Mapping tourist accommodation in the Balearics might help spatially explain the important socio-spatial transformation of a small archipelago in the Western Mediterranean. This paper analyses the diffusion of tourist accommodations as the main vehicle for urbanization since the 1950s. The tourism production of space has gone in parallel to economic cycles with particular urban expressions related to the different regimes of accumulation. Over time, as access to sea, air, and road transport, availability of investment capital, and institutional support has changed, so too have the directions of urban tourism development in the islands. Introduction Urbanization occurs differently on different kinds of islands. Islands specializing in tourism services may feature distinctive urbanization patterns due to the dynamics of this particular industry, which involves a coincidence between spaces of production and consumption. The spatial factors affecting islands play a variety of roles here, both increasing the amount of coastline (which has proven so attractive to mass tourism) and conditioning the means of transport and access to tourism sites. -

Remembrance Stones Press Release
! REMEMBRANCE STONES IN MALLORCA Gunter Demnig will place the first REMEMBRANCE STONES in Spain, as well as several STOLPERSTEINE in Mallorca anD Menorca in December 2018. Gunter Demnig will install 14 Stolpersteine in Palma de Mallorca on 16th December 2018. He will also place the first of 20 Remembrance Stones in Palma and several other munici- paliFes (including Inca, Soller and Esporles) on 16th, 17th and 18th December. On 19th De- cember, he will lay three further Stolpersteine in Ciutadella de Menorca. The Stolpersteine will be placed for Republicans who were killed by the Nazis in Mau- thausen, Gusen or other camps in Austria. Gunter Demnig has already placed Stolpersteine in Barcelona and several places. Next year, he is due to place the first in the Spanish capital Madrid, as well as in Valencia and several more in Catalunya. Stolpersteine are placed for all vicFms of the Nazis from 1933 to 1945. In Spain, the Stolpersteine so far have been placed for Republicans who took refuge in France during the Spanish Civil War. Tens of thousands were interned in French camps. A]er the German oc- cupaFon of France, some 30,000 were conscripted for forced labour and/or sent to concen- traFon camps in Austria and Germany. Thousands were killed. Remembrance Stones are a pilot project set up by the STIFTUNG SPUREN-GUNTER DEMNIG (Gunter Demnig’s foundaFon) to commemorate people who were not direct vicFms of the Nazis. The first will be placed for 20 mayors and poliFcians who were arrested, imprisoned, tortured and murdered by NaFonalist opponents of the Republic, supporters of General Francisco Franco. -

Nargolwalla Doctor of Philosophy Department of Anthropology University of Toronto 2009 Abstract The origin and diversification of great apes and humans is among the most researched and debated series of events in the evolutionary history of the Primates. A fundamental part of understanding these events involves reconstructing paleoenvironmental and paleogeographic patterns in the Eurasian Miocene; a time period and geographic expanse rich in evidence of lineage origins and dispersals of numerous mammalian lineages, including apes. Traditionally, the geographic origin of the African ape and human lineage is considered to have occurred in Africa, however, an alternative hypothesis favouring a Eurasian origin has been proposed. This hypothesis suggests that that after an initial dispersal from Africa to Eurasia at ~17Ma and subsequent radiation from Spain to China, fossil apes disperse back to Africa at least once and found the African ape and human lineage in the late Miocene. The purpose of this study is to test the Eurasian origin hypothesis through the analysis of spatial and temporal patterns of distribution, in situ evolution, interprovincial and intercontinental dispersals of Eurasian terrestrial mammals in response to environmental factors. Using the NOW and Paleobiology databases, together with data collected through survey and excavation of middle and late Miocene vertebrate localities in Hungary and Romania, taphonomic bias and sampling completeness of Eurasian faunas are assessed. -

Results Si was significantly and negatively related to the mass of the ancestral or mainland population across all mammals and within all orders of extant mammals analysed, and across palaeo-insular (considered separately) mammals as well. Insular body size was significantly smaller for bats and insectivores than for the other orders studied here, but significantly larger for mammals that utilized aquatic prey than for those restricted to terrestrial prey. -

Published 10 December 1999 The Mio-Plio-Pleistocene faunal succession of Sardinia is discussed in the context of paleogeography and stratigraphy. Some material of a particular stratigraphic or taxonomic interest is described. T h e name Sus sondaari is introduced to replace the preoccupied name Sus nanus. Sardinia may have be- come an island during the Late Oligocene. Some of the Early Miocene taxa on Sardinia may have sur- vived there from the time when Sardinia was still connected with the main land, others arrived later to the island. Part of these taxa survived till the Late Miocene, when Sardinia (and Corsica) became con- nected to the island of Tu s c a n y. At this moment faunal exchange occurred between these areas. Some of the taxa known from the Baccinello area may have come from Sardinia. -

The Amekchoud profile covers the Aït Ouglif and Aït Kandoula alluvial formations that form the bulk of the Ouarzazate basin fill, indicating an age between the upper Langhian and the Messinian (Miocene). Data obtained in the previously unexplored Hadida formation profile covers the oldest terms of the foreland basin succession, unfortunately the low quality of the magnetic record only allows proposing a tentative age between the middle Lutetian and an undetermined middle to late Eocene. The correlation of the Amekchoud profile is based on the recognition of the long C5n chron (Tortonian) in the middle part of the section studied and a new vertebrate locality of upper Tortonian age found in the upper part. These results indicate a discontinuous record of foreland basin development in the southern Atlas domain from mid Eocene to late Miocene times, punctuated by an intermediate large hiatus of 20-25 ma (late Eocene to mid Miocene). -
