    Heriot’s Angling Club Outing Reports 2001-2008 2001 Lindores, day session, 25th March A bit of a nip in the air! It was snowing for a while! And your secretary had a fish first cast of 2001! An odd assortment of flies and methods worked, including my boat partner and I getting 2 each on buzzers on the slime line. Most of the top bags came from the bottom end, where we fished, but we never really got a handle on it. Meanwhile, fishing the top end, one of our rods had 8 for the day, but others struggled up there, and the fishery management seemed sure the bottom end was best. The rest of our top bags went 7s, 6s, 5s, 4s, 3s, 2s, 1s and a blank. Oh, and our top rod... He had 13: 5 more than anyone else!!! -- Hi-D all day in the shallow water down the bottom end. What really threw us though, was boat 11 (not our club), who sat in the one spot all day, chucking out slime lines, slow F-of-8-ing and taking fish after fish. These guys must have had 30-odd for their boat. We saw a white lure going out (which was one of our successful flies) but heard them telling their mates they were getting them on Diawl Bachs. We weren't sure how much kidology was going on, but it's not impossible they were telling the truth. As usual, in these situations, we tried to copy them and got nowhere with it!!! Our club return was 14 rods weighing in 54 fish for 99 lb 4 oz, with 22 more returned.

    INTERNET FLY TYING GUIDE WWW.Addresses for Videos, recipes, patterns and other Fly Tying related items Issue: 7/6/2015 Total guide references: 3,002 Author – Dennis Stead (Note: Fly Index in back of PDF) In January 2012, I was introduced to fly tying by a group of people that belonged to the Missouri Trout Fishermen’s Association (MTFA). I was hooked. I soon realized that flies to be tied came in all sizes, shapes, colors and names. Well I thought, maybe I would start collecting fly tying patterns (recipes) and put them in a data base in my computer. At first, I thought it would be easy. Then I found The Fisherman’s Handbook of Trout Flies by Donald DuBois. This was published in 1960, and it included a comprehensive identification list of 5,939 trout fly patterns. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time, I could not even guess how many new trout fly patterns (recipes) were added. Collecting fly tying patterns (recipes) was not the way to go. I watched fly tying DVD’s and thought that this was a great way to have the pattern (recipes) and also learn how to tie the fly pattern. Then one of the MTFA members suggested that I search for the fly tying patterns (recipes) on the Internet, especially YouTube. Have you ever searched YouTube for a fly tying video or the Internet for a fly tying recipe? If the answer is yes, then you know that both have more fly tying instructions on just about every pattern you have heard of.

    First Cast ... Now that Santa has sleighed away for another year, we wish A Happy New Year to all of our members and welcome to the first 2016 edion of your ‘The Big Puddle’. Looking back over the 2015 season, it’s been a mixed year dominated by difficult weather condions, mainly strong changeable winds. It has been an oen frustrang season with fewer fish in the net. However, Rutland gave us some of its finest dry fly and floang fry fishing during the season and even as I write some fine, fit trout are being caught on floang lines with dries, nymphs and fry paerns sll working in the depths of Winter. It’s not been a year for big numbers of large fish, although a good few have been caught, however, the fish are in great shape and feeding well in the unusually mild December condions. Let’s hope that with more than usual trout sll in the lake we can look forward to catching some heavy over-wintered fish of which Rutland water is famous, when the lake opens in Mid-March. It’s been a quiet couple of months from the boats, with bank fishing producing beer results. A smaering of predator anglers have been jigging the depths in search of Zander, resulng in fewer numbers but bigger average size this year. RWFF hope that you have enjoyed the Winter social evenings at the Cricket Club, we’ve had good aendances for these evenings and if you’ve missed them so far, please come along in January and enjoy some great real ale, smashing sandwiches, interesng talks and a bit of fun with like-minded fellow fly fishers.

    Recommended Flies for Hallington A Month-by-Month Guide by Phil Bilbrough The list below is by no means exclusive, rather it is a starting point for anglers new to Hallington. Many experienced anglers will have most, if not all, of these flies already in their boxes. Beginners on a budget and members who may occasionally struggle to catch should find the list useful as it covers most eventualities at the two reservoirs. All of the flies are available commercially from good tackle shops and by mail order. Many of the flies listed will catch fish throughout the season, not just in a specific month but I have tried to indicate when they will be most useful. This explains the repetition towards the end of the season. For example, if conditions are right, a G&H Sedge will catch best in August and September but will also work whenever fish are moving at the surface. Fishing methods are many and varied but in general, lures and wet flies are fished quickly and imitative patterns such as nymphs and pupae more slowly to copy the movement of the naturals. Dry flies fished on the surface may be left motionless or retrieved slowly. For most of the season a floating fly line is all that will be needed but it sometimes helps to get the flies deeper if the weather is cold or if it is hot and bright. Midge-tip, sink-tip and intermediate lines are usually enough for bank fishing but for boat fishing medium and fast-sinking lines can sometimes be useful.

    A GUIDE TO FISHING AT HALLINGTON RECOMMENDED FLIES, METHODS AND TACTICS BY PHIL BILBROUGH November 2018 1 INTRODUCTION The two reservoirs at Hallington are relatively low in nutrients, the water is generally quite clear with a light peat stain. The water clarity is helped by the large numbers of filter-feeding freshwater mussels that live in the muddy areas of the lake bed. The main aquatic fly life is midges and sedges with smaller numbers of upwings (including mayfly) and occasionally stonefly. In a water with fairly low productivity, terrestrial insects are an important food source for the trout. Terrestrials are blown or fly in from the surrounding trees and farmland and fall onto the water surface, sometimes in large numbers, and this soon results in rising trout. The shortage of aquatic food and the steady trickle of terrestrials results in a trout population that are generally looking towards the surface for their food. When conditions are right and fish are rising, good sport can be had with a dry fly. Since many insects trapped in the surface film are small and black, it follows that small black flies fished on or close to the surface are a good starting point. When there is a large fall or hatch of one particular type of insect the fish can become a bit more selective and a close copy of the food item may be needed. It is surprising how close to the bank the trout will come, often into water only knee deep. However, being water supply reservoirs, the two lakes can be subject to large fluctuations in water level and this can upset some of our theories about trout behaviour and where our quarry may be found.
