2019 Remembrance Day 2 OVERVIEW OF UNIVERSITY OF GHANA REMEMBRANCE DAY

The University of Ghana has set aside two days in November each year as Remembrance Day: that is the first Friday of November for Muslim Prayers and the first Sunday of November for Christian Service, in remembrance of departed members of the University Community (i.e. past and present staff, students, alumni and friends).

Remembrance Day, formerly dubbed All Souls' Day Service, is an inter-faith service which grew out of the service held in memory of the late Chancellor of the University, Oyeeman Wereko Ampem II, in March, 2006. As the character of All Souls' Day Service was inter-faith, Muslim Prayers were incorporated into the service in the past years. These were offered by Imam Abubakari Baba, Imam of the Legon Central Mosque.

The offertory taken at these Services has so far gone to support needy and bright students registered with the University Students Financial Aid Office.

Since 2010, there has been a departure from previous years, with two days being set aside to remember departed members – one by the Muslim Community which takes place on the first Friday of November and the other on the first Sunday of November by the Christian Community. This is now the accepted format for the Memorial Services for departed members of the University community and now with a new name, Remembrance Day.

Thus, Remembrance Day provides the opportunity for all members of the University Community to remember their colleagues who departed this world during the academic year, since members are unable to attend the funerals of all departed colleagues, given the academic schedule of the University. The Chaplaincy Board collaborates with the Public Affairs Directorate to plan and organise Remembrance Day for both Muslim and Christian members of the community.

2019 Remembrance Day 6 HYMNS

HARK! HARK, MY SOUL! ANGELIC SONGS KING OF GLORY KING OF PEACE ARE SWELLING, 1 King of glory, King of peace, I will love Thee; 1. Hark! hark, my soul! Angelic songs are swelling, and that love may never cease, O'er earth's green fields and ocean's wave-beat shore; I will move Thee. How sweet the truth those blessed strains are telling Thou hast granted my request, Of that new life when sin shall be no more! Thou hast heard me; Thou didst note my working breast, Chorus Thou hast spared me. Angels of Jesus, angels of light, Singing to welcome the pilgrims of the night! 2 Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing Thee, 2. Onward we go; for still we hear them singing, and the cream of all my heart I will bring Thee. Come, weary souls, for Jesus bids you come; Though my sins against me cried, And through the dark, its echoes sweetly ringing, Thou didst clear me; The music of the Gospel leads us home. and alone, when they replied, Thou didst hear me. 3. Far, far away, like bells at evening pealing, The voice of Jesus sounds o'er land and sea; 3 Seven whole days, not one in seven, And laden souls, by thousands meekly stealing, I will praise Thee; Kind Shepherd, turn their weary steps to Thee. in my heart, though not in heaven, I can raise Thee. Small it is, in this poor sort 4. Rest comes at length; though life be long and dreary, to enroll Thee: e'en eternity's too short The day must dawn, and darksome night be past; to extol Thee. Faith's journeys end in welcome to the weary, And Heaven, the heart's true home, will come at last. CAPTAIN OF ISRAEL'S HOST, 5. Angels, sing on, your faithful watches keeping; AND GUIDE Sing us sweet fragments of the songs above, Till morning's joy shall end the night of weeping, 1 Captain of Israel's host, and Guide And life's long shadows break in cloudless love. Of all who seek the land above, Beneath Thy shadow we abide, The cloud of Thy protecting love; Our strength, Thy grace, our rule, Thy Word; Our end, the glory of the Lord.

7 2019 Remembrance Day 2. By Thine unerring Spirit led, I NEED THEE EVERY HOUR We shall not in the desert stray We shall not full direction need 1. I need Thee every hour, Nor miss our providential way; Most gracious Lord; As far from danger as from fear, No tender voice like Thine, While Love, almighty Love, is near. Can peace afford.

I need Thee, O I need Thee, ABIDE WITH ME! FAST FALLS Every hour I need Thee! THE EVENTIDE O bless me now, Savior, I come to Thee. 1. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; 2. I need Thee every hour, When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Stay Thou near by; Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me. Temptations lose their power, When Thou art nigh. 2. Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day; Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away; 3. I need Thee every hour, Change and decay in all around I see— In joy or pain; O Thou who changest not, abide with me. Come quickly and abide, Or life is vain. 3. I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power? 4 I need Thee every hour Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Teach me Thy will Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. And Thy rich promises 4. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; In me fulfil Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness; Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

5. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
