Lyle Tompsen, Student Number 28001102, Masters Dissertation The Mari Lwyd and the Horse Queen: Palimpsests of Ancient ideas A dissertation submitted to the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Celtic Studies 2012 Lyle Tompsen 1 Lyle Tompsen, Student Number 28001102, Masters Dissertation Abstract The idea of a horse as a deity of the land, sovereignty and fertility can be seen in many cultures with Indo-European roots. The earliest and most complete reference to this deity can be seen in Vedic texts from 1500 BCE. Documentary evidence in rock art, and sixth century BCE Tartessian inscriptions demonstrate that the ancient Celtic world saw this deity of the land as a Horse Queen that ruled the land and granted fertility. Evidence suggests that she could grant sovereignty rights to humans by uniting with them (literally or symbolically), through ingestion, or intercourse. The Horse Queen is represented, or alluded to in such divergent areas as Bronze Age English hill figures, Celtic coinage, Roman horse deities, mediaeval and modern Celtic masked traditions. So you are thinking of having a barn dance! Have you organised one before? If you haven't then the following may be of use to you. A barn dance is one of the only ways you can get everyone involved from the start. NO experience is needed to take part. Anyone from four to ninty four can join in. The only skill needed is being able to walk. All that is required is to be able to join hands in a line or a circle, link arms with another dancer, or join hands to make an arch. The rest is as easy as falling off a log. You dance in couples and depending on the type of dance you can dance in groups from two couples, four couples, and upwards to include the whole floor. You could be dancing in lines, in coloumns, in squares or in circles,. It depends on which dance the caller calls. The caller will walk everyone through the dance first so all the dancers know what the moves are. The caller will call out all the moves as you dance until the dancers can dance the dance on their own. A dance can last between 10 and 15 minutes including the walk through. -

The research combines book-based strategies and performative encounters with people and places, to build a rich, chorographic survey described in images, sound files, objects and texts. A key research problem – how to express the forensic fingerprint of that which is invisible in the historic record – is described as a poetics of uncertainty, a speculative response to information that teeters on the brink of what can be reliably known. This poetics combines multi-modal writing to communicate events in the life of the research, auto-ethnographically, from the point of view of an artist working in the academy. -
History of Cornish Dance and Its Origins
History of Cornish Dance Folk dance is more than just a collection of steps movement and music; it is a form of human expression and its essence lies within its community role and social context rather than purely commercial or artistic interests. Sharp was riding the crest of European romantic nationalism when he collected, and mediated, folk dances as an expression of Englishness in the first quarter of the twentieth century. At much the same time there was a parallel, but Celtic, revivalist movement in Cornwall. As well as identifying with the revival of the Cornish language and links with the other Celtic communities this movement was also pro-active in recording and promoting folk customs, including dance. The story of folk dance in Cornwall, from medieval roots, through narratives of the nineteenth Century folklorists, the activity of the Celtic revivalists and on to the present day, is a fascinating one that reflects the distinct cultural profile of Cornwall. A tantalising glimpse of medieval dance in Cornwall is provided a twelfth Century Cornish / Latin vocabulary which was written to aid the learning of Latin. It is a short vocabulary of common words people were expected to be familiar with and includes the translation of the Cornish lappior as saltator and lappiores as saltatrix; male and female dancer respectively. Lapyeor continued to be used as a dialect term for dancer in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and by the early twentieth century was associated with step dancing. It is poignant to learn that the small boys employed as surface workers in the tin industry were called lapyeors because one of their first tasks was to aid separation of the ore as it was washed by “dancing” on it ankle deep in the cold water. -

Traditional Song Forum meeting, Sheffield, 8th November 2008. The meeting was attended by 18 TSF members and 4 visitors. It was organised and chaired by Steve Gardham, apologies being received from Steve Roud, Doc Rowe, and a number of other members. Research Reports Johnny Adams. A public workshop had been held recently to promote the activities of the Village Music Project on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, which would be repeated at a number of venues in the next year or so. Currently, a 200-year old book was being conserved at CSH, and funds would be raised and the restored book dedicated to the memory of Barry Callaghan. The Paul Graney project, involving the setting up of an archive of recordings from the Manchester area, was on hold due to lack of time. The Folkopedia project was going slowly, with only two people making contributions, and thought would need to be given to some changes of priority. But the main need was for more people to input material. There were so many projects going on needed “to talk to each other”, including Ian Russell’s idea of a “Virtual Archive”. Gwilym Davies. A CD of the Shropshire singer Ray Driscoll was out, Brockwear, a village near Chepstow, have a carolling tradition, with recordings of the main singer, and it is hoped to revive this for Christmas 2009, and he had done a programme on Radio Gloucester asking for information on travellers, which had given a positive response.
