In the news I have read reports of my local MP "having a go" at morris dancing with sticks, of a Plymouth artist who realised that almost no-one ever actually paints morris dancers and is hoping to remedy that with lifesize portraits - and own up, who was the 36-year old Bradford man who wrote on the "Secrets" Times blackboard, "I'm a Morris Dancer"? But it's been a good year for events. I have a report of the Plough Monday celebrations in Ramsey in January from George Frampton. I was fortunate enough to attend the Mary Neal day at Cecil Sharp House in February where the climax was the handing over of the Mary Neal papers by Lucy Neal to the care of Vaughan Williams Memorial Library. -

Subterranean Bourgeois Blues: The Second English Folk Revival, c. 1945-1970 Julia Yvonne Mitchell UCL This thesis is submitted for the degree of PhD. 2 I, Julia Yvonne Mitchell, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 3 Abstract This thesis explores the folk revival phenomenon in England, through an original examination of its place in the social and political history of the country after the Second World War. Although its roots stretched back to the early twentieth century, the post- war English folk revival significantly occurred in the context of the nation’s de- industrialisation, and exposed tensions between, on the one hand, a nostalgic lament for a fast-disappearing working class life, and a ‘forward-looking’ socialist vision of working-class culture. The original contribution to knowledge of this project lies in its analytic approach to the English folk revival as an important part of the post-war political culture. It looks at the revival from the outside in, and contextualizes the movement in the social and political story of post-war England, while also placing it within a dynamic transnational framework, a complex cross-Atlantic cultural exchange with its more well-known American contemporary. In so doing, this thesis contributes to the existing historiographies of folk revivalism in England, as well as the social and political historiographical discourses of the postwar period: the continued salience of class in English society; the transformation of the nation’s economic infrastructures; the social and political influence of the Welfare State – the folk revival tapped into all of these overlapping strands, and helped to magnify them. -

That unaccompanied trio produced three LPs in England and four fine American tours. Peter has two recent solo American LPs, one a traditional collection fea turing unaccompanied singing, songs with Anglo concertina or guitar, and whistle tunes, The other is a collection of Rudyard Kipling Barrack-Room Ballads, set to traditional tunes or written ones—a powerful set. Peter was also res ponsible for a folk opera, "The Transports," performed in England and recorded with an all-star cast. So if you ap preciate the many styles of British Isles music, join us at the Washington Ethical Society auditorium, 77.50 - l 6th St., N.W,, in 'Washington, at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, for PETER BELLAMY in concert. He makes his first appearance in this world in a manger: the cattle are there, chewing their hay, and all around are silence, poverty, simplicity, and innocence. Angels' voices are heard in the sky, announcing peace, that peace which the new baby has brought to us. His first worshippers are Mary, his Mother, and Joseph, thought to be his father, and, after these, some humble shepherds, who have come down from the hills, led by angels' voices. Later on comes a caravan of distinguished persons, guided from far, far, away, by a star. They offer precious gifts, full of a mysterious meaning. Everything that night, at Bethlehem, spoke a language that the whole world. could understand. Thinking about this mystery, every knee will bow in adoration before the crib. Everyone will look into the eyes of the divine Infant, which gaze far away, almost as if he were reviewing then all as they pass before him, recognizing and identifying them all, and greeting then with a smile: Jews, Romans, Greeks, Chinese, Japanese, Indians, the peoples of Africa, and of every region of the world, of every age of history, the most desolate, deserted lands, and the most remote, secret, and unexplored; past, present, and future ages.
