Staff Changes and Teacher Shortages We said farewell to our teacher of Spanish, Charlotte Glen at the end of the term. We wish her well with her return to Christchurch and her new position at Burnside High School. We have been unable to find a suitable replacement to take over her Spanish language classes. Existing students at years

10, 11 and 12 will be enrolled with FARNET online learning providers. We hope to have a replacement Spanish Teacher for 2022. Year 9 students who were scheduled to do a 10-week Spanish module in term 2, will instead do an introductory module in Drama. Drama can be chosen as a subject option from Year 10 to 13 along with senior only Performing Arts Technology (Props, Make-up, Lighting, Sound). Ms Brooke Taylor takes maternity leave for the birth of her first child but will return to us in 2022. Ms Sophie Knight will start her maternity leave early in term 2. Congratulations to Mr Nick Mulligan, Ms Michelle Wilson and Mrs Adamski on the recent births of Our Values their children. SENCO role – we have appointed Miss Elena Peebles to be our new Special Education Needs Coordinator from the start of Term 2. Kaiarahi will be a new role filled by Mr Henare Pairama who will be a Te Reo and Tikanga assistant for our whanau classes at the College. Henry has previously worked with us as a Kapa Haka tutor. School Nurse - Rebecca Taupo will be joining us part-time in term 2 as a school nurse providing 3 days a week of Health Support from the main office.

Kapa Haka – Polyfest Our performance took place on Thursday April 15th – something we were unable to do in 2020 due to Whanaungatanga Covid. Our split with Wesley has seen a big increase in boys taking part in Kapa Haka which I believe Relationships is a real positive for these boys and for Waiuku college. Kia Kaha e nga tama o te roopu kapa haka o te kareti o Waiuku! My thanks to Whaea Rhema and Matua Henare and whanau, for all your mahi to get us to Polyfest this year.

Uniform Uniform regulations can be found on the Waiuku College website, including rules around jewellery. The majority of our students are great with their uniform and I thank parents for their support in this area. Small areas of concern include boys wearing ‘skinny’ bottomed long black pants and girls with nose earings which should be plain studs. Also, caps must be plain burgundy – not other colours and beanies and shoes must be plain and black.

A Long Term – Whanaungatanga! It has been a long and difficult and disrupted 11-week term! Some of our students (and teachers and Whakaute parents) are feeling the stress and anxiety from this experience. The college is mindful of these Pride & Respect impacts and our role in providing support. The appointment of a nurse, a Kai Arihi and an increase in Guidance Counselling resource from 1.5 to 2 full time persons – are some of the ways we are responding. We will always continue to monitor and prioritise the well-being of our school community and the ways we can support it. This is at the heart of our school value of Whanaungatanga.

I wish all students and staff a restful term holiday break and look forward to seeing them all back at the start of term 2.

Ngaa Mihi Kia Koutou

SENIOR GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL The Senior Girls Volleyball season has come to a quick fire close, finishing with an intensive week and a half of Volleyball Championships. Due to the latest covid lockdown, the Auckland Secondary School Championships were postponed till the 17th-19th of March. Stretching over the 3 days, the girls looked at some long days of Volleyball. They managed to come away with a couple of wins which resulted in them finishing 13th in the sought-after Division 1. Coming 13thout of 35 total girls’ teams, across 3 divisions, the girls were in a good position leading into New Zealand Nationals. The girls backed up Auckland Champs with the New Zealand Volleyball Nationals in New Plymouth from 22nd- 26th of March. Over 5 days the girls played 9 games, walking away with 4 wins. Out of these 9 games, 6 went to five sets, which roughly equated to 2hours in duration for each one. The girls did exceptionally well, returning each day with energy and resilience to play hard. Our final game secured our 9th placing in division 4. An excellent effort from each of the girls.

SENIOR BOYS’ BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT During Summer Tournament week two of our Senior boys teams entered into the new 3 x 3 Basketball Tournament held in Bruce Pullman Park. This is a new way of playing with only three players on the court at a time and only one sub allowed in your team. Both our teams were highly competitive and had many games each day of the 3-day tournament. Special thanks to Mr Mike Harper, Coach and Mrs Delwyn Lucas, Manager for supporting both teams over the whole tournament and to our boys who not only played but also took up referee duties. Team members were: Jordan Harper, Finn Strickland, Alex Lucas, Jett Sixsmith, Ethan Jacobs, Dylan Neil, Kyson Monteith and Cajun Butler. We look forward to all our Basketball teams getting prepared for the Franklin Basketball Winter Competition in Pukekohe, where we have ei ght boys and two girls teams registered to play.

EX-STUDENT KIMBERLEY CHETHAM EXCELS Kim got sponsored with CML KTM and is now training and riding with their team. She is competing in all MX3 races, alongside the woman’s class and just won Auckland Champs for 2021 out at Harrisville. Continuing to smash all her goals!

CLAYBIRD SHOOTING On Thursday 18th March the Claybird Shooting Team hosted the first Secondary Schools Competition of the year at the Auckland Met Clay Target Club in Pukekohe. A very successful day with 100 students from throughout the Auckland, and Bay of Plenty Regions attending the event. Also on the day, in the Individual section we saw Hayden Coe take out first place after a shoot off, Luke Cathcart fifth and Jack Thomas placed ninth over the whole day. The girls team of Aimee Clarke and Ella Mowbray placed third behind John Paul College and Hauraki Plains . A nice start to a new season hoping for many more successful days. SH1 Papakura to Drury South project start of works

The first stage of the SH1 Papakura to Drury South project will begin construction on 6 April following the award of a contract to widen the Southern Motorway between Papakura to Drury. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has announced Fulton Hogan as its construction contractor. The first stage of construction covers works within the existing motorway boundaries from the north side of Papakura interchange to the south side of the Drury motorway service centre (approximate area shown in photo above). Key features of this first stage include: • An additional third lane in each direction and wide shoulders for future bus services • The replacement of the Park Estate Road overbridge • A new noise wall on the eastern side of the motorway between Papakura Interchange and Park Estate Road • The upgrade of three culverts crossing under the motorway between Papakura Interchange and Park Estate Road • Treatment of all stormwater coming off the motorway (as currently there is none in this area). Additional works to follow in the next stage once consented also include: • A walking and cycling pathway along the western side of the motorway • Interchange improvements at Papakura (a new southbound on-ramp) and Drury (to allow for railway electrification and additional rail lines) • The replacement of the Bremner Road overbridge. Together these works will extend the improvements north of Papakura delivered by the Southern Corridor Improvements project. Early works about to get underway include: • Roadside vegetation clearance • Motorway resurfacing (at night during closures). Following the motorway resurfacing, traffic lanes in both directions will be shifted left to open up a works area down the centre of the motorway. Initially work will occur down the middle of the motorway at night and on the sides (including Park Estate Road) during the day. The motorway speed limit will be reduced to 80 km/h for safety reasons, and two traffic lanes in each direction will be maintained throughout construction on the project. The replacement of the Park Estate Road overbridge will be carefully staged to maintain access for those living, working or worshipping on the western side. A single lane and footpath will be maintained for access throughout construction. For construction queries, please contact the Fulton Hogan project team on 0800 796 796.
