    Vol. 7 No. 1 (2020): 17-30 Received: 2020-02-21 Accepted: 2019-03-10 Published: 2020-04-30 Original Article Islamic Educational Tradition: Rebuilding Sufi Traditions in Nahdlatul Wathan Madrasas Prosmala Hadisaputraa*, Ahmad Bin Yussufa & Tengku Sarina Aini Binti Tengku Kasima a Islamic Education Program, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur * Prosmala Hadisaputra, email; [email protected] ABSTRACT This article discusses Sufi tradition as an Islamic educational tradition in the Nahdlatul Wathan (NW) madrassas. The article was examined through a literature review supported by interviews and analyzed through a sociological approach. We put the document as primary data, while the results of the interview as secondary data. These documents are works of Shaykh Zainuddin, founder of the NW organization, which houses around 1600 madrassas throughout Indonesia. In addition, we also used documents written by his students. As for the interviews, we carried out with three key informants. We concluded that Sufi rituals as the educational traditions in the NW madrassas are the original traditions of the Sufis which were rebuilt and modified both in terms of practice and material. The emergence of these traditions in two ways. Some of it arises through the bottom, which was traditions that occurred spontaneously, and partly arise through the above, namely a tradition that occurs utilizing being planned, promoted, and emphasized. The process of changing the old Sufi tradition into the NW version is in line with the formulation of the sociologist, Piotr Sztompka. He argues that changing tradition is a necessity, and human psychology always wants to realize its ideas.

The Sufi As The Axis Of The orld:W Representations Of Religious Authority In The Works Of Ismail Hakki Bursevi (1653-1725) Abstract The present study examines the ways in which Ismail Hakki Bursevi (1653-1725) d(re)defines and deploys Islamic discursive practices and institutions to assert his religious authority as the most influential Sufi master in the Celveti order after its founder. Through a literary analysis of Bursevi’s autobiographical notes and dedicatory treatises (tuhfe) to Ottoman officials, I examine how he uses the institutions of the Sufi master (shaykh), order (tarīqa), and the Celestial Axis (quṭb) to argue for his superior status vis-�-vis other members of the Ottoman religious and learned elite. I speculate argue that the particulars of Hakki’s self-representation can be viewed as early indications of institutional anxiety and contested leadership within the Celveti Sufi order, which split into subbranches in the latter part of the eighteenth century.

    Islamic Mystical Poetry 7: session 1 Introduction Welcome to the seventh course of Islamic Mystical Poetry: in this course we shall be looking at poets from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, three from the Ottoman Turkish tradition, one from the Ottoman Arab tradition, and two from the Indian sub-continent. As you may be aware, this is the final short course devoted to Islamic Mystical Poetry, and we hope that this and previous courses will give you a deeper appreciation of the extraordinary cultural flowering which these poets give voice to, a heritage which must rank, alongside sacred buildings, as one of the greatest gifts of Islam to humanity. On the last course we ended with one of the rare examples of female poets, A’ishah Ba’uniyyah, whose life more or less coincided with the end of the Mamluk era, the time when a Turkic slave dynasty in Egypt came to rule vast swathes of the Arab world, from Cairo to Damascus, forming a bulwark against the predations of Mongol invaders. Now we are moving into a time when the Ottomans came to dominate the whole of the Middle East, when the Ottoman sultans conquered Syria, Egypt and the Hijaz (including Mecca and Medina) and proclaimed themselves as khalīfa, the representative of God on earth. In English this period, which follows the conquest of Constantinople in 1453, is usually referred to as the Ottoman Empire, but in the Muslim consciousness it was an empire authorized by the divine and with all the trappings of religious (Sunni) orthodoxy, a caliphate.
