  • History of Badminton
Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton, Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th September 1893. It was the first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England. From nine founding members, the IBF, now called the Badminton World Federation (BWF), has over 160 member countries. The future of Badminton looks bright. Badminton was officially granted Olympic status in the 1992 Barcelona Games. Indonesia was the dominant force in that first Olympic tournament, winning two golds, a silver and a bronze; the country’s first Olympic medals in its history. More than 1.1 billion people watched the 1992 Olympic Badminton competition on television. Eight years later, and more than a century after introducing Badminton to the world, Britain claimed their first medal in the Olympics when Simon Archer and Jo Goode achieved Mixed Doubles Bronze in Sydney.

Last December we presented our case to the IOC’s Programme Commission and this day in May we shall do so to the IOC Executive Board in St Petersburg, Russia, along with the other shortlisted sports for the place on the programme of the 2020 Olympic Games. The presentation group will be led by WSF President Ramachandran and features our two world champions Nicol David and Ramy Ashour, whose passion and charisma are sure to impress the IOC President Jacques Rogge and his fourteen IOC Board colleagues. The bid film will be shown – it features the two players and has already been viewed nearly 110,000 times, along with the video giving a snapshot of the 185 countries that play squash (you can see both at http://www.worldsquash.org/ws/?p=10564) – along with a new film, that is being finished featuring innovation, broadcast and presentation. The spoken presentations will be accompanied by over 70 great slides illustrating the points made. What happens next is not confirmed. Originally it was stated that one sport would be recommended for ratification by the full IOC membership but indications now are that a few sports may be put forward for the final vote. That will be made clear on the evening of 29th May and we must hope that we are there for the final decision in Buenos Aires on 8th September.

  • Squash Pulse ISSUE XV/ OCT, 2020 SQUASH PULSE 40Th Annual General Meeting
Squash Pulse ISSUE XV/ OCT, 2020 SQUASH PULSE 40th Annual General Meeting Due to COVID-19, the 40th Annual General Meeting, which was due to be held in conjunction with the Asian Team Championships in March at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was postponed. After the Malaysian Government’s extension of the Recovery Movement Control Order and the consultation with ASF’s Management Committee, the Executive Committee decided to host the Annual General Meeting this year virtually on Saturday, 19 December 2:30pm. “The pandemic has had an unprecedented impact on the world of sports. Our beloved sport, squash, is inevitable to face the challenge, too. Numerous squash activities in the region this year were either Mr. David Mui, MH JP, ASF’s President suspended or cancelled. However, we must prepare for the time when the pandemic subsides and regular activities resume,” said Mr. David Mui, MH, JP, ASF’s President, “thus, amidst the uncertainty and the ‘new normal', we must adopt technology and new thinking to develop and promote our sport.” Mr. Mui continued, “Though the member nations are not able to meet in person this year, we hope that we can still meet online for the AGM to share everyone’s current situation and to plan ahead next year’s activities.” This is the first time for ASF to host a virtual Annual General Meeting in response to this unprecedented pandemic. Year 2020 is a challenge for the world and for all sports too. We understand that most our member national federations have also been going through some trying times due to the coronavirus pandemic.

  • FAM Needs You More, Sultan Ahmad (NST 25/09/2002)
25/09/2002 FAM needs you more, Sultan Ahmad Lazarus Rokk; Jugjet Singh FOOTBALL Association of Malaysia (FA) president Sultan Ahmad Shah (pic) became the the latest candidate for the Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) president on a day when Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor declined nomination for the post. The other candidate so far, is former BA of Malaysia president Tan Sri Elyas Omar who was nominated by Kuala Lumpur. Sultan Ahmad, president of the Pahang HA, is in London right now, but he has given the go-ahead to Pahang HA vice-president C. Jeyaratnam to nominate him. "I have received the green light to nominate Sultan Ahmad Shah who is an avid hockey fan, and I will send in the nomination tomorrow (today)," said Jeyaratnam. But Sultan Ahmad, who already has his hands full with rebuilding soccer, should respectfully decline. For, although Sultan Ahmad is capable of leading the MHF, he has yet to finish his job with the FAM - to put Malaysian soccer in the world class level. And that job needs more urgency, especially since Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad had expressed his disappointment over the poor standard of Malaysian soccer, not once, but twice. The first time the PM talked about the declining standard of soccer in relation to South Korea and Japan whom we had beaten in the 70s and 80s, was in a Cabinet meeting last month. And then last Friday, he took a nation by shock when he reiterated his disappointment, in of all forums, the Budget announcement that was telecast live on national television.
