CARE FROM PERIPHERY TO CENTRE Elena Cologni in collaboration with Homerton College, University of Cambridge 3 Page 3 Page CARE: FROM PERIPHERY TO CENTRE Elena Cologni’s artistic research looks at undervalued practices of care in society through people’s experiences of place. For this project, she collaborated with the 250 Archive Working Group in 2018 to respond to domestic, social and political dimensions of care in the work of Maud Cloudesley Brereton and Leah Manning, while researching the College’s archive and its architecture. The research was underpinned care ethics principles and a conversation with renowned care ethicist Virginia Held. A more intimate dimension is revealed through the selection of students’ items, as a snapshot of everyday life in an early 20th-century women’s College. This research unearths the College’s historic concern with, and contribution to, health, well-being and education. ELENA COLOGNI The exhibits resonate with Cologni’s aesthetic sensibility for their tactile and visual qualities, and underpin the artist’s sculptural installation designed in response to the 1914 Ibberson Gymnasium, and echoed in the Queen’s Wing veranda and lawn. The newly rehoused archive, and installation art as a medium for conveying its contents, are key developments in the College’s anniversary year. Responding to Homerton 250 themes of free-thinking and change, the installation shows how archives embody the past, but by critically informing the present can help shape the future, too. Elena Cologni has a PhD in Fine Art from the University of the Arts, Central Saint Martin’s College, London. She has an in(ter)disciplinary research approach and collaborates with academics from fields including psychology, philosophy, and cognitive science. Her work has previously been exhibited elsewhere across University of Cambridge departments and Colleges, as well as at prestigious national and international venues such as Tate Modern, Whitechapel Gallery, Museo d’Arte Moderna, Bologna, Karsi Sanat, Istanbul, and Oslo Kunstforening. She is currently a recipient of the Artist International Development Fund (British Council/ Arts Council England, 2018-19), and the Artist-Newsletter Bursary Award (2018). Created to accommodate expanding arts curriculum, studios, theatre and gymnasium, opening on to lawns for outdoor sport and dance. The arrangement of the display was inspired by archival photographs of the room, whose architectural design was punctuated by wooden panels corresponding to the areas in between the curved windows. On view are reproductions of the original items kept in the College Archive, as well as selected sport equipment, and a documentary footage of the research material from the College Archive. Built as student residence, refurbished 2017 by Martindales to include gym and dance studio, offices and college archive. Wall displays record two eminent Homertonians and their national contributions to health and care. The display includes documents from the archive recording aspects of care, health and wellbeing in student life, and Cologni’s artistic response CARE IS RELATIONAL, AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS, ELENA COLOGNI (2018), 2 FROM SERIES OF WOVEN LABELS. (the first of which is inspired by Virginia Held’s writings, and the latter by Maud Brereton’s revolutionary position at the beginning of the 20th century, when she sustained that domestic labour should be paid) INDOOR GYMNASTICS (1944/5). Three photographs of scenes from Homerton’s past, showing students participating in gymnastics classes. Learning about health and moving the body was an important part of historical curricula. Visit the Ibberson building for a further display of pictures and objects related to the former gymnasium (now Combination Room). TRAFFORD SOAP BAR (1930S/40S). Used for washing clothes and scrubbing floors, the aroma of Trafford soap pervaded the College. Students were trained in basic hygiene to apply when teaching in schools. This care extended to social work, volunteering in vacations at settlements for poor children. SOUVENIR OR MEMOIR ALBUM (1880). Many of these student albums of memories and tokens survive, and several are gathered in this exhibition. Students handed their often very elaborate albums round amongst their friends, each inscribing a page to celebrate friendships, an insight into the close-knit life of the College. SEALED SECRET (C. 1860). An embossed envelope, sealed with the message: “Yes, but ask True Love”. Includes a coloured floral design on the reverse. SOUVENIR OR MEMOIR ALBUM (1900). Depicts kindness in serving friends food at table and providing cocoa for them at bedtime. “Things by which I shall remember Katie”. CONTENTS OF A NEEDLEWORK BOX (1861-2). Bought for 12s 6d, this box belonged to Emma Hunter, a student at Homerton College in the early 1860s, next to EMMA HUNTER, PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT (1861-2). STUDENT HANDWORK BOOK (1917). A book in which students made patterns for dressmaking. Dressmaking was an important skill for students in their adult lives, and in preparing a younger generation of girls at school for home-making and motherhood. MOTHER’S TOOLS, ELENA COLOGNI (2018, Composition Of 4: wood, steel, custom-made fabric labels, printing tools from the artist’s mother’s embroidery kit, 20cmx20cm each, the artist’s collection). When she was 14 her parents migrated to Canada but she decided to remain in the UK with her grandparents. She attended Homerton College, Cambridge and was working as a teacher in Cambridge when she met Hugh Dalton and joined the Fabian Society and the Independent Labour Party. She campaigned for free milk for the school children to improve their health. In 1914 she married the astronomer William Henry Manning. Manning joined the 1917 club after the Russian Revolution and became a speaker at Labour events around the country. She became headmistress of an Open Air School for under- nourished children in Cambridge. In 1929 she was organising secretary of the National Union of Teachers and became President the following year. In February 1931 she was elected as MP for Islington East, only to lose her seat in the General Election when she decided not to support Ramsay Macdonald's National Government. She spent a year on the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party and stood as a candidate for Sunderland at the 1935 General Election but was unsuccessful. She also began to move away from her previous stance as a pacifist to that of actively campaigning against fascism. At the 1936 Labour party conference she argued, along with Ellen Wilkinson and Aneurin Bevan, for military assistance to be given to the Popular Front of Spain in its fight against Franco.

New organisations were created, the role of women’s sections within political parties was reassessed and a wealth of propaganda material was published at election times that specifically targeted women. While some of these efforts were avowedly aimed at mobilizing the female vote in favour of a political party or around an ideological (feminist) agenda, others were seemingly simply intended to arouse women’s interest in politics and educate them in their new citizenship.

    Intervention?: British Politics and Basque Refugee Children During the Spanish Civil War Senior Thesis Natalie Brewer May 9, 2006 On May 23 1937 at 7:30 in the morning, 4000 Basque children accompanied by señoritas, Catholic priests and auxiliaries arrived at Southampton in the United Kingdom on the SS Habana. Mattresses lined the decks though there was still insufficient room for the children to lie down and sleep comfortably. Many of them were weary, sleep deprived and sea-sick. Yet the arrival at Southampton was exciting for the children. The port had been recently decorated for the king’s coronation, and many of the children believed these extravagant decorations to be in their honor, adding to the excitement of their arrival and forging distinct memories. The children were greeted by doctors who gave them food in hopes of relieving their sea-sickness. Although the voyage was difficult, the unpleasantness was minimal compared to the experiences the children had had in war ravaged Spain. These children were being evacuated from the destructive bombs, extreme hunger and death wrought on the Republican Basque Country by the Nationalist Army during the Spanish Civil War. This evacuation was part of a larger humanitarian aid movement, and thousands of other Basque Children were evacuated primarily to France, the Soviet Union, and Belgium and in lesser numbers to Mexico, the United States, Switzerland and Denmark. This story of the Basque refugee children takes place in the context of international political turmoil and many have commented that it was the precedent to World War II, a battle in which democracy fought fascism.

    (1) 'Who is anti-American ?': The British Left and the United States, 1945-1956 by Giora Goodman University College London A dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) © 1996 U (2) Abstract The subject of this research is British 'anti-Americanism' in the decade after 1945: a complex phenomenon with often contradictory political and cultural manifestations. This study focuses primarily on the attitudes towards the United States of the organized political Left, because the Left came to be regarded in this period as the most 'anti-American' element in British political life. Examining that charge, this study follows the development of attitudes towards the United States in British political life, particularly within the Labour Party, long- established as the most serious organized force on the Left, and the governing Party from 1945 to 195 1. The study aims to show that hostile responses towards the United States on the British Left imbibed the same national resentments which could be found in other quarters of British political life. The British Left had its own set of ideological and emotional prejudices which gave a distinct colour, and perhaps added impetus, to its resentments. However, underpinning all the hostile sentiments was the resentment of Britain's postwar domination and displacement by the United States, which among Conservatives was concealed only by the onset of the Cold War, until it forcefully erupted during the Suez crisis. Finally, this study delineates and examines the great concern with which 'anti- Americanism' was viewed at the time by policy-makers and politicians on both sides of the Atlantic.

The final, definitive version of this paper has been published in Journal of Contemporary History, volume 46, issue 2, April 2011 by SAGE Publications Ltd, All rights reserved. © Brett Holman] Abstract The British fear of bombing in the early 20th century has aptly been termed 'the shadow of the bomber'. But the processes by which the public learned about the danger of bombing are poorly understood. This paper proposes that the press was the primary source of information about the threat, and examines a formative period in the evolution of public concern about airpower, the so-called air panic of 1935, during which German rearmament was revealed and large-scale RAF expansion undertaken in response. A proposed air pact between the Locarno powers enabled a shift from support of disarmament to rearmament by newspapers on the right, while simultaneously supporting collective security. Paradoxically, after initially supporting the air pact, the left-wing press and its readers began to have doubts, for the same reason: the need to support collective security. This episode sheds new light on early rearmament, and how the government was able to undertake it, despite the widespread feelings in the electorate in favour of disarmament. Britain’s fear of the bomber in the 1930s is well known, but surprisingly little studied. Most historians have concentrated on the view from above, exploring how (or indeed, whether) the Royal Air Force (RAF) became wedded to an offensive doctrine based on strategic bombing.

It seeks to establish the significance of her transnational orientation and how this can allow us to complement and deepen existing understandings of her. Drawing on the literature on transnational activist networks, it outlines the complexity of transnational networks and her repertoire of transnational political practice. Without serious attention to this global dimension of her politics, our understanding of Wilkinson is attenuated and distorted. Crucially, the heroic construction of ‘‘Red Ellen’’ in both labourist and socialist- feminist narratives has obscured her second radicalization (1932–1936) and the sharpness of her metamorphosis into a mainstream Labour Party figure in 1939–1940. Ellen Wilkinson has been described as ‘‘arguably Britain’s most important woman politician’’. Due to her reputation for fiery radicalism, ‘‘Red Ellen’’ has persisted in the collective memory of Britain’s 1930s.1 This article will explore her internationalism and the transnational aspect of her politics in order to reconsider her political trajectory, and to provide a detailed case study of transnational practice in the era of the two world wars.
