The project itself was initially, a simple exercise in Citizenship in a large South Yorkshire comprehensive school. The motivation behind this was to place teenagers at the heart of their community. The results of this venture had repercussions which are still being felt in the small mining town of Maltby which lies in the borough of Rotherham, not far from Sheffield. In 2002, the music department at Maltby Comprehensive School in partnership with the South Riding Folk Arts Network set about the task of teaching a group of 13 and 14 years old students the longsword dance. In this undertaking much support and encouragement was given by the national folk organisation, the English Folk Dance & Song Society. A group of students learned the dance whilst others learned to play the tunes to accompany the performance. Financial support from the school’s PTA allowed Head of Art, Liz Davenport, to create the striking costumes worn by the dancers. More support appeared in the form of folk arts development agency Folk South West who generously discounted their ‘College Hornpipe’ tunebook for the project. Players of orchestral instruments suddenly found themselves being extended by the apparently ‘simple’ melodies arranged by Paul Burgess. -

The project was led by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and in partnership with other cultural partners across England. The Full English digital archive (www.vwml.org) continues to provide access to thousands of records detailing traditional folk songs, music, dances, customs and traditions that were collected from across the country. Some of these are known widely, others have lain dormant in notebooks and files within archives for decades. The Full English learning programme worked across the country in 19 different schools including primary, secondary and special educational needs settings. It also worked with a range of cultural partners across England, organising community, family and adult learning events. Supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, the National Folk Music Fund and The Folklore Society. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process. This performance is subject to government guidelines Shirley Collins looks back over her distinguished career as an icon of English folk with Martin Aston , ahead of this special performance to celebrate Heart’s Ease. ‘Time is a bit of a nonsense at the moment,’ ventures Shirley Collins MBE, referring to the stop-start nature of life under COVID-19, before the UK’s third tranche of lockdown ensured that her streamed Live At The Barbican show in February had to be postponed. But as Collins points out, she has experienced worse. In her teens, the country faced the polio outbreak, ‘and you couldn’t go to school or visit anyone,’ she recalls. And there was the small matter of WWII. Collins’ family were evacuated, bombed out of their house, and Shirley and sister Dolly were machine- gunned by a German plane. ‘Mum said, if we saw one to dive under a hedge, so we did,’ she recalls. ‘But the dreadful thing about the pandemic is that you can’t see or feel it coming.’ One wonders if anyone will be writing songs about the pandemic in the same way that people did about the dramas of everyday life in centuries past – love, death, lust, betrayal, pressganging, witchcraft, worker’s rights, murder, and beyond. Even after WWII, Collins’ own life has seen more than its fair share of drama, as detailed in her two memoirs: America Over the Water, about her trip to the American South in 1959 with the song collector Alan Lomax; and the self-explanatory All in the Downs: Reflections on Life, Landscape, and Song, plus one documentary, The Ballad Of Shirley Collins, which told the story of how a young Sussex girl emerged to become the undisputed grand dame of traditional English folk, only to effectively disappear, abandoning recording and performing for 34 years - from 1980 to 2014. -

Traditional Song Forum meeting, Sheffield, 8th November 2008. The meeting was attended by 18 TSF members and 4 visitors. It was organised and chaired by Steve Gardham, apologies being received from Steve Roud, Doc Rowe, and a number of other members. Research Reports Johnny Adams. A public workshop had been held recently to promote the activities of the Village Music Project on the occasion of its 10th anniversary, which would be repeated at a number of venues in the next year or so. Currently, a 200-year old book was being conserved at CSH, and funds would be raised and the restored book dedicated to the memory of Barry Callaghan. The Paul Graney project, involving the setting up of an archive of recordings from the Manchester area, was on hold due to lack of time. The Folkopedia project was going slowly, with only two people making contributions, and thought would need to be given to some changes of priority. But the main need was for more people to input material. There were so many projects going on needed “to talk to each other”, including Ian Russell’s idea of a “Virtual Archive”. Gwilym Davies. A CD of the Shropshire singer Ray Driscoll was out, Brockwear, a village near Chepstow, have a carolling tradition, with recordings of the main singer, and it is hoped to revive this for Christmas 2009, and he had done a programme on Radio Gloucester asking for information on travellers, which had given a positive response.
