Classic Poetry Series Fyodor Sologub - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Fyodor Sologub(1 March 1863 – 5 December 1927) Fyodor Sologub was a Russian Symbolist poet, novelist, playwright and essayist. He was the first writer to introduce the morbid, pessimistic elements characteristic of European fin de siècle literature and philosophy into Russian prose. <b>Early Life</b> Sologub was born in St. Petersburg into the family of a poor tailor, Kuzma Afanasyevich Teternikov, who had been a serf in Poltava guberniya, the illegitimate son of a local landowner. His father died of tuberculosis in 1867, and his illiterate mother was forced to become a servant in the home of the aristocratic Agapov family, where Sologub and his younger sister Olga grew up. Seeing how difficult his mother's life was, Sologub was determined to rescue her from it, and after graduating from the St. Petersburg Teachers' Institute in 1882 he took his mother and sister with him to his first teaching post in Kresttsy, where he began his literary career with the 1884 publication in a children's magazine of his poem "The Fox and the Hedgehog" under the name Te-rnikov. Sologub continued writing as he relocated to new jobs in Velikiye Luki (1885) and Vytegra (1889), but felt that he was completely isolated from the literary world and longed to be able to live in the capital again; nevertheless, his decade-long experience with the "frightful world" of backwoods provincial life served him well when he came to write The Petty Demon. -

Religion and Poetry: Latvia's J�nis Rainis Arvids Ziedonis, Jr., The Religious Philosophy of Jánis Rainis. Waverly, Iowa: Latvju Grammata, 1969. 344 pp. Janis Rainis' status as one of the most remarkable Latvian writers has been secure for over sixty years now. It was he who raised Latvian poetry and drama to a level of artistry never before attained. To this day, literary critics and historians have been trying to place his strongly individualistic creative out- put into definite literary schools, but not with a great deal of success. Spiritually and aesthetically he is the best example in modern Latvian letters of the organic relationship between talent shaped by tradition and talent creating tradition. Rainis' poems are the common patrimony of most Latvian anthologies, and most of his fifteen dramas (all but two written in blank verse) are constantly per- formed on Latvian stages and occasionally abroad. Five of Rainis' dramas have been set as operas, and his lyrics have also attracted composers. A book-length study in English of this Latvian writer and his work has long been overdue, for in the English-speaking countries the true greatness of Rainis' literary genius has not been fully recognized. More of Rainis' works have been translated into Russian, German, Lithuanian, Estonian, Ukrainian, Belorussian, and even into Georgian, than into English. The primary objective of professor Ziedonis' monograph, originally a Temple University dissertation, is to shift the emphasis from the usual treatment of Rainis as an artist and a Latvian nationalist to a fuller appreciation of Rainis as a founder of a "new religion." To be sure, this is not an original idea con- cerning the poet. -

Mirrors in Russian Decadent and Symbolist Prose: Valery Briusov and Dmitry Merezhkovsky Abstract Examining mirror imagery in the prose works “In the Mirror” by Valery Briusov and The Resurrected Gods: Leonardo da Vinci by Dmitry Merezhkovsky, both published in 1902, this article situates the Russian Decadent and Symbolist associations of the mirror in the pan-European literary and philosophical context. The mirror constitutes the threshold of manifold oppositions, including life and art, life and death, and reality and dream or imagination. It is a realm of alternative reality, magical and seductive, as in Briusov’s story, or potentially both demonic and divine, as in Merezhkovsky’s novel. -

Nr. 4(90), p. 332–341, © Lietuvos mokslų akademija, 2012 Representation of Latvia and Latvians in Contemporary Latvian Literature MAIJA BURIMA Institute of Comparative Studies, Daugavpils University, Vienibas Str. 13 – 318, Daugavpils, Latvia E-mail: [email protected] Concepts ‘Latvia’ and ‘Latvians’ in literature are more closely than others related to tendencies of culture policy and historical and socio-economic changes. In Latvian literature there are not so many texts focusing on the Latvian nation and state as a phenomenon. The article regards representations of the national / state identity as the central strategic manifestations in contemporary Latvian literature. This strategy gets activa- ted in complicated or dramatic moments of the history for the nation / state. Recent Latvian literature brings out the representation of two identity aspects: personal identity – individual self-perception based on one’s physical, intellectual, and mo- ral peculiarities; group or social identity – individual self-characteristics based on belonging to particular social groups – ethnic, professional, etc. Within one literary work just one identity aspect may be represented but they may also overlap. At the turn of the first and second decades of the 21st century a number of texts were published with titles foregrounding the lexical units “Latvians”, “we” or some significant signs of the national culture. Aspects of the collective identity are widely discussed in several works of fiction the titles of which suggest common social and mental structures of contemporary Latvian population as preconditions for the exis- tence of identity communities. The texts analyzed in the paper include Kārlis Vērdiņš’s poetry prose collec- tion “Es” [I] (2008), Guntars Godiņš’s poetry collection “CV”, Nora Ikstena’s sketch “Par mums” [On Us] (2009), Vilis Lācītis’s novel “Strojka ar skatu uz Londonu” [Construction Site with a View of London] (2010), Otto Ozols’s novel “Latvieši ir visur” [Latvians are Everywhere] (2010). -

The new approaches reject the positivist and orthodox Marxist traditions that regard literature as a mimetic reflection of an underlying "reality," "internalist" histories that isolate the discipline from the surrounding culture, Hegelian, organicist, and teleological generalizations of periods and cultures, reductive national perspectives, and, last but not least, histories dominated by "grand narratives." But if there is a reasonable consensus on the critique of the past, new histories have been slow in coming and controversial when published. Witness the series that the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA) has been preparing on the history of literature in the European languages, and the French literary history that Denis Hollier and his collaborators have published-both of which we shall discuss later in this paper. The following essay delineates the contours of an ongoing project on the history of the literary cultures in East-Central Europe, which will be published by John Benjamins Press in three volumes. -

Writing A New Self and Creating a Sense for Emotional Belonging: The Case of Nadezhda Teffi, a Russian Writer in Interwar Paris Natalia Starostina, Young Harris College When considering the great upheavals of twentieth-century European history, the experience of Russian émigrés in interwar France may strike the historian as a dramatic, sudden, and deep change in luck.1 Many Russian émigrés who ended up on the shores of the Seine after 1917 were the members of the Russian intellectual and political elites who had enjoyed the life of prestige, wealth, refined social and cultural opportunities in tsarist Russia. For many Russian émigrés, life as they knew it was turned upside down when they left Russia. They had to begin their life anew, to rebuild their identities, and to reinvent the self. The experience of women émigrés was especially difficult. Jānis Lazdiņš Faculty of Law, University of Latvia Professor at the Department of Legal Theory and History E-mail: [email protected] The article focuses on the analysis of the understanding of “formula of happiness” of Jānis Pliekšāns (Rainis), lawyer, philosopher and the most famous Latvian poet. Rainis’ works were created at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries. This is the time when the legal consciousness of the Latvian State was evolving and the Republic of Latvia was proclaimed (1918). Rainis’ views in the philosophy of law were significantly influenced by the theory of Marxism and the fight for rights described by Rudolf von Ihering. Rainis’ “formula of happiness” means interminable self-improvement in the struggle for personal happiness with the aim of leading the whole humanity towards happiness. Predominantly, lawyers limit themselves to search for justice as the purpose of law in accordance with the particular conflict of laws. Only the right to pursuit of happiness, included in The Declaration of Independence of the Unites States of America (1776),1 has gained global fame. -

The case of Latvian poet, playwright and politician, Rainis, is being explored. Analysis of his intentions in two stages of politically relevant activities, i.e. stage of unattached intellectual and the politician, reveal continuity.This continuity in combination withreluctance to set a new agenda for the new career contributed to the clash of identities. Furthermore, Rainislaid claim on holding the authority of leader which is related to the symbolic power. INTRODUCTION The subject of involvement of intellectuals,agents representing various artistic and aesthetic fields, in socially political processes of non-free societies, has earned an extensive scholarly attention in various contexts. One has to agree that fields of cultural and scholarly work provide a comparatively high degree of freedom under repressive regimes,thus their political relevance may be invokedper se(Cvijetic 1999). However, empirical studies give evidence for the fact that intellectuals who were once fighting against the repressive regime, use to change the sides of entrenchment after the regime overthrow, and turn into state government officials or politicians under the newly-established or the restoreddemocratic regime.
