In April 2015, UB President Satish K. Tripathi and Vice Provost for International Education Stephen C. Dunnett met with Hanban/ Confucius Institute Headquarters Director General Xu Lin in Beijing. Tripathi and Dunnett were accompanied by President Gong Huili and other senior administrators from Capital Normal University, UB’s Chinese partner in the Confucius Institute.

The meeting focused on UBCI’s three primary areas of work: (1) K-12 language programs, (2) community cultural events, and (3) teaching and research at UB. Xu particularly wanted to know about the positive impact the Confucius Institute has had on academic activity at UB, and invited Dr. Dunnett, who is also UBCI’s Board Chair, to speak on this topic at the North American Directors Conference in June.

At the invitation of Hanban Director General Xu Lin, UB Vice Provost for International Education and UBCI Board Chair Stephen C. Dunnett presented a keynote address at the June 2015 North American Directors conference in Honolulu. Confucius Institute Hosts Performance from Premier Music Conservatory in China 接待来自国内顶尖音乐学府的表演团

Some of China’s most talented musicians performed for an enthusiastic audience in a concert in UB’s Lippes Concert Hall on October 3. The ensemble of faculty and graduate students from one of China’s premier music schools—the Central Conservatory of Music (CCOM)—presented an impressive and broad repertoire of songs from China, Europe, and North and South America.

The Central Conservatory trains musicians at the highest levels to play and compose music in the Chinese tradition as well as music from around the globe, often creating an exciting fusion of Chinese and other music styles. The CCOM musicians were in North America on a Confucius Institute performance tour that included stops in Ottawa, Montreal, Buffalo, and Ann Arbor.

UB Confucius Institute Holds Mid-Autumn Festival/Confucius Day Celebration at UB 孔院日、中秋庆祝活动

The second most important holiday in China after Chinese New Year, the Mid-Autumn Festival occurs on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese calendar, which is the night of the full moon between early September and early October. It takes place around the same time as the birthday of Confucius, which is traditionally celebrated on September 28.

To celebrate both events, the Confucius Institute organized an open-air festival on a beautiful early-autumn Sunday on UB’s Student Union Field. The celebration on September 27 was part of a week-long series of Moon Festival/Confucius Day academic and cultural events.

People of all ages enjoyed calligraphy, music, food, language lessons, and a t-shirt design competition. In the Confucius Institute’s new offices in the adjacent UB Commons, attendees viewed an exhibition about the efforts of the Flying Tigers and China National Aviation Corporation in World War II. A second exhibition featured selected entries in the UB Confucius Institute photo contest.

More than 300 students, teachers, and administrators from UB and local K-12 schools, along with others from the Buffalo community, enjoyed learning about China and celebrating Chinese culture in a festive atmosphere.

Western New York Students Travel to Harbin with Chinese Bridge Summer Program

In July 2015, nine Western New York high school students traveled to Harbin and Beijing as part of the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp program sponsored and organized by Confucius Institute Headquarters. Oliver Derrah, a Chinese Bridge participant from Orchard Park High School, had this to say about his experience in China:

This summer I had the opportunity of a lifetime. I participated in the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp for U.S. High School Students; it is an opportunity for students grade 9-12 to take a trip to China in order to experience the language and the culture.

At the beginning of the trip, we stayed at Beijing Royal School and were able to see many high-interest attractions including a Confucian temple and the Hanban Headquarters.

Then, we traveled to the Northeastern city of Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, where we stayed at Harbin Engineering University. The dorms, the food, the campus, they were all amazing! There, we visited another Confucian temple, the largest in the world in fact. Confucius Institute Symposium Honors On May 5, the UB Confucius Institute and the Office of the Vice Professor George C. Lee for Pioneering Work Provost for International Education co-sponsored a symposium honoring George Lee’s pioneering work in developing the UB- Developing UB Relationships in China George C. In September, the Confucius Institute and Department of Art cosponsored a week-long visit by a delegation of artists and art historians from Tsinghua University, culminating in the September 10 symposium, “Rooted and Roaming: States of Contemporary Chinese Art.”
