Dear Colleagues, 12 th SWISS SUMMIT ON HEMATO–ONCOLOGY In light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s Swiss Summit on Hemato-Oncology has been rescheduled for the 25th of August. I am delighted to be able to welcome you to this long-awaited event and sincerely hope for your personal or virtual participation at the 12th SSHO 2021. I feel honored to take on the role of Main Chair and host this annual Swiss Summit at University Hospital Zurich as the Main Center. A panel of internationally renowned experts will present scientific lectures on groundbreaking clinical research and the latest advances in the fields of AML, MM, CHIP, BiTEs, and CAR T-cell therapy as well as CLL, SLL, MCL, and DLBCL. In addition, we will discuss emerging therapies in these fields among our truly multidisciplinary attendees. Similarly to last year, there will be numerous opportunities for you to interact directly with an expert panel and other participants at the Main Center – which this year is in Zurich – and 11 Satellite Centers located all over Switzerland via videoconference. This hybrid Prof. Dr Thorsten Zenz structure of the congress, combining classical and digital environments, will enable University Hospital Zurich participants and speakers to interact with each other to gain a broader understanding of the discussed topics. I look forward to seeing you at the 12th SSHO 2021 in Zurich or at one of our Satellite Centers in Baden (KSB), Basel (USB), Bellinzona (IOSI), Bern (Inselspital), Fribourg (HFR), Geneva (HUG), Genolier, Lucerne (LUKS), Neuchâtel (RHNe), St. Gallen (KSSG), or Zug (ZGKS). Neher1,2,92 ✉ Published online: 7 June 2021 Check for updates Following its emergence in late 2019, the spread of SARS-CoV-21,2 has been tracked by phylogenetic analysis of viral genome sequences in unprecedented detail3–5. Although the virus spread globally in early 2020 before borders closed, intercontinental travel has since been greatly reduced. However, travel within Europe resumed in the summer of 2020. Here we report on a SARS-CoV-2 variant, 20E (EU1), that was identifed in Spain in early summer 2020 and subsequently spread across Europe. We fnd no evidence that this variant has increased transmissibility, but instead demonstrate how rising incidence in Spain, resumption of travel, and lack of efective screening and containment may explain the variant’s success. Despite travel restrictions, we estimate that 20E (EU1) was introduced hundreds of times to European countries by summertime travellers, which is likely to have undermined local eforts to minimize infection with SARS-CoV-2. Our results illustrate how a variant can rapidly become dominant even in the absence of a substantial transmission advantage in favourable epidemiological settings.
