Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers. Currently 857 vertebrate and 1,100 invertebrate taxa are included. Conservation status, in the form of range-wide, national and state ranks are assigned to each taxon. Information on species range and distribution, number of individuals, population trends and threats is collected into a ranking form, analyzed, and used to assign ranks. Ranks are updated periodically, as new information is collected. We welcome new information for any species on our list. Fishery-at-a-Glance Night Smelt Scientific Name: Spirinchus starksi Range: Night Smelt are distributed coast-wide from southeast Alaska to Point Arguello, Santa Barbara County. Habitat: Night Smelt occur in the surf and in depths from the surface to approximately 400 feet (122 meters). Size (length and weight): Night Smelt measure less than 6 inches total length (140 millimeters) weighing to 11 grams. Males are slightly longer and heavier than females. Life span: Night Smelt are short lived and believed to reach a maximum of 2 to 3 years. Reproduction: Spawning occurs in the surf along open coast coarse sand beaches from January to September. Eggs are fertilized in the wash of the surf, adhere to sand grains, and sink. Hatching occurs in approximately 2 weeks. Prey: Night Smelt feed on small crustaceans—primarily gammarid amphipods and mysid shrimp. Predators: Night Smelt provide forage for a wide range of predators, including Striped Bass, Redtail Surfperch, salmon, Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, terns, gulls, and cormorants. Fishery: Commercial and recreational fisheries are shore-based. Area fished: Historically, fishing occurred from Moss Landing, Monterey County to the Oregon border. Currently, fishing occurs from San Mateo County to Del Norte County. Fishing season: Fishing occurs during the spawning season—January to September. Fishing gear: Fishermen fish from shore using A-frame dip nets. Market(s): Landed fish are sold for human consumption and aquarium food. Current stock status: No formal stock assessments exist for Night Smelt. Although catch rates have increased on average since the early 2000s, it is undetermined if this increase in the index is due to increased abundance or changes in fishermen behavior. -

Whittle 1 GLOSSARY OF FISH TECHNOLOGY TERMS [Words highlighted in bold in the text of an entry refer to another entry. Words in parenthesis are alternatives.] Abnormalities Attributes of the fish that are not found in the great majority of that kind of fish. For example: atypical shapes; overall or patchy discolorations of skin or of fillet; diseased conditions; atypical odours or flavours. Generally, the term should be used for peculiarities present in the fish at the time of capture or harvesting, or developing very soon after; peculiarities arising during processing should be considered as defects. Acetic acid Formal chemical name, ethanoic acid. An organic acid of formula CH3.COOH. It is the main component, 3-6%, other than water, of vinegar. Used in fish technology in preparation of marinades. Acid curing See Marinating Actomyosin A combination of the two main proteins, actin and myosin, present in all muscle tissues. Additive A chemical added to a food to affect its properties. Timo Arula*, Heli Shpilev, Tiit Raid, Markus Vetemaa and Anu Albert Abstract Age of fsh at maturation depends on the species and environmental factors but, in general, investment in growth is prioritized until the frst sexual maturity, after which a considerable and increasing proportion of resources are used for reproduction. The present study summarizes for the frst the key elements of the maturation of European smelt (Osmerus eperlanus) young of the year (YoY) in the North-eastern Gulf of Riga (the Baltic Sea). Prior to the changes in climatic conditions and collapse of smelt fshery in the 1990s in the Gulf of Riga, smelt attained sexual maturity at the age of 3–4 years. We found a substantial share (22%) of YoY smelt with maturing gonads after the collapse of the smelt fsheries. Maturing individuals had a signifcantly higher weight, length and condition factor than immature YOY, indicating the importance of individual growth rates in the maturation process. The proportion of maturing YoY individuals increased with fsh size. We discuss the factors behind prioritizing reproduction overgrowth in early life and its implications for the smelt population dynamics. The aim of the study was to compare the selenium content in the European smelt from the Bay of Pomerania, Gdansk, and the Curonian Lagoon. The experimen- tal material consisted of smelt samples (muscle) caught in the bays of Gdansk and Pomerania and the Curonian Lagoon (estuaries of the three largest rivers in the Baltic Sea basin: the Oder, the Vistula and the Neman). A total of 133 smelt were examined (Pomerania Bay n = 67; Gdansk Bay n = 35; Curonian Lagoon n = 31). Selenium concentrations were determined spec- trofluorometrically. The data were analyzed statistically using one-way analysis of variance, calculated in Statistica PL software. The region of fish collection significantly affected the content of selenium in the examined smelts. -

Many fish species served as food or animal fodder, or were used to make glue and other useful products. But the receding of lakes in the nineteenth century, and the expansion of hydropower and worsening of water pollution in the twentieth, contributed to the decline of inland fisheries. At the same time, marine fish became more competitive on the Swedish food market. In some regions, however, certain freshwater species continued to be caught for household consumption well into the twentieth century. -
Surf Smelt Fact Sheet
WASHINGTON STATE SURF SMELT FACT SHEET NAME: Surf smelt, Hypomesus pretiosus (Girard 1855). GEOGRAPHIC RANGE: Long Beach, California to Chignik Lagoon, Alaska. The Asian subspecies, Hypomesus pretiosus japonicas, occurs in the northwest Pacific Ocean. RELATED SPECIES: Several members of the smelt family, Osmeridae, occur in Washington waters, including eulachon (Columbia River smelt, hooligan) Thaleichthys pacificus, longfin smelt Spirinchus thaleichthys, whitebait smelt Allosmerus elongatus, and night smelt Spirinchus starksi. Unlike the other species, both eulachon and longfin smelt are anadromous, migrating into streams in the winter to spawn. Note: Columbia River smelt (eulachon) are listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and recreational fishing for this species in Washington waters is limited to years in which the run size is exceptionally large. Be sure to check the recreational fishing regulations (http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/) before attempting to fish for any smelt species. RECOGNITION: Characteristic dark stripe down the middle of the side of the body. Also notable for small mouth with maxillary (upper jaw bone) that does not extend past the midpoint of the pupil of the eye; dorsal fin begins in front of the pelvic fin; pelvic fins short; and small, curved adipose fin. Length up to eight inches. LOCAL DISTRIBUTION: Surf smelt occur abundantly throughout the nearshore marine waters of Washington, from the Columbia River to the Canadian border and into southernmost Puget Sound and Hood Canal. Genetic research suggests that, despite this broad distribution, surf smelt throughout Puget Sound represent a single stock. SPAWN TIMING: Surf smelt populations can generally be divided into summer spawners and fall/winter spawners, though year- round spawning has been documented in the Whidbey Basin, Port Susan, portions of the San Juan Islands, and central Puget Sound (Eagle Harbor and Sinclair Inlet).
