We look for literary quality, for books that match the needs of the child, for books that share authentic cultural content, for books that Bookbird editors prompt emotional responses, etc. Parents seek out old favorites, teachers read aloud during story time, librarians select books to build inviting collections, and all of this is often without the input of the constituent at the core: the child. Who can say what is appropriate in a children’s book? Who controls the content? How do we decide what is good, right, or best for children? Who decides? Heard† ABSTRACT: In 1994, Congress passed legislation stating that presidents elected to office after January 1, 1997 would no longer receive lifetime Secret Service protection. Such legislation was unremarkable until the first black president—Barack Obama—was elected. From the outset of his campaign until today, and likely beyond, President Obama has received unprecedented death threats. These threats, we argue, are at least in part tied to critics‘ and commentators‘ use of figurative language and imagery that characterize Obama as a primate. As a point of departure, we refer specifically to the racist humor in Sean Delonas‘ controversial New York Post cartoon of February 2009. Chimps, Obama and Racial Stereotype We are decidedly not in a ‘post-racial’ America, whatever that may look like; indeed, many have been made more uneasy by the election of a black president and the accompanying euphoria, evoking a concomitant racial backlash in the form of allegedly satirical visual imagery. Such imagery attempts to dispel anxieties about race and ‘blackness’ by reifying the old racial stereotypes that suggest African Americans are really culturally and intellectually inferior and therefore not to be feared, that the threat of blackness can be neutralized or subverted through caricature and mockery. When the perpetrators and promulgators of such imagery are caught in the light of national media and accused of racial bias, whether blatant or implied, they always resort to the same ideological escape hatch: it was only ‘a joke’.

    Alice in Wonderland Glossary of Terms for Madge Miller’s adaptation from Lewis Carroll Lewis Carroll’s novella Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, on which Madge Miller’s play is based, begins not with Alice sitting on the grass with her sister, but with the following poem, which recalls the “golden afternoon” when Carroll first began telling the story of Alice’s adventures underground to the three Liddell sisters, Lorina (aged 13), Alice (aged 10), and Edith (aged 8). The date was Friday, July 4th, 1862. W.H. Auden once declared that July 4th, 1862 was “as memorable a day in the history of literature as it is in American history.”1 This quote and, indeed, much of the information in this glossary is culled from The Annotated Alice, a volume of Carroll’s work superbly annotated by Martin Gardner, from which I will be citing frequently. The poem which begins Alice’s Adventures reads as follows: All in the golden afternoon Full leisurely we glide; For both our oars, with little skill, By little arms are plied, While little hands make vain pretence Our wanderings to guide. Ah, cruel Three! In such an hour, Beneath such dreamy weather, To beg a tale of breath too weak To stir the tiniest feather! Yet what can one poor voice avail Against three tongues together? BLACK The legal standard for race discrimination—the intent standard—has been scrutinized and justified for decades, but that conversation has occurred almost entirely within the legal community. Relatively little effort has been made to engage the public. This Article posits that the discussion of discrimination standards must account for and include public understandings of race and discrimination because race is a socially constructed concept and discrimination is culturally contingent. Race discrimination standards based solely upon the legal community’s perceptions are susceptible to significant flaws. This Article begins the incorporation of public understandings of race and discrimination by examining the public’s reaction to a recent cartoon that, on its face, is racially neutral or ambiguous, but in light of surrounding cultural context and history is arguably racist. The cartoon generated a flurry of internet postings, reactions, and polls. This Article systematically studies those reactions and finds that the public tends to conceptualize race discrimination differently than the courts and, thus, calls into question the validity of current legal standards.
