Lutz4 Abstract Background: The effects of climate on plant species ranges are well appreciated, but the effects of other processes, such as fire, on plant species distribution are less well understood. We used a dataset of 561 plots 0.1 ha in size located throughout Yosemite National Park, in the Sierra Nevada of California, USA, to determine the joint effects of fire and climate on woody plant species. We analyzed the effect of climate (annual actual evapotranspiration [AET], climatic water deficit [Deficit]) and fire characteristics (occurrence [BURN] for all plots, fire return interval departure [FRID] for unburned plots, and severity of the most severe fire [dNBR]) on the distribution of woody plant species. Results: Of 43 species that were present on at least two plots, 38 species occurred on five or more plots. Of those 38 species, models for the distribution of 13 species (34%) were significantly improved by including the variable for fire occurrence (BURN). Models for the distribution of 10 species (26%) were significantly improved by including FRID, and two species (5%) were improved by including dNBR. Species for which distribution models were improved by inclusion of fire variables included some of the most areally extensive woody plants. Species and ecological zones were aligned along an AET-Deficit gradient from cool and moist to hot and dry conditions. -

Chaparral species of California, USA, exhibit three life history types in response to fire: non-sprouters (NS), facultative sprouters (FS), and obligate sprouters (OS). Adult non-sprouters are killed by fire; thus populations reestablish only through fire- stimulated seed germination and seedling recruitment. Facultative sprouters reestablish by both vegetative sprouting and seed germination. Obligate sprouters reestablish only by vegetative sprouting and do not recruit seedlings post-fire. Previous data suggest that post-fire NS and FS seedlings reestablish as open-canopy gap specialists, whereas OS seedlings primarily reestablish in deep shade during fire-free intervals. Their non-refractory seeds are killed by fire. We hypothesized that these differences in life history, compared within the same taxonomic group, would result in a range of relative resistance to water stress such that NS . FS . OS. Updated Biological Inventory Report for the Rancho Malibu Religious Memorial Project, 4000 Malibu Canyon Road, City of Malibu, California
November 18, 2015 Project Number 15-02065 Jake Jesson Assistant Project Manager Green Acres, LLC 22837 Pacific Coast Highway #775 Malibu, California 90265 Via Email: [email protected] Subject: Updated Biological Inventory Report for the Rancho Malibu Religious Memorial Project, 4000 Malibu Canyon Road, City of Malibu, California This letter report updates the previous findings of the Biological Inventory Report (BIR) for the Rancho Malibu Religious Memorial Project due to a change in the project scope and grading plan. An Environmental Impact Report (EIR) was first prepared for this site (CBA, 1997) and certified by the City of Malibu City Council (March 23, 1998) along with conditions of approval contained in Conditional Use Permit No. 96-005. A BIR was prepared for the project site by Rincon Consultants, Inc. (Rincon) in May 2007 for plans to build a 146 room luxury hotel. An updated report was prepared in September 2011 (Rincon) as part of a Coastal Development Permit (CDP) application and Site Plan Review. In February of 2012, Rincon conducted a native tree assessment. In 2011 a reconnaissance survey and BIR update was prepared by Rincon to support the applicant’s plans to change the project from the development of a luxury hotel to a religious memorial and cemetery. This BIR (October 2015) documents the changes in potential impacts to special-status biological resources as they relate to the revised scope and grading plan for the proposed religious memorial and cemetery. PROJECT LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The project site is located in the central portion of the City of Malibu, immediately north of Pacific Coast Highway between Malibu Canyon Road and Civic Center Way at 4000 Malibu Canyon Road. -

It is closely related to Baccharis plummerae subsp. plummerae but differs in having narrow, subentire, typically conduplicate, sparsely villous to mostly glabrous leaves with glands occurring in depressions on the adaxial surface, more cylindrical inflorescences, and a distribution in open chaparral vegetation. The new taxon shares some characteristics with B. plum merae subsp. glabrata of northwestern San Luis Obispo County, e.g., smaller leaves, reduced vestiture, and occurrence in scrub habitat, but the two taxa appear to have developed independently from B. -

Resistance to xylem cavitation depends on the size of xylem pit membrane pores and the strength of vessels to resist collapse or, in the case of freezing-induced cavitation, conduit diameter. Altering these traits may impact plant biomechanics or water transport efficiency. The evergreen sclerophyllous shrub species, collectively referred to as chaparral, which dominate much of the mediterranean-type climate region of southern California, have been shown to display high cavitation resistance (pressure potential at 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity; P50). We examined xylem functional and structural traits associated with more negative P50 in stems of 26 chaparral species. We correlated raw-trait values, without phylogenetic consideration, to examine current relationships between P50 and these xylem traits. Additionally, correlations were examined using phylogenetic independent contrasts (PICs) to determine whether evolutionary changes in these xylem traits correlate with changes in P50. Co-occurring chaparral species widely differ in their P50 (À0.9 to À11.0 MPa). Species experiencing the most negative seasonal pressure potential (Pmin) had the highest resistance to xylem cavitation (lowest P50). Decreased P50 was associated with increased xylem density, stem mechanical strength (modulus of rupture), and transverse fiber wall area when both raw values and PICs were analyzed. -

Taxonomic relationships Ceanothus is a diverse genus with over 50 taxa that cluster in to two subgenera. C. crassifolius has long been recognized as part of the Cerastes group of Ceanothus based on morphology, life-history, and crossing studies (McMinn 1939a, Nobs 1963). In phylogenetic analyses based on RNA and chloroplast DNA, Hardig et al. (2000) found C. crassifolius clustered into the Cerastes group and in each analysis shared a clade with C. ophiochilus. In molecular and morphological analyses, Burge et al. (2011) also found C. crassifolius clustered into Cerastes. Cerastes included over 20 taxa and numerous subtaxa in both studies. In the 1500's California went through an 80 year drought. During the winter there were blizzards in Central California, the Salinas River froze solid where it flowed into the Monterey Bay. During the summer there was no humidity, no rain, and temperatures in the hundreds for many months. During one year in the 1840's there was no measurable rain in Santa Barbara. (The highest measured rainfall in an hour also was in Southern California, 11 inches in an hour) The same native plants that lived through that are still on the hillsides of California. California native plants that do not normally live in the creeks and ponds are very drought tolerant. The best way to find your plant is to check www.mynativeplants.com and do not water at all.
