Northwest Fly Tyer & Fly Fishing Expo 15 The Hareline - dubbin story The Oregon Fly Fisher “The Nor-vise history” By Tim O’Neil

The Nor-vise was developed by professional research engineer and fly-tyer Norm Norlander. Unsatisfied with the current state of hook-holding in the world of fly tying, Norm set out to develop a better, faster, easier system. Fast forward 30 years later, and the Nor-vise is truly one of the most innovative tools in the fly tying industry.

The Nor-vise is designed to “spin” the hook to apply material. With the hook shank held in perfect alignment with the axis of rotation (on centerline or zero axis) this allows us to spin the hook rather than just rotate it, a huge advantage when tying a fly! “Spinning” the hook shank on center provides for better thread tension control and more precise material placement.

Norm knew that spinning the hook would provide so Bobbin. The Automatic Bobbin solves the problem of many advantages over the current method of tying. Think getting the bobbin out of the way, yet instantly having about it…90% of what we do while tying a fly involves it right back to where it is needed by winding the slack wrapping some type of material over the hook shank. thread up automatically. The thread on the thread post Whether you are dubbing, wrapping a lead underbody, is in perfect alignment with the hook shank, and from winding hackle, or finishing a thread head, Norm’s here the vise may be rotated or spun to wrap on materials invention allows us to perform all of these tasks more without adding additional thread to the hook. efficiently. Speaking of dubbing…you should see us dub on the Nor-vise! Like any new technology it takes a bit of practice to master, but when you do, you will wonder how you ever lived The second part of our system, and possibly more of a without it! The Nor-vise Fly Tying Vise and Automatic revelation than the vise itself- is the Nor-vise Automatic Bobbin will indeed help you “Tie Better Flies Faster”.
