VALUES Respect Inclusion Creativity Teamwork Resilience Acknowledgement of Territory Bow Valley College is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis” which we now call the City of Calgary. The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3. Annual Report 2018 – 2019 | 1 STUDENT FOCUS Since 1965, Bow Valley College prides itself on being a student-focused community college. Our new strategic direction — Open Doors-Open Minds — ensures that students remain at the centre of what we do. We see each individual student and build in resources around them to support their persistence and achievement. We are an institution that believes in them and opens our doors to them, regardless of where they are beginning. We help our students achieve their goals and obtain the jobs they aim for. Employers see us as the go- to resource for their labour force needs. We actively partner with Indigenous communities and engage an immensely diverse learning community across the breadth and depth of our programming scope. We are expanding our access agenda to Albertans who want to pivot in their careers.     Media Release For Immediate Release Enrolment positive at Alberta’s 11 Colleges Slave Lake, AB - September 22, 2016 – With the 2016-17 academic year now underway, the 11 Colleges across the province are reporting increased enrolments in academic programming. “The enrolment numbers are looking bright for Colleges in our province,” says Joel Ward, Red Deer College President & CEO. “When we look at the numbers collectively, comparing this year’s enrolment numbers with those from the 2015-16 year, the 11 institutions are showing exceptional enrolment growth in academic programming, with an increase of over 9%.” Ward attributes the strong growth in part to the number of Albertans who lost their jobs and are reentering post-secondary to reskill and retrain in preparation for when the economy rebounds. “Government funding has increased over the past two years and this has also enabled Colleges to offer new programs, which contributes to the strong growth in enrolment,” he says. Some general trends can be found when comparing enrolment numbers, as six institutions reported increases in business and business administration programs. Other areas of growth included health and human service programs, university transfer programs and upgrading. “Northern Lakes College continues to experience enrollment growth. Our health programs - the EMT-Paramedic and Practical Nurse program are oversubscribed – all seats are full and we have a waitlist” says Ann Everatt, President & CEO. “Academic Upgrading and University Studies enrollment continue to climb over last year. Concerned with looming education cuts proposed by Jim Prentice’s PC government, Calgary parents organized to push back against oversized classrooms, shrinking budgets, over reliance on fundraising, long bus rides and lotteries for school access. The group has evolved over the years, and through our advocacy we have learned the chronic underfunding of public education is not a local, or provincial phenomenon, but rather part of a larger strategy to privatize public education. We believe public education belongs to Albertans. Our vision is of an equitable accessible and universal public education that meets the needs of all students. Support Our students is 100% volunteer run. Our work involves communicating with advocates across Alberta and internationally. We produce all kinds of content, from reports, to video, podcasts and public comment. We have hosted several screenings of the enlightening documentary Backpack Full of Cash, and speak across the province about the need to protect and reclaim public education.
