  • Cinco De Mayo
    Cinco De Mayo Mexico’s most famous military victory took place on the morning of May 5th, 1862. On that day, about 4,000 Mexican soldiers fought off and drove back the much larger French army at the village of Puebla, Mexico. The French, along with Spanish and English troops, landed in Mexico to help collect debts from President Benito Juarez. The English and Spanish made deals and left, but the French stayed because they had designs on the Mexican empire. They marched from the port of Vera Cruz,, intending to attack Mexico City to the west. The Calvary, led by Colonel Diaz, who would later become Mexico’s president and dictator, went out to meet the French, who were unable to overcome them. The French militia tried to overcome the Mexican militia who were on foot, but a serendipitous thunderstorm frightened hundreds of cattle in the area, who started to stampede, helping to drive the French away. Cinco de Mayo is an annual holiday celebrating that victory, as well as Mexican freedom and liberty. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated throughout Mexico, as well as in parts of the United States. States with large populations of people with a Mexican heritage, like Texas and Southern California, frequently celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Fun Facts: • Cinco de Mayo means 5th of May in Spanish. It is the anniversary of a battle that took place between the Mexicans and the French in 1862. • Mexico had many rich natural resources and gold, which made them vulnerable to other nations that wanted to take advantage of these riches.

The Acquisition Of Sociolinguistic Variation In A Mexican Immigrant Community Abstract In language change originating within the speech community, child acquisition begins with “faithful transmission of the adult system” (Labov 2007:346). On entering their peer group, children participate in incrementation of change. Input from multiple generations of speakers is arguably necessary for children to advance a language change. With stable variable input, children are reported to acquire their parents’ probabilistic usage, then maintain it among peers. This dissertation asks what can be learned about the acquisition of sociolinguistic variation from a case where children receive limited generational evidence about their community’s linguistic variables. I examine whether these youngest speakers participate in incrementing change, or whether they reinterpret the pre-existing variation. Study participants are six families of immigrants from Puebla in the Philadelphia Mexican community, consisting primarily of a first generation of young adults and a growing second generation of children. Participants themselves recorded day-to-day family interactions, including speech from both caregivers and children.

But what's it all about? Most folks know enough Spanish to understand that "Cinco de Mayo" is May fifth, so it must be a special date in history, but why do Mexicans celebrate that particular day? What is Cinco de Mayo? On Cinco de Mayo, Mexicans remember the Battle of Puebla, fought on May 5, 1862. On that day, Mexicans won an important battle against the French army, which was invading Mexico. Why Was France Invading Mexico? France had a long history of interfering in Mexico's business, dating back to the famous Pastry War of 1838. In 1862, Mexico was having big problems and owed money to other countries, mainly France. France invaded Mexico to try and get their money. Why is the Battle of Puebla So Famous? Basically, the battle is famous because the Mexicans weren't supposed to win. The French army had about 6,000 soldiers and the Mexicans had only about 4,500. The French had better guns and were better trained. The French had already beaten the Mexicans a few times as they made their way to the city of Puebla, from which they planned to go to Mexico City. No one thought the Mexicans were going to win the battle…except maybe the Mexicans! What Happened at the Battle of Puebla? The Mexicans had made defenses around the city of Puebla.

He served as President the entire time except for 1880-1884, when he ruled through his puppet Manuel González. After 1884, he dispensed with the farce of ruling through someone else and re-elected himself several times, occasionally needing his hand-picked Congress to amend the Constitution to allow him to do so. During that time, Mexico modernized, adding plantations, industry, mines and transportation infrastructure. Poor Mexicans suffered greatly, however, and conditions for the most destitute were terribly cruel. The gap between rich and poor widened greatly under Díaz, and this disparity was one of the causes of the Mexican Revolution (1910-1920). Díaz remains one of Mexico's longest-lasting leaders, which raises the question: how did he hang onto power for so long? He Was a Great Politician: Díaz was able to deftly manipulate other politicians. He employed a sort of carrot-or- stick strategy when dealing with state governors and local mayors, most of whom he had appointed himself. The carrot worked for most: Díaz saw to it that regional leaders became personally wealthy when Mexico's economy boomed. He had several capable assistants, including José Yves Limantour, who many saw as the architect of Díaz' economic transformation of Mexico.
