    Music Genres and Corporate Cultures Music Genres and Corporate Cultures explores the workings of the music industry, tracing the often uneasy relationship between entertainment cor- porations and the artists they sign. Keith Negus examines the contrasting strategies of major labels like Sony and Universal in managing different genres, artists and staff, and assesses the various myths of corporate cul- ture. How do takeovers affect the treatment of artists? Why was Poly- Gram perceived as too European to attract US artists? Why and how did EMI Records attempt to change their corporate culture? Through a study of three major genres—rap, country and salsa—Negus investigates why the music industry recognises and rewards certain sounds, and how this influences both the creativity of musicians and their audiences. He explores why some artists get international promotion while others are neglected, and how performers are packaged as ‘world music’. Negus examines the tension between rap’s image as a spontaneous ‘music of the streets’ and the practicalities of the market, asks why execu- tives from New York feel uncomfortable when they visit the country music business in Nashville, and explains why the lack of soundscan sys- tems in Puerto Rican record shops affects salsa’s position on the US Bill- board chart. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with music industry per- sonnel in Britain, the United States and Japan, Music Genres and Corpo- rate Cultures shows how the creation, circulation and consumption of popular music is shaped by record companies and corporate business style while stressing that music production takes place within a broader cul- ture, not totally within the control of large corporations.

White Congolese Rumba and Other Cosmopolitanisms Most first-time listeners of Congolese popular dance music comment on the fact that this typically African musical style actually sounds like it comes from somewhere else: “Is that merengue?” or “It sounds kind of Cuban”. Given that since the beginning of Congolese modern music in the 1930s, Afro-Cuban music has been one of its primary sources of inspiration, this is obviously not a coincidence. In historical terms, it is probably more accurate to say that Cuba and other Caribbean nations have been inspired by the musical traditions of Africa, though this is not the focus of my article. While research on the question of transatlantic cultural flows can provide valuable information about the roots and resilience of culture, I am more interested in what these flows mean to people in particular times and places and ultimately what people are able to do with them, both socially and politically.

Desde aquellos experimentos con sabor afro-latino que exploramos en un capítulo anterior, las músicas de África han ido tejiendo un campo de influencia en músicas como el jazz, el rock, el pop o la música clásica. Cada vez más y mejor es apreciado el poder evocador de las músicas africanas, su riqueza rítmica y su capacidad de adaptación a cualquier campo sonoro. Desde una descarga con raíces cubanas al nuevo hip hop que contagia calles en los cinco continentes. Ahí late África. Con esta selección de SEMILLA NEGRA pretendemos repasar algunos de los episodios escritos por algunos músicos africanos en el terreno de los sonidos occidentales, ya sea a través de alianzas de intereses, versiones a lo africano o la presencia constante en los más importantes festivales de Europa y América. De ritmos foráneos adaptados a las cadencias musicales del centro de África a homenajes sentidos a importantes grupos o autores occidentales. Un recorrido por algunos de los proyectos con acento africano más interesantes que arranca precisamente con una curiosa adaptación de la canción “Wake up dead man”, de U2, en la voz de la cantante portuguesa de raíz mozambiqueña Maria João, interpretada a dúo con el pianista Mário Laginha para el álbum “Undercolors”.
