VAL DIGGLE: A POETICS OF UNCERTAINTY A poetics of uncertainty: a chorographic survey of the life of John Trevisa and the site of Glasney College, Cornwall, mediated through locative arts practice By Valerie Ann Diggle Page 1 VAL DIGGLE: A POETICS OF UNCERTAINTY VAL DIGGLE: A POETICS OF UNCERTAINTY A poetics of uncertainty: a chorographic survey of the life of John Trevisa and the site of Glasney College, Cornwall, mediated through locative arts practice By Valerie Ann Diggle Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of the Arts London Falmouth University October 2017 Page 2 Page 3 VAL DIGGLE: A POETICS OF UNCERTAINTY VAL DIGGLE: A POETICS OF UNCERTAINTY A poetics of uncertainty: a chorographic survey of the life of John Trevisa and the site of Glasney College, Penryn, Cornwall, mediated through locative arts practice Connections between the medieval Cornishman and translator John Trevisa (1342-1402) and Glasney College in Cornwall are explored in this thesis to create a deep map about the figure and the site, articulated in a series of micro-narratives or anecdotae. The research combines book-based strategies and performative encounters with people and places, to build a rich, chorographic survey described in images, sound files, objects and texts. A key research problem – how to express the forensic fingerprint of that which is invisible in the historic record – is described as a poetics of uncertainty, a speculative response to information that teeters on the brink of what can be reliably known. This poetics combines multi-modal writing to communicate events in the life of the research, auto-ethnographically, from the point of view of an artist working in the academy. -
History of Cornish Dance and Its Origins
History of Cornish Dance Folk dance is more than just a collection of steps movement and music; it is a form of human expression and its essence lies within its community role and social context rather than purely commercial or artistic interests. Sharp was riding the crest of European romantic nationalism when he collected, and mediated, folk dances as an expression of Englishness in the first quarter of the twentieth century. At much the same time there was a parallel, but Celtic, revivalist movement in Cornwall. As well as identifying with the revival of the Cornish language and links with the other Celtic communities this movement was also pro-active in recording and promoting folk customs, including dance. The story of folk dance in Cornwall, from medieval roots, through narratives of the nineteenth Century folklorists, the activity of the Celtic revivalists and on to the present day, is a fascinating one that reflects the distinct cultural profile of Cornwall. A tantalising glimpse of medieval dance in Cornwall is provided a twelfth Century Cornish / Latin vocabulary which was written to aid the learning of Latin. It is a short vocabulary of common words people were expected to be familiar with and includes the translation of the Cornish lappior as saltator and lappiores as saltatrix; male and female dancer respectively. Lapyeor continued to be used as a dialect term for dancer in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and by the early twentieth century was associated with step dancing. It is poignant to learn that the small boys employed as surface workers in the tin industry were called lapyeors because one of their first tasks was to aid separation of the ore as it was washed by “dancing” on it ankle deep in the cold water. -

Alma Ward Hampton Memoir Page 1 LIFE IN CORNWALL In a village called Herland Cross, Cornwall, England, lived John Hampton (born about 1814), who married Elizabeth Curtis (Born about 1818). John rented or leased land which was near Godolphin Cross where the owner of the Estate lived, which contained a house and shed and land enough to keep a few cows and chickens. Over the years they had three sons and three daughters, John, Grace, William, Annie, James and Elizabeth. William known as Billy, who eventually came to Maple Ridge in the year 1879, was born February 19, 1854, and it is his story that will be related. For centuries Cornwall has been famous for its copper, tin and lead, and ships came from afar to obtain them. In those times work was provided for women and children at the surface which they called "the Bal a Celtic name for "mine place". Ore was brought up and placed on tables and was then broken into small pieces with hammers. At an early age, Billy did this work, until he was old enough to go down into a mine to work. At this time it was tin that was mined. The men went down the mine shaft in a bucket to a great depth. Sometimes they were given a fast ride for a prank, which was rather scary. Here he learned how to hammer in the iron drill, which they called a needle, to make a hole for the gunpowder for blasting. In the early days they used a goose quill for the fuse. -
Meeting Our Cornish Cousins
Meeting our Cornish Cousins Whenever possible, members of the TCA connect with our Cornish cousins; the descendants of those courageous Cornish emigrants who took the risky steps of leaving their homeland to seek brighter pastures for themselves and their families in the New World. At each meeting, we share our love of Cornwall and make new friends and sometimes meet long lost relatives! These meetings have, and will, take place in Australia, North America and Cornwall itself. The Kernewek Lowender Kernewek Lowender (or Cornish Happiness) is a weeklong event organized by the Cornish Association of South Australia and usually takes place every two years in the Yorke Peninsula also known as “Australia’s Little Cornwall”. It was here that many Cornish miners and their families settled in the 1850’s where they laboured to tame the hot, desolate land and build a new life. The first such Kernewek Lowender gathering attended was in May 2013. From the tours we took and the talks we attended, we learnt of the hardships and the joys experienced by those brave Cornish pioneers. One of the most moving events was the “Dressing of the Graves” at Moonta Cemetery. Local school children dressed in smocks for the girls and cap and vest for the boys, clothing that would have been worn by children in the 1800’s, scattered rose petals over the unmarked graves of children who died from the drinking the water contaminated by mining. SOME ELEMENTS OF IDENTITY - Popular Consciousness - Constitution - History & Landscape - Mining - Language - Music, Song and Dance - Food - Some Customs - Gorseth KERNOW BYS VYKKEN ______________________________________________________________________________ Introduction Celtic Cornwall? Is this a title than can be given to my little ancestral land by the sea in north west Europe? There have been competing views about what constitutes Celtic Cornwall. As Amy Hale stated in an article; “During the course of the (Cornish) Revival too much time and energy has been spent justifying Cornwall’s Celticity!”…. One asks, why was there any doubt?” To which I am tempted to reply – ‘who cares? .. we know we are the Celtic Cornish so let’s get on with life!’ But given that you have probably come expecting a workshop on the very subject I had better restrain myself. In essence today I will seek to explore with you the dual nature of being Cornish - that of the context in which one exists, and a continuing Celtic identity which largely comes from within. Along the way I will heavily draw heavily on others who are more learned than me, look at some elements such as language, and we may also have some fun. It is worth looking first in depth at the two words that make up the title of this workshop. Celtic? Whenever and wherever the term Celtic is used, it seems to mean something different! There is part of me that says, ‘well that’s very Celtic’! I am sure we all hold a different picture in our minds. -

Cornish Dance Music (Ilow Dons Kernow) Merv Davey Written for the Music Kernow series (Cornish Story / Institute of Cornish Studies) In this article Merv Davey takes a look at Cornwall’s oldest musical genre and explores its interaction with our social history. Cornish Dance Group Hevva (Photo: Courtesy of Hevva) This Cornish Story is about the folk dance traditions that have evolved in Cornwall and the music that goes with them. Just as the dance traditions mirror Cornwall’s social history so the tunes that accompany them reflect the influences that have created the modern repertoire of Cornish dance music. The story starts with the Medieval Cornish mystery plays, the ‘Gwary Myr’. They marked a renaissance of the Cornish Language in the middle ages and also give us a context for early dance music in Cornwall. They were a mixture of public entertainment, religious education and political comment and usually performed promenade style in the round. During the course of the play and particularly at the end, musicians are called upon to play for dancing: “Pybugh menstrels volonnek may hyllyn donsia dyson” Pipe ye hearty minstrels that we may be able to dance forthwith. (From the 16th century Mystery Play Beunans Meriasek) The instructions in the Mystery Plays do not describe the music or the dances except to indicate that they should be fast and hearty. The medieval Cornish carols are strongly linked culturally to the mystery plays so that tunes collected in Cornwall, like ‘Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day’ and ‘I Saw Three Ships’, give us a feel for the music that was played. -

These traditions are alive and thriving as part of a living and evolving tradition, alongside many other forms of traditional dance present in England today. This presentation aims to show both traditional folk dance and its contemporary interpretations. Dances can be spontaneous or ritualised, fixed or improvised, irreverent or solemn and all points in-between. This presentation introduces some of the distinctive features of English folk dance and its most popular forms. Thousands of people, of varied ages and backgrounds, perform and enjoy English folk dance in its many guises. Although distinctive, it has surprising similarities to traditional dances from across the British Isles, Europe, and other parts of the world. For example, stick dances that share visible similarities to morris dancing can be found as far afield as the Basque country and Kerala in Southern India. Appalachian clogging combines British roots with Native American and African influences: it evolved in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of the USA, and is now a popular performance dance form in England. -

Great Grinning Gaukums: The Guize Dance Traditions of Cornwall “Raising Glasney” Lecture 2013 – Merv Davey 1 Great Grinning Gaukums: The Guize Dance Traditions of Cornwall “Raising Glasney” Lecture 2013 – Merv Davey Great Grinning Gaukums Gorthewer Da “Great Grinning Gaukum” is the description introducing the Guizers in William Sandys dialect tales1. Gaukum is the dialect work for fool and derives from the Cornish word “Goky” / foolish. In his History of Cornwall written in 1816 Polwhele describes the Guize “as a kind of carnival or Bal masque which answers to the Mummers of Devon, and the Morrice dancers of Oxfordshire. In Celtic Cornish ges, means mockery, a jest.”2 This evening we will explore the story of Cornish Guizing and examine some examples of this tradition as it exists today. Meanings of Tradition To start with I would like to offer a slightly different approach to understanding Folk Tradition Folk tradition is not a fixed artefact from certain period in history; it is better understood as a contemporary process or a social phenomenon that takes place within a community. It is the process whereby a song, a dance, a story, a custom or a combination of all of these is passed on person to person and generation to generation and altered a little each time it moves on.3 Not only does the narrative and nature of the performance change but so does the meaning that it has for the participants. The prevailing social climate will impact upon the experiences and perceptions of the performers and influence this change. It is like the family Christmas tree, each year it is decorated in a slightly different way, some old ornaments lost some new ones added and what it represents will change as the family grows up and their circumstances change. -
