Untitled Instrumental #6 [DAT #30] 5 takes from the BLD Sessions 1995-1996. London’s Lost Rivers [Take #2 - vocals] Rough vocal track w. minimal backing mix. Lost Rivers of London [Take #1] Early version with vocals. Crackanthorpe; Sunrise Reading from Vignettes by Phil Barrington. London’s Lost Rivers [Take #1] Initial studio version with abrupt ending. [Cover Version] By The Psychogeographical Commission. Hidden Hydrology COIL's 'Lost Rivers' Studio Sessions COIL's "Lost Rivers" sessions were recorded during the Winter period of December 1995- February 1996 at COIL's own "Slut's Hole" studio in London. The day-long sessions were part of what ultimately became the "A Thousand Lights In A Darkened Room" album (at least as far as the vinyl pressing of that album went), though were apparently very rushed recordings (Jhonn later claimed that the full vocal version was written and recorded in one day to meet the “Succour” compilation deadline - Jhonn’s wraparound vocals were not redone for the BLD track). Around this winter time Jhonn Balance received a fax from David Tibet containing evocative passages from the Crackanthorpe "Vignettes" journal, originally published 100 years earlier (1896). Jhonn loved the sections he read and swiftly used passages as lyrics for the recording sessions to meet the Succour deadline (lifting text from the ‘On Chelsea Embankment’ and “In Richmond Park” sections of the small book). At the very same time as recording this track, the official (and long-awaited) 2nd Edition of the Nicholas Barton book called "The Lost Rivers of London" appeared in the bookshops of the city.

  • Off the Pedestal, on the Stage: Animation and De-Animation in Art
Off the Pedestal; On the Stage Animation and De-animation in Art and Theatre Aura Satz Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London PhD in Fine Art 2002 Abstract Whereas most genealogies of the puppet invariably conclude with robots and androids, this dissertation explores an alternative narrative. Here the inanimate object, first perceived either miraculously or idolatrously to come to life, is then observed as something that the live actor can aspire to, not necessarily the end-result of an ever evolving technological accomplishment. This research project examines a fundamental oscillation between the perception of inanimate images as coming alive, and the converse experience of human actors becoming inanimate images, whilst interrogating how this might articulate, substantiate or defy belief. Chapters i and 2 consider the literary documentation of objects miraculously coming to life, informed by the theology of incarnation and resurrection in Early Christianity, Byzantium and the Middle Ages. This includes examinations of icons, relics, incorrupt cadavers, and articulated crucifixes. Their use in ritual gradually leads on to the birth of a Christian theatre, its use of inanimate figures intermingling with live actors, and the practice of tableaux vivants, live human figures emulating the stillness of a statue. The remaining chapters focus on cultural phenomena that internalise the inanimate object’s immobility or strange movement quality. Chapter 3 studies secular tableaux vivants from the late eighteenth century onwards. Chapter 4 explores puppets-automata, with particular emphasis on Kempelen's Chess-player and the physical relation between object-manipulator and manipulated-object. The main emphasis is a choreographic one, on the ways in which live movement can translate into inanimate hardness, and how this form of movement can then be appropriated.

THROBBING GRISTLE THE REFORMATION YEARS NEW REISSUES SERIES OUT 13 DECEMBER 2019: Part Two: The Endless Not TG Now A Souvenir of Camber Sands “The Endless Not features some of the subtlest songwriting of TG's career, playing that knot of tension for all its worth and all the more disturbing for how pensive and restrained it feels” - Pitchfork “…more of a rebirthing than a reunion” - Tiny Mix Tapes “a gristly comeback”” - DJ Throbbing Gristle announce the next phase of their reissues series with the release of Part Two: The Endless Not, TG Now and A Souvenir of Camber Sands, out on CD and limited edition vinyl on 13 December 2019. In 2004 Chris Carter, Peter Christopherson, Genesis P. Orridge and Cosey Fanni Tutti reformed - 23 years after their mission was originally terminated - and between 2004 and 2007 the band released 14 new studio tracks and a live album of their appearance at ATP's Nightmare Before Christmas in Camber Sands. TG Now, originally released in 2004, was the sound of Throbbing Gristle testing the waters, seeing how it felt to work together again. The 4-track limited vinyl and CD release was available originally to attendees of the RE-TG Astoria event in 2004, their first performance together since 1981’s US tour. With Part Two: The Endless Not, the band returned to the studio after deciding they had unfinished creative business outside of the live arena. Released in 2007, over 25 years after their last studio album, the album was, as Tiny Mix Tapes put it, “…more of a rebirthing than a reunion”.

SVILOVA | WILLIAM BASINSKI DISINTEGRATION LOOP 1.1 WILLIAM BASINSKI JUNE 18–JULY 31, 2014 www.svilova.org 1 SVILOVA | WILLIAM BASINSKI SCALE BE THY KING: THE BLACK Mirror OF William Basinski By David Keenan 1. Scalle Bee Thie Kynge. There is a magical idea, rarely articulated, that imagination is the world-creating matrix of desire, in other words that imagination is what translates a sensation into a thought. Disintegration Loops, still the central, emblematic work of the artist and composer William Basinski, conflates the biological with the constructed, the historical with the personal, by a creative act of imagination that would attempt to mimic the function of memory via accidental processes of auto-forgetting while connecting it with historical trauma –the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers as a head wound – and romantic portraiture, through the back cover recreation of Henry Wallis’s 1856 painting, The Death Of Chatterton, with Basinski posed as the dead 18th Century English poet, who poisoned himself in 1770, aged 17. Thomas Chatterton’s reputation as a forger of mystical poetry is of note here. From the age of 12 onwards he produced a run of strange, visionary verse that he claimed was the work of a 15th century monk of his own invention, Thomas Rowley. Indeed, a particular adjective, “Rowliean”, has been coined to describe the works of this historical figment, this shade birthed of an intoxicated imagination. Rowley’s verse is difficult, its language being largely derived from Chatterton’s study of the English philologist John Kersey’s Dictionarium Anglo-Britannicum, “comprehending a brief explication of all sorts of difficult words”.

NEIGHBORS, PARTNERS, ENEMIES: JEWS AND THE MONASTERIES OF GERMANY IN THE HIGH MIDDLE AGES A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Notre Dame in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by John D. Young __________________________________ John Van Engen, Director Graduate Program in Medieval Studies Notre Dame, Indiana September 2011 © Copyright by John D. Young 2011 All rights reserved NEIGHBORS, PARTNERS, ENEMIES: JEWS AND THE MONASTERIES OF GERMANY IN THE HIGH MIDDLE AGES Abstract by John D. Young German-speaking lands in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries were home to the largest Jewish communities north of the Alps and Pyrenees and thus constituted key locations for Christian-Jewish interaction. This dissertation examines the monasteries of Germany—the primary centers of intellectual and cultural production in the high medieval Empire—as loci for that interaction. It explores both the social/economic and the cultural aspect of contact between monks and Jews. In the process, it challenges traditional interpretations of Christian-Jewish relations and helps to fill in the picture of the lives and activities of monks in this period. The study proceeds in three parts. Part one, comprising the first three chapters, examines the political context wherein Jews and monks interacted before investigating evidence of contact between Jews and monks in the social and economic spheres. This evidence demonstrates that Jewish communities and monasteries occupied similar John D. Young political positions in this society—due to their mutual reliance on the institution of privilege—and that they engaged frequently in business dealings with each other.

CROSS OF LIGHT TEMPLE 2003 – 2017 τί γὰρ ὠφελήσει ἄνθρωπον ἐὰν κερδήσῃ τὸν κόσμον ὅλον καὶ ζημιωθῃ τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ CROSS OF LIGHT TEMPLE [email protected] CROSS OF LIGHT TEMPLE POSITION STATEMENT 1. Everything is grounded in the immediate experience of now. We are here and not elsewhere, and we act from where we are. The immediate experience of now reasserts itself as reality no matter how often it is denied. 2. There is no secret wisdom. Everything is provisional. Nothing is certain. There are no reliable authorities. All systems are arbitrary and only acquire meaning if their constituent elements are accepted as if they were true. All supposedly valid systems can be invalidated by the simple expedient of refusing their premises. 3. What people tell me I am is a fiction. I am beyond any definition given by the other. I am beyond any definition given by myself. I am beyond what I'm told I am. I begin nowhere. I end nowhere. I occupy a space between beginning and end, which is constant but seems to change. The mortal and corruptible body is absolutely linked to any notion of super sensible being with which it is associated. We have the necessary resources within us and we do not need instruction from elsewhere. 4. Form is a treatment of unfettered imagination. The limited is a manifestation of the limitless. Limitless being exists in the context of finite being; the endless is known by that which knows a beginning and end. The end is in the beginning and the beginning is in the end.
