online class August 2020 Amy Crawford Barns Cheerios box, staples, washi tape, duct tape, PVA, copy paper, rubber stamps, ink, a Bic pen, photos, waxed thread 5” x 6 ½”

Because of travel restrictions this summer, I traveled local county back roads in search of barns to sketch. In the pockets of this journal are the photos of the various barns and the resulting pen & ink sketches. I folded a used green file folder to create a pocket on one side. Pamphlet stitched paper on the back for notes. Using stamps, correspondence, words and pictures cut from junk mail to create a book showing some of the changes due to the Pandemic. Strengthened folds with Tyvek before stitching. This is still a work in progress. Created a closure/tie from an old scrap of material. I started off with the idea of making a book where I could keep lists of books to be read and books that have already been read. I used half a file folder and some sheets of lined notebook paper from which I cut off the holes as it made the paper fit and look better. The result is two usable signatures and a pocket. The file folder started as a regular plain manila folder to which red acrylic paint was applied. After that dried blue acrylic and some gold were applied and plastic wrap was scrunched on the still wet paint. That was allowed to dry overnight. Two signatures were sewn in, a pocket was made by sewing part of the bottom and a button closure was attached. Judy Dominic It’s Green! It was all about using what I had on hand, down to the day-old brewed coffee. Not sure I will need all those pages for journaling, but I liked how they all went together. Since we had titled the class as a ‘TRAVEL’ journal, the most traveling I had been doing was in my immediate surroundings, so I had a bit of fun with it. I did forget about the laundry room! Marguerite Katchen Leftovers Bristol board, various papers, waxed linen thread, elastic 3" x 4.5”

This is the journal I made 8/8 with the CBAS study group. I used white Bristol Board, instead of a file folder. This caused the book to be more narrow than one made with a file folder would have been. I folded the Bristol Board to make pockets and sewed the end pieces together with blue waxed linen thread so the last pockets would close. The other pockets are finished with orange linen thread which also made the pamplet stitch fastening for the signatures. The bottom pocket fold went with the grain of the Bristol Board but the folds for the pages did not. Therefore, even when pressed under 20 lb weight, the book tends to spring open. An orange piece of elastic was used to keep the book closed. The front is decorated with scraps of paper. It became a dos-a-dos structure. Front signatures are 24 lb. Neenah Classic Crest. The back signature is leftover 140 lb watercolor paper. It’s always nice to have a little notebook to jot down things like grocery lists, errands, things you need to remember while you’re out and about. This little folder is designed to carry important travel documents like passport, boarding pass and tickets, schedules, city maps, and daily journal and is easy to slip into purse or carry on bags.
