Fly Tying Guide 7-6-2015 INTERNET FLY TYING GUIDE WWW.Addresses for Videos, recipes, patterns and other Fly Tying related items Issue: 7/6/2015 Total guide references: 3,002 Author – Dennis Stead (Note: Fly Index in back of PDF) In January 2012, I was introduced to fly tying by a group of people that belonged to the Missouri Trout Fishermen’s Association (MTFA). I was hooked. I soon realized that flies to be tied came in all sizes, shapes, colors and names. Well I thought, maybe I would start collecting fly tying patterns (recipes) and put them in a data base in my computer. At first, I thought it would be easy. Then I found The Fisherman’s Handbook of Trout Flies by Donald DuBois. This was published in 1960, and it included a comprehensive identification list of 5,939 trout fly patterns. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time, I could not even guess how many new trout fly patterns (recipes) were added. Collecting fly tying patterns (recipes) was not the way to go. I watched fly tying DVD’s and thought that this was a great way to have the pattern (recipes) and also learn how to tie the fly pattern. Then one of the MTFA members suggested that I search for the fly tying patterns (recipes) on the Internet, especially YouTube. Have you ever searched YouTube for a fly tying video or the Internet for a fly tying recipe? If the answer is yes, then you know that both have more fly tying instructions on just about every pattern you have heard of. Some of the video or recipes are excellent, in the detail and the description from the tyers. Others are OK and then some are just terrible. After a detail search for your fly pattern, you may have watched a number of videos on the same fly. Your web search is over and you know that YouTube has your pattern and shows you how to tie them when you are ready to tie. Now comes the time to tie that fly, and you go to YouTube but have to start the search all over taking valuable time from tying. You might not even find the fly tyer’s video you like from your last search. If only you had written down the YouTube web address. You might have written the web address down, but cannot find where you left your notes. That has happen to me over and over again. So I decided to create a database with key information on YouTube fly tying videos and other patterns (recipes) that were not on YouTube. When I want to tie a certain pattern, I could review my database, find the pattern, click on the web address and then start watching the video or go to the fly tying pattern (recipe). As you will see in the following pages, the information I started to collect would grow and grow and grow. At first I only want one of the best video of each pattern. I soon realized that there are many great tyers with the same or different approach on that fly tying pattern. Then there were patterns with only one video and maybe not the quality I wanted but just needed to know that there was a video pattern available for review. If a video was not available, I would get the web address of the pattern (recipe) and list the fly. My database got started by collecting: Fly Video Name, Video Producer, Main Fly Type, Sub Fly Type, and Web Address. After over 1,000 fly names were in my database, I ran a report and just felt like something was missing. I started to use my information to tie flies and soon realized that I did not have a picture of the fly to be tied and the web address. These were the missing pieces to my database. So, you guessed it, I had to go back to the beginning; look up the video, pause it when I get a good image of the fly, Do screen captures. Clean up the screen captures using another software program and then find some way to get that picture of the fly into my database. Hundred and hundred hours later the following is the finished data base report. Just a note, some fly tying videos might have been removed when you try the wed address, and if that is so, I will have noted it in the database. If I want a fly tying pattern that I cannot find on YouTube, I would find it on the web and you will see the file marked PDF. The web address will lead you to the web site and you might have to click on the site and fly name to get to that pattern. Finished, Oh no, this is just the beginning. For who knows how many fly tying videos or fly tying pattern are on the internet? In addition to those already posted, more and more are being added each day. Wish me luck but enjoy what is already finished. This Internet Fly Tying Guide is as of 7/6/2015 with 3,002 references. When I add new videos and patterns, I will generate a new Internet Fly Tying Guide; you can check this date against the last guide you received to see if you have the latest. Swaziland Population: 2,876,122 (1985) Capital: Umtata Orange Natal Free The World’s First Fishing Fly Stamps State Cape Province Lesotho Building a Business in South Africa In 1976, Mr. Barry Kent, his partners, and the Republic of Transkei Development Corporation built a fishing fly manufacturing Eastern Cape plant at Butterworth, Transkei, South Africa. Transkei Western Cape The company, named High Flies Ltd., was one of the most modern fishing-fly manufacturing plants in the world. Pricing, quality and clever product marketing proved to be very successful. By 1979 High Flies was employing more than 350 labor-intensive Transkeians, producing over 1,000 dozen flies each day. These flies are used mainly in fly-fishing for trout and salmon. The entire production was exported to countries where these fish are prolific: America, the British Isles, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Scandinavia, and other European countries. An idea for promoting other Transkei industries was created by depicting fishing flies on postage stamps. The outcome produced a series of five sheets for each year from 1980 through 1984. Each sheet contains five different fly patterns arranged in se-tenant format. Although the last issue of these stamps appeared in 1984, the factory closed in 1983 due to a corrupt business partner and poor management by the South African/Republic of Transkei Development Corporation bureaucrats.     Klinkhamer Special (presented by Alex Blaque) History: This pattern was designed and first tied by Hans van Klinken in 1984. The L T Caddis however was given the now recognized name ‘Klinkhåmer Special’ by his colleague Hans de Groot. Other tyers including Tomas Olsen & Roy Richardson are credited by Hans for similar solutions but this particular emerger pattern is Hans’ own work. Uses: The Klinkhåmer Special, or Klinkhammer as it’s often known, or even just Klink, is a very popular fly originating from Western Europe. Tied with a parachute hackle, it is an emerging caddis pattern fished during corresponding hatches. Colour and size variations of the fly adapt it for use during other hatches and make it useful as a searching fly in a similar way to the Adams. The Klinkhåmer Special is traditionally a trout and grayling pattern but should be considered for all kinds of fishing situations where fish will rise to a fly; it’s certainly been used to take Salmon and I’ve caught some good size chub with it. How to fish: Originally fished to best effect by it’s author using a ‘downstream’ presentation, the pattern is effective when presented using any standard dry fly technique. Effective for trout, grayling, and any free rising species. But it seems I had time to get drafted into the KZN regional FOSAF committee to supportDr. Bill Bainbridge in a review of FOSAF policies. I will of course be better placed to provide feedback to members about the activities of FOSAF. As you may know its crunch time for the Alien Invasive Species gazette call for comments. Time will tell… On the club front I’m concerned about the viability of the Bobbin. Under Ian’s hand he produced almost all the content, perhaps we have all become lazy because of this? Stelios has been trying to get content in from members because this is YOUR newsletter. The Bobbin cannot be a one sided affair. Stelios has had limited success in getting cooperation for his last two editions. Do members want this newsletter? Should we discontinue the Bobbin? Members need to decide….. FROM THE EDITOR After much whingeing, whining, cajoling and coaxing, I managed to get sufficient content to produce this issue of the Bobbin. I am sure that members must now be rather weary of me at this stage! When I was asked to edit the Bobbin, I felt that it should be a club newsletter with content produced by members – and this is what I have endeavoured to achieve.
