The present day mansion house was designed by David Hamilton and built for Kirkman Finlay, a famous East India Merchant in the 1820’s. The house was extended in the 1920’s when it was bought by Major Andrew Coates. During the 2nd World War the castle and grounds were commandeered by the Navy, serving as Naval Headquarters for the duration of the war. Although the house has been used in recent times as a residential school / activity centre it retains many original features, including ornate fireplaces, detailed plasterwork and wood panelling in public rooms and hallways.
