  • A Look at the New European Parliament Page 1 INTERNATIONAL TRADE COMMITTEE (INTA)
    THE NEW EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT KEY COMMITTEE COMPOSITION 31 JULY 2019 INTRODUCTION After several marathon sessions, the European Council agreed on the line-up for the EU “top jobs” on 2 July 2019. The deal, which notably saw German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen (CDU, EPP) surprisingly designated as the next European Commission (EC) President, meant that the European Parliament (EP) could proceed with the election of its own leadership on 3 July. The EPP and Renew Europe (formerly ALDE) groups, in line with the agreement, did not present candidates for the EP President. As such, the vote pitted the S&D’s David-Maria Sassoli (IT) against two former Spitzenkandidaten – Ska Keller (DE) of the Greens and Jan Zahradil (CZ) of the ACRE/ECR, alongside placeholder candidate Sira Rego (ES) of GUE. Sassoli was elected President for the first half of the 2019 – 2024 mandate, while the EPP (presumably EPP Spitzenkandidat Manfred Weber) would take the reins from January 2022. The vote was largely seen as a formality and a demonstration of the three largest Groups’ capacity to govern. However, Zahradil received almost 100 votes (more than the total votes of the ECR group), and Keller received almost twice as many votes as there are Greens/EFA MEPs. This forced a second round in which Sassoli was narrowly elected with just 11 more than the necessary simple majority. Close to 12% of MEPs did not cast a ballot. As a unique alliance between Members of the European Parliament and CEOs from leading companies, which have pledged climate neutrality by 2050, we are jointly calling upon the Commission to show more ambition and determination when it comes to making Europe’s energy system fit, already for 2030. All planned policies and measures being decided now are paving the road to climate neutrality in 2050, and that is why today’s action counts. Today, a massive ramp-up of renewable energy production must ensure that the EU renewable energy system is operational as soon as possible. Although the EU’s Renewed Industrial strategy falls short in this regard, with the upcoming legislative package we have another chance to set this right. If the EU is to be a front runner for climate friendly manufacturing through the deployment of low carbon process technologies and ground-breaking innovations, the key enablers are infrastructure, access to abundant renewable electricity supply and rapid commercialization of new processes at competitive energy prices. Without a stronger European policy focus and increased investments boosting the availability of renewables for industrial use, we not only risk delaying needed GHG reductions, affecting industrial competitiveness but also our overall credibility to deliver on our common commitments.

The maritime sector, responsible for almost 90% of EU’s external freight trade and 32% of the intra EU transport of goods is at stake. The EU’s internal market, citizens and industries need the smooth and timely transportation of essential goods, food, medicines and a vast range of products of first necessity. Mitigating the economic impact of the crisis and ensuring the continuity of industry and supply chains is of utmost importance for EU citizens and our European Single market. The expected transport of volumes for all good flows are already lagging behind the original forecasts, with a particularly negative effect on container transport. Moreover, the slowdown of the Global and European economy will have an effect of which we cannot yet determine the magnitude. Firstly, we would like to thank you and the entire Commission for recognising transport as one the most affected sectors by the COVID-19 crisis. In this regard, we also welcome the measures you have taken so far to compensate the economic damages, to guide Member States across the Union when it comes to the border management and the accompanying implementation guidelines. However, the sea and inland ports and the shipping industry urgently need a sector-specific rescue and recovery action plan in order to ensure the continuity of seaborne trade to and from the EU, as well as intra -EU, and to ensure the health and the safety of transport workers in the sector.

Eleven MEPs have already taken their seats, while the twelfth MEP will go to the European Parliament (EP) once the United Kingdom leave the European Union. The eleven MEPs come from the following parties. Four are from the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and they will join the European Peoples Party (EPP) group in the EP. Four were elected on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) list and they will join Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group in the EP.
