Stems often weak and clambering, often notably prickly or “sticky” (i.e., retrorsely aculeolate, “velcro-like”). Raphides present. Leaves opposite, mostly with leaflike stipules in whorls of 4, 6, or more, usually sessile or occasionally petiolate, without domatia, abaxial epidermis sometimes punctate- to striate-glandular, mostly with 1 main nerve, occasionally triplinerved or palmately veined; stipules interpetiolar and usually leaflike, sometimes reduced. Inflorescences mostly terminal and axillary (sometimes only axillary), thyrsoid to paniculiform or subcapitate, cymes several to many flowered or in- frequently reduced to 1 flower, pedunculate to sessile, bracteate or bracts reduced especially on higher order axes [or bracts some- times leaflike and involucral], bracteoles at pedicels lacking. Flowers mostly bisexual and monomorphic, hermaphroditic, sometimes unisexual, andromonoecious, occasionally polygamo-dioecious or dioecious, pedicellate to sessile, usually quite small. Calyx with limb nearly always reduced to absent; hypanthium portion fused with ovary. Corolla white, yellow, yellow-green, green, more rarely pink, red, dark red, or purple, rotate to occasionally campanulate or broadly funnelform; tube sometimes so reduced as to give appearance of free petals, glabrous inside; lobes (3 or)4(or occasionally 5), valvate in bud. Stamens (3 or)4(or occasionally 5), inserted on corolla tube near base, exserted; filaments developed to ± reduced; anthers dorsifixed. THE UNIVERSITY OF HULL Reconstructing Palaeoenvironments of the White Peak Region of Derbyshire, Northern England being a Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the University of Hull by Simon John Kitcher MPhysGeog May 2014 Declaration I hereby declare that the work presented in this thesis is my own, except where otherwise stated, and that it has not been previously submitted in application for any other degree at any other educational institution in the United Kingdom or overseas. ii Abstract Sub-fossil pollen from Holocene tufa pool sediments is used to investigate middle – late Holocene environmental conditions in the White Peak region of the Derbyshire Peak District in northern England. The overall aim is to use pollen analysis to resolve the relative influence of climate and anthropogenic landscape disturbance on the cessation of tufa production at Lathkill Dale and Monsal Dale in the White Peak region of the Peak District using past vegetation cover as a proxy. Modern White Peak pollen – vegetation relationships are examined to aid semi- quantitative interpretation of sub-fossil pollen assemblages. Moss-polsters and vegetation surveys incorporating novel methodologies are used to produce new Relative Pollen Productivity Estimates (RPPE) for 6 tree taxa, and new association indices for 16 herb taxa. RPPE’s of Alnus, Fraxinus and Pinus were similar to those produced at other European sites; Betula values displaying similarity with other UK sites only. RPPE’s for Fagus and Corylus were significantly lower than at other European sites. Pollen taphonomy in woodland floor mosses in Derbyshire and East Yorkshire is investigated. -

The Burren 2018 species list and trip report, 7th-12th June 2018 WILDLIFE TRAVEL The Burren 2018 s 1 The Burren 2018 species list and trip report, 7th-12th June 2018 Day 1: 7th June: Arrive in Lisdoonvarna; supper at Rathbaun Hotel Arriving by a variety of routes and means, we all gathered at Caherleigh House by 6pm, sustained by a round of fresh tea, coffee and delightful home-made scones from our ever-helpful host, Dermot. After introductions and some background to the geology and floral elements in the Burren from Brian (stressing the Mediterranean component of the flora after a day’s Mediterranean heat and sun), we made our way to the Rathbaun, for some substantial and tasty local food and our first taste of Irish music from the three young ladies of Ceolan, and their energetic four-hour performance (not sure any of us had the stamina to stay to the end). Day 2: 8th June: Poulsallach At 9am we were collected by Tony, our driver from Glynn’s Coaches for the week, and following a half-hour drive we arrived at a coastal stretch of species-rich limestone pavement which represented the perfect introduction to the Burren’s flora: a stunningly beautiful mix of coastal, Mediterranean, Atlantic and Arctic-Alpine species gathered together uniquely in a natural rock garden. First impressions were of patchy grassland, sparkling with heath spotted- orchids Dactylorhiza maculata ericetorum and drifts of the ubiquitous and glowing-purple bloody crane’s-bill Geranium sanguineum, between bare rock. A closer look revealed a diverse and colourful tapestry of dozens of flowers - the yellows of goldenrod Solidago virgaurea, kidney-vetch Anthyllis vulneraria, and bird’s-foot trefoil Lotus corniculatus (and its attendant common blue butterflies Polyommatus Icarus), pink splashes of wild thyme Thymus polytrichus and the hairy local subspecies of lousewort Pedicularis sylvatica ssp. -

Chromosome Counts for taxa in the Galium aparine species complex (G. aparine and G. spurium) from six locations in south- west Western Australia Final report to the Department of Agriculture and Food by the Department of Parks and Wildlife. December 2014 David J. Coates 1 Executive Summary Chromosome counts were carried out to determine the identification of taxa from the Galium aparine complex (G. aparine and G. spurium) collected from four sites in the Bridgetown area. In two of the sites two different morphological forms (large and small) were identified and it was postulated that these might represent occurrences of two different taxa at the same location. Previous cytological studies indicate that G. aparine is usually 2n=66 while G. spurium is 2n = 20. The chromosome counts on material from both forms and the four sites were uniformly 2n = 66. These results confirm that the forms found at all four sites are G. aparine and not G spurium. Background Galium aparine (Cleavers) and Galium spurium (False Cleavers) have been recorded from Western Australia with the Western Australian Herbarium records indicating nine collections of G. aparine and 15 collections of G. spurium each scattered across the southwest of the State. Gallium aparine occurs usually in moist, shaded habitats, whereas G. spurium favours sunnier drier habitats. Gallium aparine may be confused with G. spurium which is closely related and although they can be distinguished by certain morphological characteristics (Malik and Vanden Born 1988) differences are often cryptic with each species showing significant morphological variation depending upon the conditions under which the species are growing and the habitat in which they occur. -

It is largely the fruit of many pleasant hours of botanising by the author and a few others and as such reflects their particular interests. History of Plant Recording Peeblesshire is thinly populated and has had few resident botanists to record its flora. Also its upland terrain held little in the way of dramatic features or geology to attract outside botanists. Consequently the first list of the county’s flora with any pretension to completeness only became available in 1925 with the publication of the History of Peeblesshire (Eds, JW Buchan and H Paton). For this FRS Balfour and AB Jackson provided a chapter on the county’s flora which included a list of all the species known to occur. The first records were made by Dr A Pennecuik in 1715. He gave localities for 30 species and listed 8 others, most of which are still to be found. Thereafter for some 140 years the only evidence of interest is a few specimens in the national herbaria and scattered records in Lightfoot (1778), Watson (1837) and The New Statistical Account (1834-45). -

The Rubiaceae of Ohio
THE RUBIACEAE OF OHIO EDWARD J. P. HAUSER2 Department of Biological Sciences, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio Eight genera and twenty-seven species, of which six are rare in their distribu- tion, are recognized in this study as constituting a part of Ohio's flora, Galium, represented by fifteen species, is the largest genus. Five other genera, Asperula, Cephalanthus, Mitchella, Sherardia, and Spermacoce, consist of a single species. Asperula odorata L., Diodia virginiana L., and Galium palustre L., are new reports for the state. Typically members of the Rubiaceae in Ohio are herbs with the exception of Cephalanthus occidentalis L., a woody shrub, and Mitchella repens L., an evergreen, trailing vine. In this paper data pertinent to the range, habitat, and distribution of Ohio's species of the Rubiaceae are given. The information was compiled from my examination of approximately 2000 herbarium specimens obtained from seven herbaria located within the state, those of Kent State University, Miami Uni- versity, Oberlin College, The Ohio State University, Ohio Wesleyan University, and University of Cincinnati. Limited collecting and observations in the field during the summers of 1959 through 1962 supplemented herbarium work. In the systematic treatment, dichotomous keys are constructed to the genera and species occurring in Ohio. Following the species name, colloquial names of frequent usage and synonyms as indicated in current floristic manuals are listed. A general statement of the habitat as compiled from labels on herbarium specimens and personal observations is given for each species, as well as a statement of its frequency of occurrence and range in Ohio. An indication of the flowering time follows this information. -

Abstract Galium sinaicum is a wild medicinal plant in saint Catherine, Egypt. To distinguish apoptotic effect of G. sinaicum ethanol extract (GsEE), we examined the role of GsEE in inducing programmed cell death (PCD) of Allium cepa root meristematic cell (AcR). Cells was subjected to GsEE in definite concentrations (0.1,0.3, 0.5%) and duration (6, 12h), then PCD induction was assessed. Application of GsEE arrested the mitotic division of AcR with metaphase accumulation. Electron microscopy analysis demonstrated ultrastructural alterations of organelles verifying PCD hallmarks. Protein electrophoresis analysis of AcR revealed a change in protein profile of Allium cepa root, also quantitative analysis showed significant increase in nuclease activity enzymes that stimulated DNA laddering fragmentation. -
