Travel 30 miles southwest of Baku along the Caspian shore to the volcanic desert where rocks are covered with carvings, standing amidst the scattered stones and mountains. There are more than 6,000 rock carvings left by the artists of the Paleolithic period. They depicted customs of ancient tribes, hunting scenes and dances and their everyday life. The range of themes is wide and the vividness with which they were executed can evoke envy in modern artists. The oldest petroglyphs date to the XVIIIth century B.C. Long after you have left Gobustan you will remember the drawings that came down to us from the remote past. Return to Baku city and on the way to Baku visit to “Bibi-Heybat” mosque (XII c.) and survey panorama offshore oil port and offshore oil platforms. Baku Charity Triathlon The 9th annual Baku Charity Triathlon will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2013. The race is a sprint-distance triathlon: 500m swim, 20km bike, 5 km run. The swim will take place at the Hyatt Oasis Club indoor pool during the morning, while the afternoon bike and run will take place at Stonepay Royal Park. The categories are an Open Race (men and women), an over 40’s race (men and women), an over 50s race (men and women) and two team races – teams of two or teams of three (no gender difference here).

In 1863 the professor-chemist Mendeleev recommended building an oil pipeline during his visit to Baku, but the volume of production was not big then and that’s why the proposal was never realized.

    £AZERBAIJAN @Hostages in the context of the Karabakh conflict - an update Introduction Hostage-taking has been an intractable problem since the beginning of the conflict over Karabakh - an area of Azerbaijan populated mainly by ethnic Armenians. Over 20,000 people are estimated to have died in this conflict which has spread beyond Karabakh, now under the overall control of ethnic Armenian forces, to other areas of Azerbaijan which they have occupied. Hundreds of people, many unarmed civilians, have been held as hostages by all sides to the conflict. These hostages have been held by private individuals, with the knowledge and/or complicity of the authorities. They have also been held by the authorities themselves, who in some cases are reported to have detained people and then distributed them as hostages to private families who have members held as hostages by the other side. There have been many reports of torture and ill-treatment in detention. The self-perpetuating cycle of taking hostages to exchange for those held by the other side has been exacerbated by the activity of intermediaries, who have brokered hostage distribution to families, or their exchange, for money. Even corpses are traded. Humanitarian law forbids hostage-taking under any circumstances. Amnesty International has persistently appealed to all parties to the conflict to ensure that no one is detained as a hostage, or otherwise held solely on the grounds of their ethnic origin. The organization strongly believes that all human rights violations are to be deplored and that in no circumstances can abuses perpetrated by one party be used as justification for abuses carried out by another.

The MSA’s web page is at http://www.mugham.net. Azerbaijan in the World: How did it happen that you began performing mugham? Was this a rational choice or rather something more contingent? Jeffrey Werbock: This question touches on why I play mugham. One can love a certain kind of music and just listen to it; one doesn’t have to learn to play it in order to enjoy it. But for me there was never any question, I had to apply myself to 1 learning to play mugham and I never asked myself why. From the first moment of hearing it played live, right in front of me; I was already thinking how to ask for lessons so I could learn to play it too. And at first I was only concerned about learning how to play mugham. However, thanks to the curiosity of a few friends, I had cause to play this music for others even though I was just beginning my studies.
