DRAFT Buletin PSM Apr Jun 2019 CS6 Bil. 60 / 19 APR / JUN 2019 Martabatkan Sejarah Malaysia ALLAHYARHAM TAN SRI OMAR MOHD HASHIM MENINGGALKAN KITA BUAT SELAMA-LAMANYA Kita terkejut dan sedih di atas pemergian Tan Sri Omar Mohd Hashim, Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Eksekutif Persatuan Sejarah Malaysia yang kita kasihi pulang ke rahmatullah pada 6 Jun 2019 yang lalu. Dengan kembalinya Tan Sri Omar Mohd Hashim, negara kehilangan sebutir permata tak ternilai yang terjelma dalam seorang hamba Allah tokoh yang sukar digantikan. Moga-moga Allah mencucuri ke atas rohnya dan meletakkan beliau dalam kalangan orang yang beriman. Amin. Tan Sri Omar Mohd Hashim merupakan tokoh terbilang dalam bidang pendidikan. Sepanjang perkhidmatannya sebagai pegawai kerajaan, beliau berkhidmat dengan tekun dan cekap sehingga memperoleh kepercayaan untuk memimpin beberapa buah agensi antaranya Jabatan Pelajaran Sabah dan Johor, Majlis Peperiksaan, Kementerian Pendidikan dan Suruhanjaya Pilihanraya. Sepanjang tempoh perkhidmatan, Omar dikenali sebagai pegawai kerajaan yang jujur dan ikhlas. Persatuan Sejarah Malaysia amat terasa kehilangan Tan Sri Omar Mohd Hashim yang telah meneraju dan memimpin PSM hampir lebih 30 tahun. Beliau telah memberi sumbangan dan jasa yang amat besar yang akan dikenangi dan diabadikan kepada sebuah bangunan indah tersergam indah di Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. [email protected] Senarai Filem Berjiwa Patriotik dan Kenegaraan yang Pernah Dihasilkan APR / JUN 2019 Perutusan Pengerusi Jawatankuasa Eksekutif Warkah ini merupakan terbitan kali pertama yang tidak memaparkan sudut pandangan dan citra kepimpinan organisasi PSM daripada kaca mata tokoh utamanya, Allahyarham Tan Sri Omar Mohd Hashim. Siri-siri terbitan WARKAH yang terdahulu, beberapa tahun sejak dimulakan, memuatkan pelbagai idea dan fokus kenyataan yang bernas serta bermotivasi daripada Allahyarham Tan Sri. Elok sekali kita merujuk kembali kepada tulisan-tulisan dan cetusan-cetusan pemikiran tersebut, agar dengannya dapat diperolehi serba peringatan dan renungan bagi kita seterusnya lanjut mengasaskan pergerakan PSM yang sentiasa teguh dan progresif. Agak begitu kaya dan pelbagai pengalaman memimpin dan Dato’ Haji Jumaat Dato’ Haji Mohd Noor Pengerusi membentuk satu pasukan berpadu, bergiat dan bergiat yang telah Jawatankuasa Eksekutif beliau wariskan kepada kita. Persatuan Sejarah Malaysia Inilah satu perspektif bimbingan kemajuan kehadapan yang wajar kita tangani. Sekian lama kita telah berjaya menerbitkan WARKAH sebagai satu cerminan PSM menampilkan pelbagai renungan dan refleksi mengenai bibit-bibit sejarah yang mahu kita ungkapkan. Kecil atau kasar rupa dan hakikat unsur-unsur sejarah ini, pastinya ada menzahirkan nilai-nilai kesedaran sejarah tempatan atau ……….., dan mungkin lebih tinggi memberikan kesan kebangsaan yang tidak boleh diabaikan. Unsur-unsur sejarah ini bukan sahaja merupakan warisan kerakyatan dan kebangsaan, tetapi lebih bersifat sebagai ‘khazanah’ yang ada tempat, peranan dan aplikasi dalam pembangunan Negara. Khazanah lazimnya membawa implikasi milik dan modal. Justeru wajar sekali kita takrif dan namakan sejarah itu sebagai suatu “modal budaya” (Cultural capital). Iaitu satu modal keturunan yang kita miliki dan dilestarikan dari zaman ke zaman. Terkini oleh kerana tumpatan daripada globalisasi dan pelbagai aplikasi kaitan-internet banyak menekankan asas dan penggunaan ‘modal ekonomi’ dan ‘modal pelaburan’ (economic and investment capital), demi menentukan karektor atau watak “manusia pekerja” yang hanya memajukan produktiviti dan keuntungan, maka kelihatan manusia pekerja serupa itu, bergerak, bertugas dan wujud sebagai “manusia jentera” berketerampilan berasaskan jiwa ekonomi tetapi kurang atau tanpa lengkap dengan ‘jiwa sosio-budaya’ yang mensejahterakan. Manusia pekerja atau warga masyarakat tanpa berjiwa sosio-budaya yang sepatutnya dapat didikan atau asuhan melalui “cultural capital” bangsa atau kaumnya, adalah merupkan kelompok pekerja atau warga yang rugi, hambar dengan kehilangan kesejahteraan jati diri. Mereka tidak mesra budaya. Terkini di peringkat asuhan awal kanak-kanak (early years education), telah timbul kesedaran betapa perlunya diberikan tekanan kepada proses asuhan-didik yang tidak mengenepikan “cultural capital”. Matlamat murninya ialah demi mempersiap dan melahirkan warga kecil dan dewasa lengkap mewarisi segala aspek sosio-budaya yang mensejahterakan. Sejarah sebagai “cultural capital” memberikan imbangan yang logikal dan humanistik kepada rangka dan agenda pembangunan Negara dan rakyat. 3 APR / JUN 2019 PSM DI SANA SINI KUNJUNGAN KE RUMAH KELAHIRAN TAN SRI ELYAS OMAR Pada 23 April 2019, Dr Zahidi dalam rangka menyiapkan biografi Tan Sri Elyas telah berkunjung ke rumah kelahiran Tan Sri Elyas Omar di alamat rumah No 460, Tanjung Tokong, Pulau Pinang. Sebelum berkunjung ke rumah tersebut, Dr Zahidi telah singgah di Perpustakaan Hamzah Sendut Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) untuk mendapatkan salinan foto pidato umum ketika Tan Sri Elyas Omar mendapat ijazah doktor kehormat dari USM dan juga mendapatkan salinan akhbar Straits Echo tahun 1936, iaitu tahun kelahiran Tan Sri Elyas di mana pada waktu itu, Pulau Pinang merayakan ulangtahun ke-150 pembukaan Pulau Pinang oleh Francis Light. Ketika berkunjung ke rumah kelahiran Tan Sri Elyas, Dr Zahidi mendapat bantuan Tuan Hj Zakaria Mohd Noh iaitu abang ipar kepada adik Tan Sri Elyas yang tinggal di Tanjung Tokong. Keluarga Tan Sri Elyas tinggal di rumah tersebut yang kini berbumbung zink dan berlantai papan. Rumah tersebut kini telah dijual tetapi masih tersergam indah. Dr Zahidi juga telah berkunjung ke Sekolah Kebangsaan Tanjung Tokong dan Masjid Tuan Guru Haji Hassan yang merupakan datuk kepada Tan Sri Elyas. Selepas itu, Dr Zahidi telah menemui En Effendi Nordin, seorang peguam di Batu Feringgi. Beliau adalah anak saudara kepada Tan Sri Elyas Omar yang mengumpul maklumat tentang salasilah keturunan keluarga Tuan Haji Hassan Alfusanah iaitu datuk sebelah ibunya. LAPORAN BENGKEL MENULIS MEMOIR, BIOGRAFI DAN AUTOBIOGRAFI ANJURAN UIAM DAN MAPIM Majlis telah diadakan pada 7 April 2019 bertempat di Bilik Kuala Lumpur, PWTC. Majlis bermula pada jam 3.00 petang dengan taklimat tentang pengenalan bengkel oleh Prof Madya Dr Roosfa Hashim dari Penerbit UIAM. Tiga pembentang kertas kerja ialah: 1. Sasterawan Negara Dato’ Dr Zurinah Hassan 2. Puan Sri Fatini Yaakub 3. Sri Diah Shaharuddin RUMUSAN 1. Bengkel ini adalah satu saluran pertemuan antara peserta-peserta bengkel yang terdiri dari penulis-penulis biogra; 2. Di dalam penulisan biogra, penyelidikan perpustakaan/arkib amat perlu dan penting; 3. Banyak mengadakan wawancara untuk mendapatkan sumber maklumat; 4. Mengikut Sri Diah, adalah tidak seharusnya mengikut plot dan tema dalam penulisan. Apa yang dilakukan beliau ialah mengumpul anecdote mengikut folder lepas itu dicantumkan penceritaan tersebut; 5. Fatini mengunakan kaedah mengemukakan soalan–soalan untuk mendapatkan maklumat; 6. Beliau menghadapi masalah apabila tokoh menyemak setiap ayat dan mengedit tulisan beliau; 7. Tidak semua orang bersetuju untuk diwawancara; dan 8. Perlu ada kaedah lain untuk mendapat maklumat dari mereka. 4 APR / JUN 2019 SERI PATTANI Oleh DATO’ DR WAN SHAMSUDDIN MOHD YUSOF Seri Pattani adalah sepucuk meriam seberat 10 tan milik Kerajaan Patani Darusalam di zaman silam. Sejarahnya bermula sebelum tahun 1785 lagi apabila Raja Perempuan kedua Raja Biru (1616-1624) melaksanakan kawalan dan keselamatan yang ketat ke atas negerinya untuk menghadapi ancaman dan serangan dari Siam. Pembuatan bedil atau meriam besar juga telah juga diusahakan tiga laras daripadanya masing-masing diberi nama “Seri Negara”,”Seri Pattani” dan “Maha Lela” dapat disiapkan oleh sekumpulan tukang di bawah pimpinan seorang pandai ina bernama Lim Taw Kin. Beberapa siri serangan dan peperanggan berlaku antara Siam dengan Patani. Namun, Patani tidak dapat ditundukkan dengan mudah. Hanya pada tahun 1785 ketika di bawah Sultan Muhammad Shah, barulah Patani dapat ditewaskan.Tentera Siam melakukan kekejaman ke atas rakyat Patani dan bertindak membakar hangus istana Sultan di Kerisik. Ribuan rakyat Patani ditawan, kaki dan keting mereka dicucuk dengan rotan dibawa kembali ke Bangkok. Di sana, mereka dipaksa menggali sebatang sungai yang terletak di tengah tengah Bandaraya Bangkok yang kini dikenali sebagai “Sungai Sejuta Airmata”. Dua laras meriam besar iaitu “Seri Negara” dan “Seri Pattani” juga dibawa pulang ke Bangkok sebagai cenderamata. Malangnya “Seri Negara” jatuh di Kuala Patani sewaktu diangkut naik ke kapal manakala “Seri Pattani” seberat 10 tan selamat dibawa ke Bangkok dan dipamerkan di hadapan Kementerian Pertahanan Thailand sebagai simbol tawanan dan kemenangan mereka di samping puluhan meriam-meriam lainnya yang terus terperap disini sejak dua abad yang lalu.     Our Badminton Greats The sport is believed to have been invented around 1873 in England and named after the country estate, Badminton, of the Duke of Beaufort whose guests called it "the Badminton game." The Bath Badminton Club, organized in 1877, developed the first written rules and in 1893, the Badminton Association of England was founded as the first national governing body and the first All-England championship was held in 1899. Popularized by British army officers in India, badminton eventually made its way to Malaya. ccording to school records, the game was first introduced to the V.I. in 1911 by the Headmaster, Mr. B. E. Shaw. Perhaps it was at the V.I. that the first badminton matches were played in Malaya but we cannot be absolutely sure of this. What we can be sure of is that these humble beginnings beside the Klang River and later on Petaling Hill helped spawn some of the great shuttlers who put Malaya and Malaysia on the badminton map of the world. Two gravel courts were initially made by Mr Shaw for the use of the Senior Cambridge classes and another court was added later on for the juniors. In 1921, three other courts became available for the use of the Lower School boys and Chua Chong Kwee was appointed the V.I.’s first badminton captain in 1923. As the sport gained popularity, Mr Shaw’s successor, Mr Richard Sidney, appointed Mr Yap Swee Hin as the badminton master in 1925 and added eight more new gravel courts for inter-house matches.

    THE DEVELOPMENT OF BADMINTON AS A GLOBALISED GAME AND THE DOMINANCE OF CHINESE AND KOREAN FEMALE BADMINTON PLAYERS AND TEAMS IN UBER CUP COMEPETITIONS AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES: CHALLENGES FOR ASEAN COUNTRIES TO IMPROVE ELITE BADMINTON TRAINING TO COMPETE AND OVERCOME THESE LEADING PLAYERS AND TEAMS Dr Lim Peng Han [email protected] ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to is to find out why Chinese and Korean female badminton players are the only two countries in the world to win the Uber Cup since 1984. Furthermore, Chinese and Korean female badminton players won the most Olympic Games medals since badminton was included as an event in 1992. Why the standard of these players could surpass Malaysian female badminton players in spite of the fact that the Badminton Association of Malaysia was established in 1934, much earlier than the China Badminton Association in 1954 and the Korean Badminton Association in 1957. This research made a comparative study on the development of badminton in China, Korea, Malaysia and Indonesia from the historical, cultural, institutional (the education pyramid and centres of sports science research on badminton) and stakeholder perspectives. The findings revealed that China and Korea have progressed faster than other ASEAN countries like Malaysia and Indonesia due to the following factors. Firstly, they have built a structured badminton pyramid, starting with the schools as the base and progressively moving upwards. Secondly, they have support from stakeholders like the government in the provision of training facilities, funding and material and mental support for the players. Thirdly, they have back up sports science research to support their training programmes.

The MFS Scholarship Programme offers Swedish university students an opportunity to carry out two months’ field work, usually the student’s final degree project, in a country in Africa, Asia or Latin America. The results of the work are presented in an MFS report which is also the student’s Master of Science Thesis. Minor Field Studies are primarily conducted within subject areas of importance from a development perspective and in a country where Swedish international cooperation is ongoing. The main purpose of the MFS Programme is to enhance Swedish university students’ knowledge and understanding of these countries and their problems and opportunities. MFS should provide the student with initial experience of conditions in such a country. The overall goals are to widen the Swedish human resources cadre for engagement in international development cooperation as well as to promote scientific exchange between unversities, research institutes and similar authorities as well as NGOs in developing countries and in Sweden. The International Relations Office at KTH the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, administers the MFS Programme within engineering and applied natural sciences.

A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy At Lincoln University By Mohd Salleh Aman Lincoln University New Zealand 2005 11 Abstract of thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirement for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Leisure policy in New Zealand and Malaysia: A comparative study of developments in sport and physical recreation by Mohd Salleh Aman This comparative study assessed the usefulness of the convergence thesis as a tool for understanding developments in leisure, recreation and sport in New Zealand and Malaysia. The study examined the interrelationship between 'global' and 'local' or 'contingent' factors and their impact upon leisure behaviour, leisure policy and leisure structures. 'Local' factors included institutional arrangements (notably political ones) and national cultural practices. A social history of New Zealand and Malaysia with particular reference to leisure, sport and recreation and national cultural practices was provided as a context for discussion of these issues. The study utilised a mixture of archival and library research and semi-structured interview, and was guided by an explicit comparative framework, concentrating on the development of leisure, sport and recreation in the two countries between 1970 and 2002. Interviews with 'key players' in both countries captured valuable data in the form of 'insiders' views' on leisure behaviour, policy and structure. These data were analysed with the relevance of the convergence thesis in mind. This study shows that contemporary leisure behaviour in New Zealand and Malaysia is shaped by the media and is highly commercialised, placing a high value on entertainment, and involves increasingly passive forms of participation.

    Peristilahan Dalam Dunia Sukan Ahmad Faisal Mohamed Fiah, Pensyarah Kanan, Fakulti Komunikasi dan Pengajian Media, Universiti Teknologi MARA Abstrak Sukan merupakan antara elemen penting dalam menyatukan rakyat di mana-mana negara khususnya di Malaysia. “Kuasa” yang dimiliki sukan boleh membuatkan rakyat berbilang agama, bangsa mahupun mempunyai ideologi politik yang berbeza bersatu. Namun, sukan hanya mampu dicapai menerusi medium yang betul, iaitu media cetak, elektronik dan media dalam talian. Peminat sukan mengikuti perkembangan sukan menerusi medium ini dan pastinya sukan perlu disampaikan menggunakan bahasa yang betul dan difahami oleh mereka yang mengikutinya. Bagi pengamal media, terutamanya media yang menggunakan bahasa kebangsaan, inilah antara dilema mereka. Kebanyakan istilah sukan merupakan istilah yang bukan bahasa kebangsaan. Media tidak mempunyai banyak “pilihan” selain menggunakan istilah asal memandangkan ketiadaan istilah yang sama maksud dalam bahasa kebangsaan. Kertas kerja ini cuba mengupas “fenomena” istilah dalam sukan khususnya media. Selain itu, kertas kerja ini turut membincangkan serba sedikit perkembangan media yang berkaitan dengan sukan. Kertas kerja ini juga mencadangkan kepada pihak berkuasa yang terbabit dengan peristilahan untuk mengemukakan suatu daftar kata terkini istilah sukan bersesuaian dengan perkembangan dunia digital hari ini supaya terus relevan hingga ke masa hadapan.
