Some areas with low or no transmission may only be accessible by transiting areas where chemoprophylaxis is recommended. Location-specific recommendations: Chemoprophylaxis is recommended for all travelers: elevations below 2,500 m (8,200 ft), including all coastal resorts and safari itineraries; all cities and towns within these areas (including Nairobi). No preventive measures are necessary (no evidence of transmission exists): elevations above 2,500 m. Preventive measures: Travelers should observe insect precautions from dusk to dawn in areas with any level of transmission. As Africa seeks to take its place in the global economy, it is increasingly looking to aviation as the primary means of connecting its people and goods with the world. It has been suggested that Africa as a continent needs to move toward a system of hubs to optimize its scarce resources. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, is one of the airports in the eastern region of Africa that is seeking to fill this role. This paper discusses the prospects for success and the challenges that it will need to overcome, including projections through 2020 for the growth in passenger and cargo traffic. _____________________________________________________________________________ Evaristus M. Irandu received his Ph.D. in Transport Geography from the University of Nairobi. He is a Senior Lecturer and formerly, the Chairman of the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies in the University of Nairobi.     Disaster relief emergency fund (DREF) Kenya: Polio Outbreak DREF operation n° MDRKE019 GLIDE n° EP-2011-000174-KEN 23 November 2011 The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross and Red Crescent emergency response. The DREF is a vital part of the International Federation’s disaster response system and increases the ability of National Societies to respond to disasters. CHF 314, 019 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Kenya Red Cross Society in conducting polio campaigns in 58 targeted districts to reach 2,122,964 children aged under five years as a contribution to the eradication of Polio in Kenya, following an outbreak in Nyanza Province. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged. Summary: Following confirmation of 2 Polio cases in Rongo District, Nyanza Province in September 2011, the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation (MoPHS) with support of partners announced a 4 phase polio mop up campaign. The first and the second phases of the campaign were conducted from 24 to 28 September and 22 to 26 October respectively, targeting 32 districts in Nyanza A child being vaccinated by a health care worker during Province. A total of 1,185,038 children under the Round 1 and 2 vaccination. Photo: KRCS age of five were vaccinated, corresponding to 129% of the MoH target. However, the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation indicates that 5,131,161 children aged under five years are at risk of Polio in six provinces based on past epidemiologic trends and patterns.

WFP through UNHAS provides this support as regular passenger services, air-drops of bulk cargo, delivery by air of specialised cargo and chartering aircraft for fly into, out from and within southern Sudan. 1.2 WFP has developed substantial air transport capacity to move passengers and cargo, perform air-drops and air-lifts of relief/humanitarian items as well as airstrip maintenance (special operations), agency personnel movement control and air operations related support services. WFP has expressed interest to support other implementing Agencies in transporting passengers, relief items and equipment by air and providing cargo handling, booking and scheduling services. 1.3 The purpose of this document is to outline and define the policy and conditions upon which WFP will provide air transport and related support to the Agency. These include provision of passenger transport with accompanied and unaccompanied baggage, aircraft cargo space, handling and preparation of cargo, arrangements cost recovery, rates and terms of payment, ground support services, handling of prepayments, booking, scheduling, routing and consolidation of passenger movements and chartered flights.
