Deeply affected is fourteen- year-old Charity Pittman, daughter of a local preacher. Reverend Pittman thinks Adrienne is the devil incarnate while Charity thinks she's wonderful. E-mail: [email protected] Received: December 23, 2017 Accepted: January 13, 2018 Online Published: February 3, 2018 doi:10.5539/ells.v8n1p20 URL: https://doi.org/10.5539/ells.v8n1p20 Abstract This article aims to explore the centrally essential notion of homeplace as a site of resistance presented in Fannie Flagg’s Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe (1987). Close reading of the novel advances the argument that both the symbolic Whistle Stop and the cafe represent the counteractive force against sexist, classist and racist ideologies that basically undermine self-esteem and empowerment of literary characters in the text. Despite gender, class and race, the discussed characters, however they are marginalized, can safely take refuge, heal and recover themselves in the guarded icons connoting deep meanings. By directing a critical gaze at rootedness, the discussion is grounded in Black feminist criticism that, while largely exclusive to the experiences of women of color, values the significant role of homeplace and informs how the novel responds to this feminist perspective. In the collective effort to offset discrimination, it is stressed that one is to regain a sense of self in the marginal space by embracing Black feminism.

Abstract Established in 2008 with the release of Iron Man, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has become a ubiquitous transmedia sensation. Its uniquely interwoven narrative provides auspicious grounds for scholarly consideration. The franchise conscientiously presents larger-than-life superheroes as complex and incredibly emotional individuals who form profound interpersonal relationships with one another. This thesis explores Sarah Hagelin’s concept of resistant vulnerability, which she defines as a “shared human experience,” as it manifests in the substantial relationships that Steve Rogers (Captain America) cultivates throughout the Captain America narrative (11). This project focuses on Steve’s relationships with the following characters: Agent Peggy Carter, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), and Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier).

  • Trends in Gender Portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Avengers Series: a Conventional Content Analysis
Volume 10 Issue 1 (2021) Trends in Gender Portrayal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe Avengers Series: A Conventional Content Analysis Haley Morales1 and Daniel Olivo1 1Bergen County Technical High School, Teterboro, NJ, USA ABSTRACT The Bechdel test, used to examine the frequency and portrayal of women in film, consists of three criteria – (1) a movie must represent two or more women, (2) who have names and speak to each other, (3) about anything other than a man. In order to answer the research question “Based on the Bechdel test, how does the Avengers series portray their female characters compared to their male characters?”, this paper utilizes and extends beyond the Bechdel test by performing a conventional content analysis of same-gender conversations in four top-grossing superhero films – Mar- vel’s The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019). By combining the simplicity of the Bechdel test with a qualitative approach to code dialogue, this paper illus- trates the underrepresentation of female characters and specific differences between the portrayal of men and women in modern Marvel films. While the films improved in the number of female characters and female-to-female conver- sations over time, there is still a small number of female-to-female conversations in these films compared to male-to- male conversations. Furthermore, while male characters rarely spoke to each other about women, female characters spoke to each other about men very often. Some common elements of dialogue for both male and female characters were worries about danger, discussions of violence, and insulting others.

Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) 87 liked it Average Rating: 3.7/5 User Ratings: 133,466 Movie Info A woman learns the value of friendship as she hears the story of two women and how their friendship shaped their lives in this warm comedy-drama. Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) is an emotionally repressed housewife with a habit of drowning her sorrows in candy bars. Her husband Ed (Gailard Sartain) barely acknowledges her existence, and while he visits his aunt at a nursing home every week, Evelyn is not permitted to come into the room because the old women doesn't like her. One week, while waiting out Ed's visit, Evelyn meets Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy), a frail but feisty old woman who lives at the same nursing home and loves to tell stories. Over the span of several weeks, she spins a whopper about one of her relatives, Idgie (Mary Stuart Masterson). Back in the 1920s, Idgie was a sweet but fiercely independent woman with her own way of doing things who ran the town diner in Whistle Stop, Alabama. Idgie was very close to her brother Buddy (Chris O'Donnell), and when he died, she wouldn't talk to anyone except Buddy's girl, Ruth Jamison (Mary-Louise Parker). Idgie gave Ruth a job at the cafe after she left her abusive husband, Frank Theatrical release poster (Wikipedia) Bennett (Nick Searcy). Between her habit of standing up for herself, standing up to Frank, and serving food TOMATOMETER to Black people out the back of the diner, Idgie raised the ire of the less tolerant citizens of Whistle Stop, and when Frank mysteriously disappeared, many All Critics locals suspected that Idgie, Ruth, and their friends may have been responsible.

Norman fear's 1hir0 sermon 2543 14 Mar 92 ELLIOTT THINKSHEETS "FRIED GREEN TOMATOES": FRIENDSHIP AS GOD 309 L.Eliz.Dr., Craigville, MA 02636 Phone 508.775.8008 His first sermon was on tolerance. "All in the Family"'s Noncommercial reproduction permitted Archie Bunker was a paragon of the opposing vice. He was the virtue's antihero in this sermon-story on what not to be & do. The value-field was social, the goal being a more amicable, multicultural common life. The downside of the sermon was its downputting of (1) the family & (2) fathers. Social philosophers continue to debate which it did more of, good or harm. It certainly pandered to the anti-institutional mood of the rising generation. ....Lear's second sermon was on freedom, its value-field political. It was his creation for People of the American Way, his version of "the American way" being radical secular humanism....His third sermon is on friendship, its value-field per- sonal. Based on Fannie Flagg's feminist novel, "Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe." Lear's current film completes the sermon trilogy & rounds out his theology, such as it is. My review of it is unpolluted by other reviews: I haven't read or heard any yet....Why bother? Because Lear is the most powerful living individual shaper of American life. 1 Theotropism, turning to God, is Lear's central anti-value. Tolerance, freedom, friendship are alternative tropisms. What his next will be is anybody's guess. But this seems certain, barring a radical religious conversion: his virtues-list will always be secular; God in any traditional piety will not make it.
