SUMMER ISSUE

Editorial. If it’s Wimbledon it must be strawberry season; not sure that’s the right way round anyway. The Bus timetable for the 6A has changed again! The correct one* is on page 5. Lots going on this summer, hence the extra page of events. Firstly, a big thank you from the PAD Fund on page 13. Sue Uglow and some children have been busy on behalf of the RNLI; their report is on page 15. Ann’s thoughts for July and August are on page 10. The Wilsey is reopening! Their new advert is on page 16 with all the details. The advert for St Gennys Horticultural Exhibition is on page 19, so it’s time to get out your giant vegetables for examination! There is to be an extraordinary meeting of the Parish Council about the Wind Farm application, details of which are on page 21. I have received a disturbing report from Glenton about local crime. The warnings are on page 31. Gill has written about another of her favourite poets on page 26. The Happy Crafters and the Eden Youth Club are having a Craft Fayre; details can be found on page 28. Church are having their annual Flower Festival and the theme this year is Past & Present; the full details are on page 43. Lastly, have you checked out the magazine on line? Following the publica- tion of this issue the magazine is posted on warbstow.org in colour, sans the adverts. This means that you will be able to see the black and white or mainly grey pictures from the magazine in full colour. If you would like copies please email me at the address below. I hope you all have a great summer. Look out for the details of our late Summer family picnic. GJB *At the time of going to press!!

Panda patrol, spent today (Saturday 27th June) in competing for the Bolitho Shield, a competition for guides in Cornwall. They had to make a carrier for a raw egg, which had to be carried on a treasure hunt around Truro city centre. They then had to make a catapult for their egg, as well as present their pennant, to the judges and sing a song from World War One to which they had also choreographed a dance. The girls came a very worthy second in this grand final and had already come through two previous rounds to represent the North Cornwall division. Panda patrol have also won through to the grand final to represent Cornwall on the 11th July in the regional competition ‘Cookafun’, where they are given a bag of unknown ingredients and have to create a main and a desert from the contents. We have found people willing to run a rainbow unit, and also someone willing to lead a brownie unit although would love further adults to help run the unit, and therefore hope to have both within Jacobstow in September. If you would like further information please do contact Mary Andrew. If you would like your daughter aged 10 – 14 years to be involved in these adventures, please contact Mary Andrew on 01840 230006.

Fund raising has been slower of late but our impromptu plants sale at the bottom of Orchard House drive has raised nearly £100 thanks to all those who donated, particularly Ruth & David Puddick, and to those who stopped and bought plants. We have received a cheque from our local cardiac charity, Heartswell, who have sent us a welcome donation of £200. Many thanks. Grateful thanks must also go to Bob the Builder whose birthday bash on the 26th June raised a magnificent £150 for the PAD fund! Finally, a big thank you to Martin Brooks who gave us a cheque for £50, raised by contributions from his Pilates classes. Watch out for our forthcoming late summer event to be held in September . RROYALOYAL NNATIONALATIONAL LLIFEBOATIFEBOAT IINSTITUTENSTITUTE FFUNDUND RAISINGRAISING

From 2-12 June 2015, people all over the country went H2Only to raise money for the RNLI, including one person from Warbstow. Imagine drinking only water for 10 whole days – that means going without coffee, tea, juice, soft drinks, fizzy drinks or alcohol (eating normally of course). Could you do it? Well, I thought I ought to at least give it a go. Actually it wasn’t as bad as it sounds: every time I was tempted to weaken I thought about the lifeboat crews who never for a second hesitate and just get on with their jobs, no matter what the conditions. That kept me going, and I got used to it after about two days. I felt great at the end, too, having lost about 4lbs and sleeping like a baby! Thanks to the generosity of several people in our village and through Facebook I managed to raise £500, a really great result. Thanks to everyone who sponsored me. I can now reopen my social diary and accept offers to come and have a coffee! Sue Uglow A selection of children, encouraged by Warbstow School, decided of their own free will to enter the RLNI run at Bude on the 10th June. The runners aged 4 - 10 ran a 1 mile course. All of them finished the run and received a medal and goodie bag for the achievement. All of the entry fees and any additional money raised went to the RLNI. Well done to all the runners and to a few who tried to enter on the day but as the event was over subscribed did not manage to race. It’s a credit to all the children, parents and Warbstow School who supported them to compete in a professional event which was very well organised by the Bude Running Club "The Rats”. WWARBSTOWARBSTOW PPARISHARISH CCOUNCILOUNCIL

Thank you to everyone who wrote to me giving suggestions for topics to be included in the Warbstow Parish Plan. The two main issues raised are: the problem of speeding traffic through the village and the limited parking space outside the school, especially when events such as the school fete or the nativity play are being held. I am sure there are other topics that residents would like the Parish Council to include in the

Parish Plan.

Transparency Code for Smaller Authorities The Local Audit and Accountability Act 2014 that comes into effect this year applies to small authorities, such as Warbstow Parish Council, which have an annual turnover less than £25,000. Although the Act will exempt small authorities from routine external audits they will be subject to new transparency requirements. This means that we will have to publish: a. All items of expenditure of £100 b End of year accounts c. Annual governance statement d. Internal audit report e. List of councillor or member responsibilities f. The details of public land and building assets

g. Minutes, agendas and meeting papers of formal meetings

This does not mean that we will need to invest in larger notice boards in Warbstow, Canworthy Water and Trelash to take all this information but we will be relying on Paul Wood who was recently co-opted onto the council and agreed to take over responsibil- ity for managing the Warbstow Parish Council website. (http://www.warbstow.org/ parish-council) The website is still in early days of development but will be a vital asset

for the Parish Council to communicate with the community.

The Big Field Wind Farm – Planning Appeal Many of you will be aware that Good Energy Ltd is submitting an appeal to the Department for Communities and Local Government for the Big Field Wind Farm at Week St Mary. All representations must be with the DCLG by 28 July 2015. We are therefore organising an additional Parish Council Meeting on Wednesday 15 July at 7.30 pm at Canworthy Water Sunday School to consider whether there is any new information that should be considered and if it is appropriate to make further comments, or modify/withdraw our previous submission.

As usual any thoughts you have on these or other issues will be appreciated and can be emailed to me at [email protected] .

PPOETSOETS ANDAND PPOETRYOETRY by Gill Brown

Gillian Clarke

Born in Cardiff , Gillian Clarke has become one of the best loved and most wide- ly read writers of Wales. Besides being a poet she is a playwright, editor, broadcaster, lecturer and translator (from Welsh). She was appointed National Poet of Wales and in 2010 was awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for

Poetry. Her poetry is studied by GCSE and A Level students throughout Britain.

She lives with her architect husband and their children on a smallholding in Ceredigion, Wales . They raise a small flock of sheep, and care for the land using organic methods. Much of her poetry is about the, sometimes, harsh life of sheep farming in rural Wales, which I’m sure will resonate with many in our community, the mountainous land surrounding her home and the seasons with all their changing moods.

Here are a couple of my favourite poems from her collection entitled “Five Fields”. The first, ‘Barn’, captures the scene vividly of the barn she and her husband are building from his design and their hopes and dreams for the future on their farm. The second describes lambing and the saving of precious new lives.

Barn

1 Where the wheelbarrow slumps, a lake of rust in its lap, where rolls of chicken wire loll, caging a wilderness of nettle and yellowing grass, where leftover timber rots into cities of woodlice, you see a barn. Dumpy level, tape, clipboard, and I’m frozen to the bone. One dawn I’ll be glad of it, the graphite lines raised to a grid of steel on the icy sky, roof on, walls firm and me in some strawy corner with black-faced ewe, the smell of hay, of birth, their private cries and the first birds singing.

Page 20

2 In a field of fescue, timothy and Yorkshire fog, two swallows skim the pond for flies, rehearsing reflections for the long haul south. And you up there where the new barn rises, your hair bleached with summer, climbing the spaces of your own geometry, already see light fall through a window on orderliness: workbench, tools oiled and graded,

the timber stacked in aromatic piles.

You pull me into the sky to see the sea, the purple mountains of the north. You say, ‘We’ll have a telescope, a barn owl box’. I see us grow old under the poetry of stars, Listening for snow fall of owl. You steady me on the ladder’s trembling summit, all sky about us, earth askew and spinning, the lake upside down, swallows dreaming Africa in this first September chill.

A Very Cold Lamb

With a book to finish and umpteen things to do, here I am kneeling in straw, with a young ewe fussing and mothering about me, drying the lambs she slithered from her hot womb into the stream where we found them, took them for frozen or drowned. Working together, my hair-drier and her breath, we warm two shivering lambs from the brink of death. One is so cold it can’t open its mouth to cry for shaking, shaking hungry death by the throat, that fox with a taste for soft tissue, the bird of doom after each intricate beautiful brain, each eye. We work for an hour, the drier humming, the ewe licking their syrups with her passionate tongue, calling the blood to their limbs, liver, lungs, each womb as small as a nut. The two lambs strive. WARNING FOR RESIDENTS TO LOOK OUT FOR ROGUE TRADERS AND DOORSTEP CRIMINALS.

In the last few days reports have been received from across Cornwall concerning door step scams, hard-sell salesmen and “back-of-a-van” sellers. The number and range of frauds suggests that Cornwall is experiencing another spate of crime targeted at home-owners and in particular the elderly or vulnerable.

Fair trading manager Nigel Strick explained: “We have received complaints about gangs offering to tarmac driveways with ‘leftovers’, about mobility-aid/ recliner chairs salesmen spending hours and hours in consumers’ homes to try and force them to sign an order and about a gang selling ‘white goods’ out of the back of a van. Trading Standards already has a number of rogue trader investigations ongoing but we fear that the number of complaints we get is simply the tip of the iceberg as victims are often too embarrassed or afraid to come forward.

NOT SURE? DON’T OPEN THE DOOR

The best way to deal with these types of attack is for residents to ensure that you never deal with anyone who just turns up at the door or rings out of the blue without an appointment. Remember they may be initially just selling brushes and dusters but if you buy from them they may well then pass on your address as an easy target. “No Cold Caller” stickers and leaflets are available free of charge from Trading Standards.

NEED ASSISTANCE?

If you feel you have been the victim of a doorstep fraud or telephone/mail scam you can call in confidence Trading Standards for help 0300 1234 191

PS. I have asked the neighbourhood watch team to contact the Trading Standards on our behalf and stock a supply of the “No Cold Caller” stickers for distribution. Ed. Page 23

Youth club members have been getting crafty this month making items for our craft stall at Eden chapel in July. We have been learning the art of para- cording, marbling, shrinkle making and will be making pendants out of resin. We are hoping to boost our London fund so please come and support us.

We have also taken advantage of a beautiful Friday evening by going to the beach. We are so lucky to be able to do this. Some of our older and former members have now finished their exams and celebrated leaving school. We wish you all well in your chosen futures. Don't forget to keep in touch and let

us know how you're doing.

We are all looking forward to our summer break now with a group of us off to

Switzerland in August and then London, as a Youth Club group, in October.

Youth Club members are happy to invite any young people or adults along on a Friday evening 7pm at Eden Chapel to find out what we can do. We are al- ways interested if people have a talent they wish to share.

For more details about the Youth Club contact Alison Hoather on 781418

I would like to finally introduce the name of my wildlife rescue “Wildthingz” at Canworthy Water.

Many of you have been supporng me by giving all your newspapers. Please keep them coming!!!!!!

I would like to also say PLEASE can I ask you NOT to give the shredded paper anymore. I have learnt quite recently that office paper is too sharp to use on hedgehogs as it cuts their legs (Like paper cuts). So just normal newspapers please!!!!

A massive thank you to everyone who pops by regularly to deliver but I rarely get to see you. Any wildlife in trouble emergency number 07508532811 or 01566 781671 24hr answer phone

4th May The Rebel Cinema, Poundstock to see Far from the Madding crowd.

A good film. I think I preferred the version I saw some years ago.

10th May Mills Day. A visit to Bridge House Mill gardens, Bridgerule. Beautiful place, with a working mill. Wonderful gardens, including a splendid array of wild flowers. Rogation service at Hallwothy market in the evening.

15th May Film at The Rebel, Royal Night Out. A birthday treat for a friend.

23rd May The Wharf, Tavistock to see Joey The Lips. A truly talented band.

7th June Johnny Cowling concert at Week St. Mary, in aid of The Robert Johns Leukaemia fund. Johnny Cowling entertained in his unique way, supported by Twin Harmony.

8th June Flower girls meeting at my house, to discuss the Warbstow Flower Festival, being held at The Church, from 17th to 20th July. Theme, Warbstow Past and Present. Everyone left happy!!! 10th June RNLI run at The Rugby Club Bude. A large field of runners, and perfect weather conditions. Well done to our local competitors from Warbstow and District.

14th June Return to Bridgerule. Six gardens open to the public. A chance to see how the vegetable garden had progressed since we last visited Bridge House Mill. The baby pigs had also grown a lot. The tiny ducklings were cute. All the gardens well worth a visit.

20th June Country and Western evening at Tresmeer. Entertainment by Mark Hills. Very enjoyable.

26th June Warbstow School Fete. Weather meant most of the stalls in the hall. Good number of people, and the children enjoyed everything going on. David and Eric, No, I was not heading for the bouncy castle when you saw me. Maybe I went there after you had left?

27th June PenPont Players presentation of Charity Begins at Home, a comedy by Alex Bailey. Very well portrayed. Look forward to their pantomime production, 2016. Always a good laugh.
