The objectives of the Fifth Regional EST Forum were as follows: E/CN.17/2011/18 1. To contribute towards improving understanding and strengthening regional consensus in terms of sustainable policy options, and technological and institutional measures that promote sustainable and low-carbon transport. 2. To address and identify opportunities for collaborative actions and partnerships, including international financial mechanisms, for implementing affordable, economically viable, socially acceptable and environmentally sound transport systems in developing countries. 3. To illustrate innovative initiatives, achievements, and good practices for improving the public transportation system, increasing fuel efficiency, and greening freight transport. 4. To facilitate international cooperation for capacity - building activities, including wider- scale adoption and proliferation of various EST measures at the local and national levels. -

Although there is no single, commonly held definition of Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST), the concept of EST is centred on the transportation systems and activities that meet social, economic, and environmental sustainability. EST offers an alternative to uncontrolled motorization and its related problems, comprising a complementary package of high quality public transport, non‐motorized transport (walking and cycling), transport demand management measures, clean fuels, transit oriented development, intelligent transport systems, and road safety programmes that will create a new paradigm for urban mobility and accessibility. While transportation is essential to meeting Asia's socioeconomic needs, balancing these needs with the need to protect the environment should be at the heart of the concept of EST. The Asian Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) Initiative was jointly launched by United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) and the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) in 2004 in close collaboration with national governments, international organizations, and bilateral and multilateral donor agencies. It aims to build a common understanding across Asia on the essential elements of EST and the need to adopt an integrated approach at the local and national levels to deal with multi‐sectoral environment and transport issues, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction. The twenty goals of the Bangkok 2020 Declaration (2010‐2020), agreed at the fifth Regional EST Forum in 2010, provide the basis for identifying, developing and implementing necessary policies, programmes and measures in realizing EST in Asian countries (www.uncrd.or.jp/env/5th‐ regional‐est‐forum/doc/bangkok_declaration.pdf). -

This is in line with the social goal on sustainable development, which the purpose is to attain a higher social equity. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15% of global population are disabled. During the eight-year war between Iran and Iraq, many of the victims in Iran were left disabled. The war left many people injured and this has significantly increased the impairment rate. Amongst the problems faced by people with disability in Tehran are difficulty traveling in the city, lack of public facilities and accessibility to particular facilities such as urban public spaces. This study first sought a definition of urban public spaces and Universal Design, and then finding solution for increasing interaction of people with disability in urban public spaces through Universal Design approach. This research was based on applied theory and qualitative method of field observation was engaged. One of the city district in Tehran was chosen for a case study. Based on the findings, urban design methods and solutions were suggested to increase the interaction and comfort of disabled people in urban public spaces. Vogel, Chair Urban-bias and the Roots of Political Instability: the case for the strategic importance of the rural periphery in sub-Saharan Africa seeks to unravel a conundrum in African politics. Since the 1980s, we have witnessed two contradictory trends: on the one hand, coups, which have become rare events world-wide, have continued to proliferate in the region; concurrently, several African countries – such as Ghana, Uganda, Burkina Faso and Benin – have managed to escape from seemingly insurmountable coup-traps. What explains this divergence? To address these contradictory trends, I focus initially on Ghana and Cote d‟Ivoire, neighboring states, with comparable populations, topographies, and economies that have experienced contrasting trajectories. While Ghana suffered five consecutive coups from the 1966 to 1981, Cote d‟Ivoire was an oasis of stability and prosperity. However, by the end of the 20th century, Ghana had emerged as one of the few stable two-party democracies on the continent, as Cote d‟Ivoire slid into civil war. -

Sports Washing and Politics in African Football By Carey Baraka Between 2006 and 2010, the Egyptian national men’s football team proved to be a resolute force at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), winning the continental trophy three times. Fans of this all- conquering Egyptian side remember such names as Essam El-Hadary, Hosni Abd Rabou, Mohamed Zidan, and Amr Zaki. For many, the qualities of marauding midfielder Mohamed Aboutrika, exemplified the spirit of the team. Aboutrika, also known as “El Magico”, “Amir El Qolob” (prince of hearts), or, simply, “Arab’s Zidane”, won the CAF ( Confederation of African Football) Africa Best Player of the Year a record four times and scored the sole goal in the final in AFCON 2008 as The Pharaohs edged out the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra. With his status as a legend of Egyptian football, one would have expected that at the concluded 2019 Total African Cup of Nations hosted by Egypt, Aboutrika would have been the face of the tournament, his image emblazoned across the country’s stadia. However, Aboutrika was absent from the tournament, and from the country entirely. Aboutrika has been in exile in Qatar since 2017 and on the country’s terror watch list because of his links with the Muslim Brotherhood. Aboutrika established a reputation for voicing strong political views. In 2008, in a national team game against Sudan, Aboutrika celebrated a goal by removing his jersey to reveal a T-shirt underneath with a message reading “Sympathize with Gaza”, written in both Arabic and English, in protest of Israel’s ten-day blockade of Gaza. -

“This Time for Africa”: FIFA, Politics, and South Africa’s Struggle for Human Rights Taylor Henley Duke Immerse: Freedom Struggles in the 20th Century Professors Chafe and Shapiro April 22, 2013 Henley 1 When you fall get up, oh oh If you fall get up, eh eh Tsamina mina zangalewa Cuz this is Africa Tsamina mina, eh eh Waka waka, eh eh Tsamina mina zangalewa This time for Africa In 2010, for the first time in the history of organized international soccer, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) held its quadrennial World Cup on the continent of Africa. “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the official song of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, reflects the enthusiasm of the entire continent as the world’s most anticipated sports tournament catapulted South Africa to the world soccer stage. Behind the song’s cheery façade, however, lay the implicit acknowledgement of decades of struggle for black liberation. Forty-nine years after South Africa’s first suspension from FIFA for its discriminatory practices, thirty-five years after FIFA formally expelled South Africa following the deadly Soweto uprising, eighteen years after FIFA formally readmitted South Africa, and sixteen years after South Africa’s first democratic elections, the world was finally officially recognizing South Africa—and the rest of the continent—as a major player in the politics of international soccer. The struggle for integration of South African soccer is a microcosmic representation of the overarching struggle for human rights in apartheid South Africa. The conflict between the pro-apartheid and race-segregated Football Association of Southern Africa (FASA) and the anti- apartheid and non-racial South African Soccer Federation (SASF) parallels, and in some cases Henley 2 precedes, that of the apartheid government and leading anti-apartheid political organizations.
