Bruno De Wever UITERST RECHTS IN VLAANDEREN VOOR, TIJDENS EN NA DE TWEEDE WERELDOORLOG | Het Verdinaso Onlangs verschenen weer enkele boeken over de uiterste rechterzij- de in België. Nog net voor uitgeverij Soethoudt definitief over de kop ging, bracht ze een boek uit van Jan Creve over de geschiedenis van het Verdina- so en zijn milities (1). Creve zal wel niet gelukkig zijn met het feit dat hij wellicht kan fluiten naar zijn auteursloon, maar ik vermoed dat hij al evenmin heeft gejuicht toen hij zijn boek voor het eerst zag. Soethoudt is er nl. in geslaagd de talrijke en originele foto's die Creve bij elkaar heeft gezocht op een abominabele manier af te drukken. Overigens heeft de uitgeverij voor de vormgeving van het boek zich duidelijk geïn- spireerd op de reeks “Retrospectief van uitgeverij Lannoo. Jan Creve is een jong historicus, enkele jaren geleden afgestudeerd aan de RUG. Zijn boek is gebaseerd op zijn licentiaatsverhandeling over de milities van het Verdinaso. Vandaar dat hij in dit boek een ster- ke nadruk legt op deze formaties en minder op de andere geleding-en van het "Verbond van Dietse Nationaal Solidaristen". De structuur van het Verdinaso berust op vier peilers : het Verdinaso zelf a!s politieke beweging, de Dietse Militie die na de wet van 29 juli 1934 werd omge- vormd tot de Dinaso Militanten Orde (DMO), het Verbond van Nationa- le Arbeiders Syndicaten dat later werd omgevormd tot het Verbond van Dinaso Corporaties en tenslotte het Verbond van Dinaso Knapenven- dels (de Jong-Dinaso's). In 1936 werd ook nog het Verbond van Dina- sovrouwen en meisjes opgericht. -

Zoals Superman, niet zoals Hitler’. De uitdagingen van het culturele geheugen in Astronaut van Oranje (2013) van Andy Fierens en Michaël Brijs Jan Lensen, Freie Universität Berlin Abstract. This essay offers an analysis of the aesthetical and political implications of the seemingly random use of names of figures from Belgian collaborationist history in the novel Astronaut van Oranje (2013) by Flemish authors Andy Fierens and Michaël Brijs. More specifically, it investigates the framing of the memory of World War II in Belgium by means of a satirical fantasy story that fuses elements from the dystopian imagination, science fiction, Gothic horror, and popular culture. Drenched in satire, hyperbole, absurdities, coarse humor, and blatant clichés, the novel eschews historiographical relevance and deliberately ignores the sensibilities that govern public and political discourses about this war past. By doing so, so I argue, it offers a provocative engagement with established practices in both Belgian and Flemish cultural memory, implementing what I will call a ‘politics of commemorative irreverence’. Introduction In their overview of the Belgian national electoral results and party systems since 1830, Matagne and Verjans (2012:85) concluded that Belgium advanced from a bipolar political system since 1848, via what Giovanni Sartori (1976) called a two-and-a-half party system in the 1920s to the fractionalized and highly volatile multiparty system that present-day Belgium is worldwide known for. In this paper we study the linkages between the changing political system, the process of electoral reforms and the development of the party system. We intend to do so focusing on an old democracy: Belgium. We analyze origin, rise and fall of Belgian political parties participating in the national legislative elections, of the nature and complexity and change of the national electoral system, of the persistence, consolidation and change of the national party system, and last but not least of the perception of democracy in itself.2 These issues are among the most central issues studied by political scientists. There are plenty of explanations for today‟s party system fragmentation. Ever since the 1960s political parties in Belgium, in The Netherlands and in many other Western European representative democracies were principally uprooting from social cleavages. -

De schaduw van de leider Joris Van Severen en het na-oorlogs Vlaams-nationalisme (1945-1970) BART DE WEVER licentiaat in de geschiedenis Op 20 mei 1940 viel het doek voor Joris Van Severen. Het VerDinaso zou zijn leider niet lang overleven. De volgelingen gingen tijdens de bezetting diverse richtingen uit, van de meest extreme Duitsgezinde collaboratie tot het verzet. Dat ging gepaard met een felle strijd over de gedachtenis aan Van Severen die door de verschillende strekkingen werd geclaimd als rechtvaardiging Kennelijk had dus niet zozeer de ideologie als wel de persoon van Van Severen houvast aan de beweging gegeven. Rommelpot – één van de eerste Vlaams-nationalistische periodieken van enige omvang na de oorlog – schreef in zijn editie van 5 mei 1946: “Tijdens de bezetting werden vele halve waarheden en hele leugens over Joris Van Severen geschreven. Sedert september ’44 is het stil geworden rond zijn naam. Als eenmaal zijn vroegere volgelingen – voor zover zij niet ten onder gingen in het avontuur der collaboratie – terug aan het woord zullen komen, zal het weer niet aan tegenstrijdige beweringen ontbreken. Voorlopig zwijgen allen. Want al zou men Van Severen moeilijk een ‘verrader’ kunnen noemen in de huidige betekenis van dat woord (...) toch schrikken de meesten er voor terug, er aan te herinneren dat zij eens ‘de allereerste fascist in Vlaanderen’ gevolgd hebben.” De inschatting van het blad was correct. De oud-Dinaso’s die na de oorlog weer politiek actief werden, kwamen terecht in zowat alle secties van het katholiek-rechtse kamp. In de christen-democratische zuil vinden we namen als: Willem Melis, eerste hoofdredacteur van de heruitgave van De Standaard in 1947; Frantz Van Dorpe, VEV-voorzitter; Rafaël Renard, adjunct-kabinets- chef van de minister van Binnenlandse Zaken Arthur Gilson (1961-1965) en voorzitter van de Vaste Commissie voor Taaltoezicht (1964-1976); Jef Van Bilsen, secretaris-generaal en later commissaris van de koning voor ontwikke- lingssamenwerking. -

S & CB (2015), 27, 154–179 0954–4194 PABLO DE FELIPE, PIERRE BOURDON AND EDUARDO RIAZA Georges Lemaître’s 1936 Lecture on Science and Faith Georges Lemaître, a Mathematical physicist and a Catholic priest, is generally recognised as the key founding father of modern Big Bang cosmology. In recent years, his contribution to our modern scientific cosmological model has been increasingly recognised. However, his contribution to the science and faith field is still not very well known, especially in English. One of the reasons is that his views are dispersed in lectures that for the most part remain in French and have not been reprinted for many years. Here we present, for the first time, as far as we are aware, a full English translation of one of the key texts on science and faith from Lemaître: a 1936 lecture delivered at Malines (Belgium). All the crucial ideas in Lemaître’s view of science and faith relations appear here. These ideas were present in his early work and continued to appear in his lectures throughout the rest of his life. They are expressed in this lecture in some detail and with a strong literary force that gives them, in some cases, the character of aphorisms. As he would recount in later years, at the young age of nine he took the extraordinary decision of becoming both a scientist and a priest: ‘There were two ways of arriving at the truth.
