Pick a Direction It’s important to make sure that from the start your campaign works with your politics. Are you focusing on the quality of the service or too-high fares? Challenging councillors to take specific action or mobilizing the public? What are your demands? Will you invite only councillors, or other political and community leaders to take the challenge? If you’ll invite others, who and why? As an example, FTO focused on mobilizing the public and improving transit service. We encouraged people to use hashtags to share their complaints which demonstrated public support for transit improvements. We sent councillors a survey to complete each day and one at the end of the challenge, which allowed us to collect stories and examples of the issues with transit. Our survey asked questions about which demographics were best served by our transit system, and what issues they faced in their day. We also offered a sign-up for non-councillors, so that citizens could take part. Make sure you know your goals so you can design a coherent campaign. 3 Transit Week Challenge Toolkit 2. Start Organizing To encourage councillors to be involved and to capture a wide net for your media coverage, we recommend partnering with other organizations as “endorsers.” What this means is that they support the challenge, and may choose to promote it. -
Ottawa Transit Challenge 2020
Transit Challenge 2020 Ottawa Transit Riders, Free Transit Ottawa, Ecology Ottawa, and Healthy Transportation Coalition Ottawa Transit Challenge 2020 Why the Transit Week Challenge? In 2019, Free Transit Ottawa organized a Transit Week Challenge that took place from Monday, February 4th to February 10th 2019 as a way to bring focus to transit issues within the city. Councillors were invited to rely on transit for one week – to experience the city the way many people in Ottawa already do every day. Participants were encouraged to ride transit to and from work, to shopping, to appointments, and to social events. The Challenge represented the daily reality of Ottawa’s transit dependent residents: students, commuters, low income bus riders, and others without access to vehicles. 2020 The second annual Transit challenge took place from Monday, February 17 to Sunday, February 23, 2020. It was organized by the Ottawa Transit Riders, Healthy Transportation Coalition, Ecology Ottawa, and Free Transit Ottawa. We also reached out to fellow transit advocates in other cities and were delighted that Edmonton decided to conduct a similar challenge. Civic Engagement of Residents
MAKING VOICES COUNT A KIT FOR ENGAGING CITY DECISION MAKERS ABOUT THIS KIT FALL 2016 This kit encourages the long-term civic engagement of residents. It helps residents bring community concerns to the attention of City decision-makers so that positive change happens. This kit originated from an initiative originally called Making Votes Count, funded by the Ontario Trillium Foun- dation and the Catherine Donnelly Foundation, engaging Ottawa residents living on low-income in elections (2013-2016). Currently called Making Voices Count (MVC), with additional funds from United Way Ottawa, MVC is an initiative of the Coalition of Community Health and Resource Centres, the City for All Women Initiative (CAWI), community partners and residents to work with City of Ottawa decision-makers to create a city for all. This Civic Engagement Kit was identified by the Coalition of Community Health and Resource Centres (CCHRC) as an important tool for its staff, Board members and advocacy groups to help the Coalition build the long-term civic engagement of residents and bring issues to the City of Ottawa for change. City for All Women Initiative (CAWI) remains committed to its history of training and support- ing women to have a voice in city decision making. In using this kit, we can influence and bring positive change for the health and wellbeing of all Ottawa residents. We especially want to engage residents whose voices are least likely to be heard by City decision makers, including women from diverse backgrounds, people who are racialized, Aboriginal, LGBTQ+, newcomers, older adults, youth, people living with a disability, and/or people living in poverty and rural residents. -
Elected Candidates Views on Greenspace Issues
Outlook for Greenspace Issues with the newly elected Council City Council will be called upon in the next term of Council to deal with a number of policies, by-laws and plans concerning greenspace in Ottawa. The Urban Forest Management Plan will need to be funded through budget appropriations, the Site Alteration By-law, adopted by the current Council, will be reviewed in two years to evaluate its effectiveness. The Urban Tree Conservation Bylaw will be updated and the Official Plan 5-year review will provide an opportunity to review the Greenspace Masterplan, which has not been updated since 2003. In its recent survey of candidates for City Council, the Greenspace Alliance of Canada’s Capital asked specific questions on each of these issues, seeking to ascertain where the prospective councillors stood on these issues. This report focuses only on the candidates who were actually elected to Council. Eleven of the 23 elected councillors participated in the survey. Five of the seven new councillors responded, with only Jenna Sudds and Laura Dudas missing, while six of the incumbent councillors also responded. They are Mathieu Fleury, Tobi Nussbaum, Catherine McKenney, Jeff Leiper, Riley Brockington and Stephen Blais. Urban Forest Management Plan This 20 year plan, made up five 4-year slices, was approved by the current council. However, funding to undertake the activities identified in the plan needs to be secured on an annual basis. Candidates were asked: Funding of the UMFP has only been approved by council for the first year. If elected, will you support the funding of years two, three, and four of the Urban Forest Management Plan? All eleven participating councillors responded in the affirmative. -

Complete Streets” Wins Overwhelming Approval
YOUR DECISION VOTE FOR A HEALTHY & GREEN OTTAWA-ELECTION 2014 ALL-CANDIDATES SURVEY “COMPLETE STREETS” WINS OVERWHELMING APPROVAL A solid consensus among city council candidates favours making the city’s streets safe and convenient for all modes of transportation, not just cars. An overwhelming majority support greater spending on cycling and pedestrian infrastructure, and speeding up the construc- tion of new bike paths and bike lanes. A survey conducted by Ecology Ottawa shows over eight out of ten candidates would prioritize pedestrian, cycling and affordable public transit infrastructure over automobile infrastructure to meet future growth. A similar number of candidates pledged to ensure all street construc- tion and renewal projects incorporate “Complete Street” principles to make streets accessible to all people, especially pedestrians, cyclists and users of public transit. Slightly fewer, though still more than eight out of ten candidates, sup- port accelerating implementation of the city’s plans for more bicycle paths and bike lanes. Each candidate’s response can be found in the table below, orga- nized by ward. Safe and Convenient Streets Many Ottawa streets are dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians, and too many neighbourhoods lack affordable and convenient public transportation options. Badly designed streets not only discourage active lifestyles and limit transportation choices, they can increase traffic congestion and hike road maintenance costs. Recognizing the problem, in 2013 Ottawa City Council endorsed a “Complete Streets” approach to ensure our city’s streets are de- signed to provide safe and comfortable access for people of all ages, genders and abilities. Such streets should accommodate multiple modes of travel and can include such features as on-road bike lanes, wider sidewalks, protected crossings, landscaped areas, and traffic- calming measures. -

[email protected] January 17, 2020 Interim Report 18. Invoking the Code of Conduct to Publicly Oblige City of Ottawa Politicians to Demonstrate Due Regard for Transparency and Accountability A. Introduction The title of this interim report emerged after completing interim reports 2 and 3, and wondering, How many politicians at all levels of government would simply ignore surveys asking them about transparency and accountability? And, continuing that vein, What are the odds that majorities on councils or the leaders of political parties pay any actual heed to citizens’ concerns about transparency and accountability? After all, it appears fair to say that the history of politics in Canada since Confederation is that if politicians do not impose transparency and accountability conditions on themselves, it is very difficult for citizens to oblige them to do so. Moreover, and as we learn with great regularity, even hand-on-heart, electorate- pleasing promises of any kind made by individual politicians and political leaders as core parts of election campaign platforms are readily dropped with no hint of regret or remorse. From a practical research perspective, then, it seemed highly likely from the early stages of the pilot study that a number of politicians could simply choose to ignore this work, even though regard for transparency and accountability is widely held to be a central feature of a free and democratic society. -
Letter to Premier Ford Reopening of Outdoor
April 28, 2021 Dear Premier Ford, We are writing to you today to urge the Provincial Government to consider re-opening outdoor recreational activities that can be safely enjoyed in a physically distanced manner, including golf, tennis, and pickle ball. We would also support activities such as basketball, and skateboarding in skate parks, as long as good COVID-19 protocols are in place, such as physical distancing and mask wearing. The pandemic has stretched on for over a year now, and the residents of Ottawa are looking for safe ways that they can get outdoors to be physically active, and to maintain their mental health and wellbeing. The Stay-At-Home Order, and the necessary expansion of restrictions required to protect the health of our communities is not in question, and we are equally concerned about the current state of the pandemic, including the variants of concern which are taking a hold in our community. We also appreciate that the province is operating in a very challenging and ever- changing environment. Our concerns revolve around removing the few remaining safe ways that people can be active outdoors, in a physically distanced way. Activities such as golf, tennis, and pickle ball, all lend themselves to physical distancing. When distancing requirements are adhered to, these types of outdoor activities can be a safe way for people to enjoy public spaces during the pandemic. Golf courses in the Ottawa area have also gone to great lengths to introduce additional measures to ensure the safety of their guests. These include requiring golfers to remain in their vehicles until their tee time and removing the rakes from sand pits. -

2021-2022 Forecast Capital Construction - AAC (Long List) The list below shows a selection of capital construction projects for 2021/2022 in which the City of Ottawa Accessibility Design Standards will be applied to the greatest extent possible. Many of these projects contain exterior paths of travel for which the potention provision and placement of a rest area will be decided in the upcoming design phase of the project based on numerous factors, such as the results of the consultation, available space, property requirements, location of transit stops, and volume of pedestrian traffic. If a rest area is to be provided on an individual project, its design would follow the Accessibility Design Standards. Many of the projects listed have existing on-street parking areas which are available to Accessible Parking Permit holders. Any adjustments to those areas would be determined during the upcoming design phase of the project.
