  • Identification Key to the Subfamilies of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera)
Identification key to the subfamilies of Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) Gavin Broad Dept. of Entomology, The Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD, UK Notes on the key, February 2011 This key to ichneumonid subfamilies should be regarded as a test version and feedback will be much appreciated (emails to [email protected]). Many of the illustrations are provisional and more characters need to be illustrated, which is a work in progress. Many of the scanning electron micrographs were taken by Sondra Ward for Ian Gauld’s series of volumes on the Ichneumonidae of Costa Rica. Many of the line drawings are by Mike Fitton. I am grateful to Pelle Magnusson for the photographs of Brachycyrtus ornatus and for his suggestion as to where to include this subfamily in the key. Other illustrations are my own work. Morphological terminology mostly follows Fitton et al. (1988). A comprehensively illustrated list of morphological terms employed here is in development. In lateral views, the anterior (head) end of the wasp is to the left and in dorsal or ventral images, the anterior (head) end is uppermost. There are a few exceptions (indicated in figure legends) and these will rectified soon. Identifying ichneumonids Identifying ichneumonids can be a daunting process, with about 2,400 species in Britain and Ireland. These are currently classified into 32 subfamilies (there are a few more extralimitally). Rather few of these subfamilies are reconisable on the basis of simple morphological character states, rather, they tend to be reconisable on combinations of characters that occur convergently and in different permutations across various groups of ichneumonids.

During macrozoobenthos sampling in the rivers of Serbia in 2003 parasitoid, and during the period 2011−2012, pupae of Silo pallipes Fabricius, 1781 Serbia, were recorded which were parasitized by an ichneumonid wasp Agrioty- distribution, pus armatus Curtis, 1832, this being the first record of it for the Balkan ecological Peninsula. A total of 217 A. armatus specimens were collected at 29 local- parameters ities situated along 16 watercourses of Serbia. All four parasitoid stages (egg, larva, pupa and resting adult) were recorded. The identity of the par- asitoid was confirmed using standard molecular methods. This study also focuses on the ecology of the parasitoid and its host. The widespread dis- tribution of A. armatus in Europe suggests the presence of this species in other Balkan countries, but this has not yet been confirmed due to a lack of surveys and/or the constantly increasing pollution of freshwaters. Instead, we assert that another order of insects, the Hymenoptera, are more 16 speciose, due in large part to the massively diverse but relatively poorly known parasitoid wasps. 17 The idea that the beetles have more species than other orders is primarily based on their 18 respective collection histories and the relative availability of taxonomic resources, which both 19 disfavor parasitoid wasps. Since it is unreasonable to directly compare numbers of described 20 species in each order, we present a simple logical model that shows how the specialization of 21 many parasitic wasps on their hosts suggests few scenarios in which there would be more beetle 22 species than parasitic wasp species.

  • Aggregation by Foraging Insect Parasitoids in Response to Local Variations in Host Density: Determining the Dimensions of a Host Patch
Journal of Animal Ecology (1989), 58, 101-117 AGGREGATION BY FORAGING INSECT PARASITOIDS IN RESPONSE TO LOCAL VARIATIONS IN HOST DENSITY: DETERMINING THE DIMENSIONS OF A HOST PATCH BY JAY A. ROSENHEIM*, THOMAS MEADEt, IRENE G. POWCH AND STEVE E. SCHOENIGt Department of Entomological Sciences, University of California, Berkeley, CA 94720, U.S.A. SUMMARY (1) We examined techniques for analysing the spatial scale at which parasitoids aggregate in response to host patchiness. (2) We attempted to demonstrate with simulations that current analyses based upon B, the slope of the linear regression of percentage parasitism on host density, are flawed. B is inappropriate due to its dependence upon the variance of host density measurements, and, therefore, upon the nature of the underlying host distribution. (3) An alternative analysis is proposed, based upon the correlation coefficient of the same linear regression, calculated over a series of increasing quadrat sizes. (4) The proposed analysis was applied to field data of the foraging behaviour of Argochrysis armilla (Hymenoptera: Chrysididae), a parasitoid of the solitary, ground- nesting wasp, Ammophila dysmica (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae). A. armilla aggregated in areas of high host nest density both during and after nest excavation. Parasitoids responded maximally to host patchiness over areas of 3-50 m2. (5) Attempts to analyse parasitoid foraging behaviour indirectly through the resultant patterns of parasitism are criticized, due to (i) the tendency of such indirect analyses to ignore temporal variation in host distribution, (ii) the tenuous link between patterns of foraging and patterns of parasitism, and (iii) the inability of studies of parasitism to distinguish active, behaviourally mediated aggregation from passive, demographically mediated aggregation.

The period 1929–2006 is covered. Our main aim has been to offer a convenient reference work to the large body of information now available. Remarkably, but understandably, the titles are widely regarded as the domain of specialists; probably few are consulted by administrators or general naturalists.

The article provides an annotated list of 147 ichneumonid species from 20 subfamilies resulted from the faunistic studies in the North of the European part of Russia, mainly on the territories of the Republic of Karelia and the Murmansk Province. Of these, 20 species are reported for the fauna of Russia for the first time, 22 species are new in the fauna of the European part of Russia; the rest species, with the exception of those specifically mentioned, are new findings previously unknown for the regions. Key words. Hymenoptera, ichneumonid wasps, European North, Russia, fauna, new records, species list. " " IN the Annals of Scottish Natural History for January 1893, p. I, Mr. R. Service records the occurrence of two specimens of Risso's Grampus Grampus griseiis (Cuv.) in the Solway Firth. One of the specimens that stranded near Carsethorn Mr. Service was able to examine in its entirety, and to his good offices the Museum of Science and Art is indebted for the opportunity of obtaining its skeleton. The bones, roughly divested of the flesh, were forwarded to Edinburgh, and have been prepared in the Natural History workshop of the museum.

  • Life History Evolution in the Parasitoid Hymenoptera Ruth Elizabeth Traynor
Life history evolution in the parasitoid Hymenoptera Ruth Elizabeth Traynor This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of York Department of Biology 2004 Abstract This thesis addresses life history evolution of the parasitoid Hymenoptera. It aims to identify assumptions that should be incorporated into parasitoid life history theory and the predictions that theory should aim to make. Both two species and multi-species comparative studies as well as up-to-date phylogenetic information are employed to investigate these issues. Anecdotal observations suggest that solitary parasitoids have narrower host ranges than closely related gregarious species. There are several possible reasons for this; for example gregarious species may be able to exploit larger bodied hosts because they can fully consume the host, which may be essential for successful pupation to occur. Comparative laboratory experiments between two closely related species of Aphaereta, one of which is solitary and the other gregarious, show no difference in the extent of host range. This study does, however, suggest that differences in the realized niche that each species occupies in the field may result from life history differences between the species. These differences may themselves have arisen due to solitary or gregarious development. The first multi-species study in the thesis uses a data set, compiled for the parasitic Hymenoptera by Blackburn (1990), to address factors that may influence body size and clutch size. This study builds on previous analyses of the data (see Blackburn 1990, 1991a/b, Mayhew & Blackburn 1999) through the use of up-to-date phylogenetic information. Evidence is found that the host stage attacked by a parasitoid is associated with both body and clutch size, due to the amount of resources available for the developing parasitoids.
