PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

Even today, reading the interview I did with him gives me chills. I loved that man with all my heart, he was my buddy. It’s hard for me to accept that the gentle man I knew and loved as my grandfather experienced the atrocities mentioned in his story. I can only imagine what four days R&R in Paris was like when you’d been fighting on the front lines during World War Two in Europe. You can read the interview with him in this book. Common Errors in English by Paul Brians [email protected]
Common Errors in English by Paul Brians [email protected] http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/ (Brownie points to anyone who catches inconsistencies between the main site and this version.) Note that italics are deliberately omitted on this page. What is an error in English? The concept of language errors is a fuzzy one. I'll leave to linguists the technical definitions. Here we're concerned only with deviations from the standard use of English as judged by sophisticated users such as professional writers, editors, teachers, and literate executives and personnel officers. The aim of this site is to help you avoid low grades, lost employment opportunities, lost business, and titters of amusement at the way you write or speak. But isn't one person's mistake another's standard usage? Often enough, but if your standard usage causes other people to consider you stupid or ignorant, you may want to consider changing it. You have the right to express yourself in any manner you please, but if you wish to communicate effectively you should use nonstandard English only when you intend to, rather than fall into it because you don't know any better. I'm learning English as a second language. Will this site help me improve my English? Very likely, though it's really aimed at the most common errors of native speakers. The errors others make in English differ according to the characteristics of their first languages. Speakers of other languages tend to make some specific errors that are uncommon among native speakers, so you may also want to consult sites dealing specifically with English as a second language (see http://www.cln.org/subjects/esl_cur.html and http://esl.about.com/education/adulted/esl/). -

Curriculum was developed for a 9-week institute which included training curriculum, student teaching, and administrative support. A thorough examination uf the institute was one of the main features of the program, which was attended by representatives of 14 states. A written evaluation was made by trainers, correctional officers, and management, and a followup study in the field evaluated the impact of the program on the various correctional institutions. Both evaluations showed that the program was beneficial, and the followup study illustrated that the institute did have an impact on prison training programs. (BC) /0.5'P1/1. Task-Space Admittance Controller with Adaptive Inertia Matrix Conditioning
Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems (2021) 101: 41 https://doi.org/10.1007/s10846-020-01275-0 Task-Space Admittance Controller with Adaptive Inertia Matrix Conditioning Mariana de Paula Assis Fonseca1 · Bruno Vilhena Adorno2 · Philippe Fraisse3 Received: 1 July 2020 / Accepted: 8 October 2020 / Published online: 4 February 2021 © The Author(s) 2021 Abstract Whenrobots physically interact with the environment, compliant behaviors should be imposed to prevent damages to all entities involved in the interaction. Moreover, during physical interactions, appropriate pose controllers are usually based on the robot dynamics, in which the ill-conditioning of the joint-space inertia matrix may lead to poor performance or even instability. When the control is not precise, large interaction forces may appear due to disturbed end-effector poses, resulting in unsafe interactions. To overcome these problems, we propose a task-space admittance controller in which the inertia matrix conditioning is adapted online. To this end, the control architecture consists of an admittance controller in the outer loop, which changes the reference trajectory to the robot end-effector to achieve a desired compliant behavior; and an adaptive inertia matrix conditioning controller in the inner loop to track this trajectory and improve the closed- loop performance. We evaluated the proposed architecture on a KUKA LWR4+ robot and compared it, via rigorous statistical analyses, to an architecture in which the proposed inner motion controller was replaced by two widely used ones. The admittance controller with adaptive inertia conditioning presents better performance than with a controller based on the inverse dynamics with feedback linearization, and similar results when compared to the PID controller with gravity compensation in the inner loop. -

A 2005 New Yorker cartoon jokes, ―Hippocrates off the record: First, treat no lawyers.‖2 The distrust and hostility are not new. A commentator noted in 1971: The problem presented is an atmosphere of distrust, fear and antagonism—not all of which is unfounded. -
James Taylor
JAMES TAYLOR Over the course of his long career, James Taylor has earned 40 gold, platinum and multi- platinum awards for a catalog running from 1970’s Sweet Baby James to his Grammy Award-winning efforts Hourglass (1997) and October Road (2002). Taylor’s first Greatest Hits album earned him the RIAA’s elite Diamond Award, given for sales in excess of 10 million units in the United States. For his accomplishments, James Taylor was honored with the 1998 Century Award, Billboard magazine’s highest accolade, bestowed for distinguished creative achievement. The year 2000 saw his induction into both the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and the prestigious Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. In 2007 he was nominated for a Grammy Award for James Taylor at Christmas. In 2008 Taylor garnered another Emmy nomination for One Man Band album. Raised in North Carolina, Taylor now lives in western Massachusetts. He has sold some 35 million albums throughout his career, which began back in 1968 when he was signed by Peter Asher to the Beatles’ Apple Records. The album James Taylor was his first and only solo effort for Apple, which came a year after his first working experience with Danny Kortchmar and the band Flying Machine. It was only a matter of time before Taylor would make his mark. Above all, there are the songs: “Fire and Rain,” “Country Road,” “Something in The Way She Moves,” ”Mexico,” “Shower The People,” “Your Smiling Face,” “Carolina In My Mind,” “Sweet Baby James,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight,” “You Can Close Your Eyes,” “Walking Man,” “Never Die Young,” “Shed A Little Light,” “Copperline” and many more. -

32. Mary’s Problem — Role-play 4 ~Mary has a problem. She can’t decide which graduate school to attend. She has applied to two 1schools and got accepted to both of them. One university is in America and the other is in China. The first school she applied to is Harvard University. Harvard is famous throughout the world and a Harvard degree opens many doors of opportunity. After she graduates there will be no problem for her to find a high paying job. She doesn’t know how she will pay the remaining tuition. Her father has worked hard to save for her education, but this would mean that he would have no money left and he is now getting old. She feels it would be a financial burden for her to go and she doesn’t want to leave her father and mother alone while she goes overseas for four years. She also has another consideration—her boyfriend. He attends Beijing Normal University and wants her to stay with him because he wants to marry her. He’s afraid that if she leaves for America she will never come back. Mary loves her boyfriend very much. She has also been accepted at Beijing Normal University.
