    JAMES TAYLOR Over the course of his long career, James Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi- platinum awards for a catalog running from 1970’s Sweet Baby James to his Grammy Award-winning efforts Hourglass (1997) and October Road (2002). Taylor’s first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA’s elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. For his accomplishments, James Taylor was honored with the 1998 Century Award, Billboard magazine’s highest accolade, bestowed for distinguished creative achievement. The year 2000 saw his induction into both the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for James Taylor at Christmas. In 2008 Taylor garnered another Emmy nomination for One Man Band album. Raised in North Carolina, Taylor now lives in western Massachusetts. He has sold some 35 million albums throughout his career, which began back in 1968 when he was signed by Peter Asher to the Beatles’ Apple Records. The album James Taylor was his first and only solo effort for Apple, which came a year after his first working experience with Danny Kortchmar and the band Flying Machine. It was only a matter of time before Taylor would make his mark.     Cover Art Concept This IACHR report concludes that the United States has systematically failed to adopt preventive measures and to train its police forces to perform their duties in an appropriate fashion. This has led to the frequent use of force based on racial bias and prejudice and tends to result in unjustified killings of African Americans. This systematic failure is represented on the cover of the report by a tombstone in the bullseye of a shooting range target, which evokes the path of police violence from training through to these tragic outcomes. The target is surrounded by hands: hands in the air trying to stop the bullet, hands asking for help because of the danger that police officers represent in certain situations, and hands expressing suffering and pain over the unjustified loss of human lives. It is intended for trainees and for clinicians trained in other therapy approaches. I wrote it because existing books did not meet my students’ needs. Many classic introductions to psychoanalytic therapy are dated. They describe the psychoanalytic thinking of decades ago, not today. Others contain too much jargon to be accessible or assume prior knowledge that few contemporary readers possess. Still others have a partisan agenda of promoting one psychoanalytic school of thought over others, but trainees are ill-served by treating them as pawns in internecine theoretical disputes. Finally, some otherwise excellent books assume an interested and sympathetic reader— an assumption that is often unwarranted. Most students today are exposed to considerable disinformation about psychoanalytic thought and approach it with inaccurate and pejorative preconceptions. The title is a double entendre. “That was then, this is now” alludes to a central aim of psychoanalytic therapy, which is to help free people from the bonds of past experience in order to live more fully in the present.
