RUSSELL KINGDON

This year the club for the first time will produce a digital year book that will be emailed to everyone and then will be available on our club website for all to read and enjoy. This will provide a wonderful insight of the club to any new future players , coaches , sponsors and international cricketers.

You will notice in the year book we have asked the captains to nominate outstanding individual , pair and team performance so the club can identify the clubs greatest 100 performances in the clubs history. In the near future once the club has identified the greatest 100 performances in history the process will take place to identify the greatest performance of all time.

I would like to thank the many people who helped contribute to the production of the year book there are to many to mention but I would like to especially thank Carrington Shepherd.

Next season will be very exciting for the club as it will be the 30 year anniversary of the club winning its first ever premiership , 20 year anniversary of the club winning its 4th premiership in 5th grade and the 10th year anniversary of the club winning its first ever 1st grade premiership.

If there is an error in this publication please bring it to our attention so we can update the clubs history.

I would like to dedicate this year book in the memory of Carol Prince who passed away this year.

I hope you enjoy the 2010 /11 year book.

Regards

Russell Kingdon Year Book Editor

PRESIDENTS REPORT JOE VENTER

Results:

After winning the first game of the season the first side once again struggled to find winning form in the A Grade competition. We managed to beat the eventual wooden spoon winners in round 6 but after nine rounds were still two and seven and firmly in the relegation zone. An excellent win against arch rivals Whitfords in round 10 was enough to see us keep our position in the A grade – al be it by one (or eleven runs) over the entire season.

The second and third sides won the minor premiership and together with the 8th grade, Colts and One Day Division 3 side played in the finals. We made two grand finals (8th Grade and Colts) and lost both of those.

As a club we have not had a single premiership in two years despite fielding eight teams and making the final four on nine separate occasions. We no doubt have the depth, and the talent, to compete but have not delivered on our potential.

As most of you are aware we have appointed Mark Hullett as non playing coach and Ben Christie as captain of the A grade for next season. With these two gentlemen heading up the cricket department, and the continued support of Val Steenholdt and Mike Kapiteyn I am confident that next year will be productive for the club.

Financial:

As you can see from the treasurer’s report we have had a great year financially. I must caution however that some of our expenditure is cyclical and we have enjoyed the benefit of not spending on a number of major items.

The decrease in bar profits continued. The incoming committee needs to work on strategies to get members back to the club.

Turf:

I reported last year that the City of Melville were about to conduct an “Active Reserves Needs Study” and that Shirley Strickland Reserve would have a Master Plan undertaken for it. The study was finally submitted to council last month. I understand that the recommendation to council is for a second oval to be established on the northern side of the complex which will give the reserve two cricket / football ovals. The prospect of having two home games at Stricko is an appealing one.

The study also observed the ACC’s desire for a turf wicket and noted that they could not see a downside to this. The biggest concern is the allocation of water.

After many years of talk I believe the time for a formal application to council has come. We will however need to get this right and if we need to spend money on getting the application written up correctly then we will do so.

General:

It is with sadness that I include in this report the passing away of Carol Prince earlier this year. Carol was a great supporter of the club and a previous winner of the President’s trophy for her contribution to the club. On behalf of all past and present members of the ACC I extend our sincere sympathy to life member George and his sons on their sad loss.

Page 4 PRESIDENTS REPORT “CONTINUED”

Thanks:

I would like to thank the following for their work and help during the year. Firstly to Val for his dedication and commitment to the smooth running of the nets and also to Lorraine for providing an affordable feed on presentation nights. To Dec for taking on the very difficult task of pulling together a new look side and dealing with some difficult personalities. Thanks also to all the other captains who were very good at get- ting their administrative tasks done on time.

Thanks to Michael Kapiteyn, for his tireless efforts in ensuring that we fielded a side every week, and for his dedication to the role as chairman of selectors.

Angus Castley has indicated a need to rest from the committee this coming year due to increased family commitments. His contribution will be sorely missed. Thank you Angus for your help and support over the past two seasons.

Finally thanks to the rest of the committee for their work and support, in particular to the executive in Scott Curren and Murray Tribbeck.

Conclusion:

I will make myself available as president again for this coming season, should the members wish to elect me. However, I have always been of the opinion that a club needs fresh leadership on an ongoing basis to survive and grow. I therefore wish to put the club on notice that this coming season will be my last as president.

Regards

Joe Venter. President.

AMPSA TREASURERS REPORT (Applecross Mt Pleasant Sportsman's Association) ADRIAN REYNOLDS

For the 2009/2010 financial year, October - September, AMPSA made a profit of $1364.

The bulk of this is from club rent and the hire of facilities (club rooms) and training lights. The training lights on both the rugby fields and the football oval are owned and operated by AMPSA. The City of Melville has recently agreed to pay for maintenance on the training lights for the good of all users. Although cheaper for AMPSA this process is much slower.

Page 6 CHAIRMAN OF SELECTORS REPORT MICHAEL KAPITEYN

Thankyou to Joe and his Committee for entrusting me with this role for the 2010/11 season.

My first job was to find another selector. Chris Teede came to mind instantly. He has an intimate knowledge of all things ACC and has always been interested and opinionated on selection matters. Chris was outstanding for the first couple of games, however work commitments ended his position prior to Christmas. Teedy has all the makings of a fantastic Chairman of Selectors in future years.

A special mention must go to Val Steenholdt. He offered me a mountain of support and advise during the year.Terriffic to have you back at the club.

Thanks to the captains as well. You were always respectful of my opinions and thoughts at every meeting.

As a club we must support our 1st Grade side. We scraped in to save relegation. The hard work now begins to catch up to a competition which has got away from us in the last couple of years.

We had some promising results on the park, winning over fifty percent of our total games played. However come finals time we were below par. Just 2 wins from 8 matches. Seasons are judged by team photos on the wall...... we had none.

Player availability was at an all time low.148 players were used in total. Only 1 player in 3rd,5th,8th and 10th Grades played every Saturday of the season, the Captains.

If we are dinkum about future success this needs to change drastically. My suggestion to Joe and his Committee would be to drop a side for next season.

On a positive note, what made this job so rewarding was observing the seasons had by guys like Callum Pilcher, Simon Shub and Sujeevan Shanmuganthan. Their attitude, ethic, desire and performance should be the model for all at our great club.

Regards

Michael Kapiteyn. Chairman of Selectors

With the loss of over half the 2009-10 side, and with it many hundreds of games of experience, the 2010-11 season was always going to be a challenging year and one focused on rebuilding. The bowling stocks were hit particularly hard, with the retirement of Al Weir, departure of Tim McCormick, and absence of Joe Jeevaraj for the first few games.

The injection of youth included Chad’e Steenholdt, Callum Pilcher and Jarrad Gardner from Fremantle and imports Jak Martin from UK and Chandana ‘Pushy’ Pushpalal from Sri Lanka.

The season got underway with a One Dayer, thanks to the AFL GF replay. We played Bentley at Kent St and scored a thrilling win. Chasing 167, Bentley looked to be cruising before we took their last 7 for 20 runs, to win by 4 runs. The standout performance was Jarrad Gardner with 43 and 3/21 off 6.

This was followed by a string of losses to Swan Valley, Western Suburbs, High Wycombe and Subi-Marist. In all games except the Swan Valley game, we were in good positions at various stages throughout the match, but were unable to ram home the advantage at key stages of the games. Highlights throughout that period including fifties to Jak Martin and Chris Teede v Western Suburbs, 90no on debut to Pushy at High Wycombe and Callum Pilcher’s bowling performances over all four games, most notably a 5/79 v Western Suburbs.

Our first ‘must-win’ game of the year, came up against bottom of the ladder Bedford Morley at RA Cook Reserve in Round 6. Fifties from Pushy and Gardy helped us to a quick fire 221 off 55 overs. We then had Bedford-Morley 6/123 before a partnership threatened to take the game away from us. We rallied however, bowling them out for 200 and in the process scoring our second win for the year. Best bowler was Dave Scheffer, with 3/21 off 18 overs.

This was followed by a run of 3 losses to Wembley, Balcatta and Swanbourne. Again, we were more than competitive in all matches, but unable to convert into wins. Individual performances of note over that period were 4/62 from Pilch v Wembley, half centuries to Jak in both the Wembley and Balcatta games, and 59 from Chad’e v Swanbourne.

Round 10 saw us travel to Whitfords, who had previously only been beaten once during the season. Our total of 254 was our best of the year, and it was no surprise that it was also the first time we batted out 80 overs for the season. The highlight was a ton from Pushy, with another 50 from Jak in support. We then followed up with our best bowling effort of the season, restricting Whitfords to 176 all out. Joe Jeevaraj bowled a great opening spell of 2/41 off 13, and Pilch also grabbed 4, but the star of the day was undoubtedly Ramon Fletcher. In a stifling day, Farbs bowled 23 overs straight to end up with the figures of 23-8-53-4.

We went into the last game against Doubleview-Carine knowing that we were still in the mix for relegation. We batted first and, led by 85 from Pilch, scored 228. A competitive total, but as was the story of the season, 30 or 40 runs short of what we would have liked. The match hung in the balance for much of the second week, but Doubleview-Carine passed our score 5 down with around 5 overs remaining. They ended up 8/236 and we would not know the value of the 3 late wickets we took until the final sums were done.

With Subi-Marist winning well, the relegation result was going to be tight, but we survived by 0.0032%. Or to put it into perspective, one wicket or 11 runs over the whole season. Overall, it was a tough year, winning just 3 games. However, the team’s morale remained high and it was an enjoyable season. The win-loss ratio perhaps did not do us justice as we were competitive in most games, and with a year’s experience under the belt of some of the younger members, plus some good recruiting over the winter, I have no doubt that we will climb back up the ladder in 2011-12.

It was a privilege to captain the 2nd eleven this year,

One of my goals for the year was to have a team that could find some real enjoyment from the days when we were fielding. I wanted us all to come off of the ground knowing that they gave their all and had fun doing so (win or lose)...and I am happy to say that we achieved that goal.

We had a good season finishing on top of the ladder with 8 wins, 2 losses and a draw. Unfortunately , we did not play to our potential and lost the semi final.

It was a very enjoyable season with some great performances, especially 2 run chases earlier in the year 286 runs against Swan Valley and Subiaco Marist 232 runs, also rolling the Western Suburbs for 98 runs.

Thank you to all the guys who played this year for their support in making it all so much fun.

I would like to thank 2 people in particular , the chairman of selectors Michael Kapiteyn for his great support and hard work, and Val Steenholdt for looking after the nets at training and the pitch at Kent Street.

Cheers

Peter Jordan.

WASTCA Grade Winners

The 2010/11 season started with an indication of what the season would bring. A motley collection of guys epitomized the breadth of characters that would take to the field for the Thirsty Thirds, with a first-up win over Ocean Ridge.

1 win became 2, then 3, 4, 5 and 6 in a row to go to the Christmas break at the top of the ladder, having built in confidence across all areas. Chasing down a competitive Bentley to post 7/283 and setting our highest total of 7/355 against Bedford Morley, was matched by an ongoing ability to bowl sides out relatively cheaply.

The new year saw the 7th win in a row, but then the wheels slipped a bit. Poor losses to by this stage the lowly placed teams of Balcatta and Swanbourne, started exposing a brittleness to the batting.

The lowest score for us of 87 against Swanbourne was definitely a watershed moment. From being 2 games clear at the top of the ladder, we had suddenly slipped to second spot behind Whitfords and with a slim danger of not making finals with 2 hard games to go.

The round 10 top of the table clash with Whitfords was a hard-fought roller-coaster against our traditional rivals and fitting that this was to be our most memorable win, putting us back on top and a guaranteed semi-final berth.

The last qualifying game against finals contender Doubleview-Carine ended with a good win, but also highlighted the growing problem with our top-order. From dominating the batting, to just getting through had become a staple result. Unfortunately, the turnaround of form we had all expected from our top order to end the season did not eventuate.

The semi-final loss to Balcatta will remain a scar on our hearts for many years to come. Even with an atrocious batting display, we fell tantalizingly short of snatching victory, but failed to deliver. The memories of the 39 guys that took to the field with this team during the year deserved better. The nurtured spirit of the Thirsty Thirds deserved better. The ACC deserved better.

Runners Up Won Promotion to 7th Grade

The 2010/11 season was my first as captain, and it couldn’t have started any better. We won our first two games, and remained undefeated until the final round before Christmas, to sit quite comfortably at the head of the ladder.

However the next six rounds produced just the single win, to send us back into the pack. Fortunately we finished strongly, to win the final two fixtures to see us finish second on both the one day ladder and main season ladder. Our overall record including finals was 9 wins, 2 ties and 6 losses.

The one day final, put us up against Tuart Hill at Grenville Reserve. Having picked a very strong 8th grade side, I was confident we would put in an extremely good showing. I won the toss and chose to have a bat. Unfortunately it didn’t pay off, as the top and middle order both failed, to leave us reeling at 9-80. Only a very gutsy unbeaten 42 run last wicket stand between Dean Phillips and Andrew Cunningham gave us any chance of victory. In reply Tuart Hill batted well, with some good fortune to win easily by 5 wickets.

In the two day final, we again played Tuart Hill at Beach Reserve in Carine. I won the toss and elected to bat. This time around we got off to a reasonable start and at 1-69 we were looking good to post a total above 200. Unfortunately we weren’t able to capitalise and were bowled out for 151 in the 69th over, with only Steve Coyle passing 30. In reply, they got off to an excellent start through some big hitting from man of the match Craig Alderson. They passed our score comfortably with 7 wickets in hand.

The season contained many notable individual performances, highlighted by Jack Barendse’s first ever ton (106) against Tuart Hill. He also took 4-30 off 19 over’s in the same fixture. Nick Noel’s 5-23 from 29.4 over’s against Western Suburbs was the bowling highlight of the year, closely followed by Al Weir’s 5-39 from 26 over’s in the Semi Final against Melville. There was another fine all-round performance by Gareth Foulkes, who came in at 4-19 against Western Suburbs and made a chanceless 85, and in the same match took 5-66. The most important innings and feel good moment of the season was Dick Manning’s 75 in the Semi Final to see the team home from a perilous 3-5 chasing 152 for victory. Dick received a standing ovation of the like seldom seen at Shirley Strickland Reserve.

Dick Manning led the run scoring and batting averages with 348 runs at 24.9 and was also the best all-round cricketer with 14 wickets at 12.5. Dean Phillips bowled very consistently to lead the wicket takers with 27 wickets at 14.15 for the season. Dean also won the Association with 22 wickets at 11.36. The best of the fielders was Andrew Cunningham with 10 catches and a run out, including some very tough outfield catches.

Overall the 4th XI enjoyed a good season, culminating in two Grand Final appearances. Unfortunately we lost both, but the season was still an enjoyable one, with many close hard fought games of cricket, in what was a very even competition.

Regards Tristram Fletcher.

• In the semi final, ACC was chasing 152 against an experienced Melville team to win the final. The run chase got off to a poor start with ACC being 3 for 5 in the first 30 minutes. Richard “ Dick “ Manning batting at number 3, occupied the crease for 4 hours to finish on 75, getting out when the scores were tied. Dick at the ripe age of 59 was simply magnificent and the standing ovation he received from the building crowd demonstrated what a wonderful innings this was.

• Jack Barendse bowled 19 over's including 8 maidens to take 4 for 30 against top of the table Tuart Hill. Chasing 138 for victory, the ACC was 4 for 57 when Jack came into bat, he went onto score a magnificent 106 to win the game.

• Western Suburbs scored 168, Nick Noel bowled 29.4 over's straight to finish with the figures of 5 for 23 to bowl them out for 119.

• ACC was 5 for 27 when Gareth Foulkes batting at number 6 scored a wonderful 85 to be the 2nd last man out with the team scoring 168. Gareth then came on to bowl in the 17th over with Western Suburbs cruising at 1 for 55, Gareth bowled 22 over's taking 5 for 66 to bowl them out for 119

2009/10 this side was the most successful in the club with a GF loss to Wembley Districts (I should have bowled first) to this season where we had become one of the least successful failing to reach the finals in either the one or two day formats.

I have been captaining this side since the 08/09 season and there is some common challenges that seem to befall the IV and the V elevens principally the lack of team continuity this year was the worst with 43 players (41 09/10 and 33 08/09). This made it almost impossible to do the basic things like organize fine sessions – but more importantly to build any sort of team spirit or ethos. It is not the intention to this report to ascribe blame – however it should be understood by the broader club a reduction in this phenomenon of 40 + players passing through a side is seriously detrimental to the club’s future both on and off the paddock.

A season wouldn’t be complete without the odd brush with the association- which this side always comes off second best. Fixture 1 vs. Melville at Winthrop was a one day game we batted first with 8/303 from 40 overs (Steinberg, G. 63 and Campbell, M. 61) – this big score was also assisted by the fact that they bowled 45 wides and 3 no balls – this pushed out the change over times and consequently the game had to be called off at 6.20 due to failing light. Some how the association saw fit to call the match a draw through no fault of ours. At the other end of the season fixture 13 a two day game against Fremantle Mosman Park were bowled out twice by us ( the second innings for just 13) although they had a requisite number of players to avoid a forfeit – for health reasons one of their players could not bat but was present at the field. Again the Association found against us declaring the outcome a first innings victory but no outright. Finally Robyn Lynch is as we all know the association secretary and is a regular fixture with Tuart Hill an agreeable soul – however I saw that his life skills lay in areas other than umpiring and suggested that he leave the field.

Despite all the challenges that confronted the team there was one man that kept us competitive through the season, Gavin Steinberg. Gavin had a fantastic time this year especially with the bat 468 runs averaging 52 with a top score of 93. Glen Wright was the surprise packet with the bat this year I have never seen him bat better 122@ 17.43 but like all great cricketers one aspect of your game picks up and the other falls away. He managed to get the team bowling aggregate with 14 wickets but he has had better seasons with the ball.

Overall our results were mixed – we defeated the association champions Western Suburbs both in the one day and two day formats. We scored 4/318 against Melville – which am sure would be in the Club’s to 15 batting performances and as I mentioned earlier we rolled Freo Mosman Park for 13 an all time low for dismissing an opposition. We lost some close games – one against Ocean ridge was memorable due to the other blight of lower grade cricket self umpiring. Overall we can look at all sorts of reasons for a non successful season but at the end of the day we lost more games than we won – pretty simple really and as such it is the responsibility of the team an it’s core members to be accountable.

One of the positive aspects of the numbers pressures that we were exposed to through the year was the fact that Gavin Steinberg (our one day captain) and I were forced to be very proactive with recruitment. Paul Breman was the coach of the Ardross u.15 team and debuted with a the seasons best figures of 5/45 against Curtain Vic Park he brought down his son Jake who broke an important partnership against Melville on a wet day a great prospect for the future. Paul in tern Brought down Trevor Blackburn a retired roo shooter from Esperence – who brought a lot to the team with his bowling and batting but his skills as a fines mas- ter were second to none. Gavin brought down his mate Steve Vicary who bowled well but dropped a catch against Curtain Vic park that shattered the ring finger on his right hand – it looked like a burst sausage on the barbi- which ended his season early. Steve in turn persuaded his brother –in –law Ivan Osbourne, who

Page 18 in past lives amongst other things played state u.17 cricket- Ivan debuted against Melville and score a very solid(ish ) 116.

Overall I see great hope for the future of the team if we can maintain the core of players that we assembled toward the end of the season and I am still keen to captain if the club and the Association will have me . Finally in the winter the club as a whole has to seriously revisit selection policy in an effort to redress the situation that we found ourselves in this year.

Regards Andrew Sproul.

The one day competition has turned into a very competitive league, and one which is hard fought. We still had a chance of playing finals cricket with two games remaining and unfortunately did not make it. With 8 wins and 10 losses throughout the year, we beat only two of the top four teams throughout the year, but we managed to thrash the premiers and probably the best team all year, Melville, on the two occasions we played them.

There were many excellent individual performances over the season, and many performers. We had 37 players come through the squad, and I thank all of the boys who played over the season and helped out and contributed to make the ACC one day team a great team to play in. Special mentions go to:

1. Father/son combinations, in which the sons all shone and hopefully will become longstanding contributors to the ACC in future years. Jamie Stackpole and Jack Rudrum were great con- tributors on and off the field. The Ferris brothers also played an official match with their sons and were very humbled for the experience, they were also humbled by their sons superior abili- ties. 2. Our opening bowlers Rob Wilton and Bruce Calder worked together very well this season and always troubled the opposition. Brucey was unlucky not to get a lot more wickets as he relied on people taking catches to get his scalps. Might need to take the pace off if we’re a chance of shelling any Bruce, but 13 wickets is still a great haul. Wilts again played an all round role and is integral to the successes we have in this grade. He had another fantastic year with over three hundred runs and 13 wickets at an average of 19.15, well deserving the Bowling Average and Batting Aggregate trophies. 3. Our change bowlers mainly being Burt Baetsen, Leigh Wardell-Johnson, Bruce Rudrum and Doug Stirling all played important support roles. Our bowling was our strength this year and we worked in tandem very well providing excellent end-to-end support to each other. Burtie bowled cleverly once again, a bowler we have missed over the years as his role of President took him away from playing. This season he claimed 19 wickets for an average of 20.42: an enter- taining and potent bowler, easily winning our Bowling Aggregate trophy, highlighting an ex- cellent year with the ball. Rudders played half a season with us and had immediate impact with his restrictive and accurate bowling, falling just short of qualifying for the Bowling Aver- age trophy, but contributed well for the team. 4. Leroy and Stirlo both put in significant all round performances, both were in several batting partnerships and both were well amongst the wicket takers this season. They were two of our most consistent players, and had a fine season. Leroy has been awarded with our Batting Aver- age trophy this year, highlighting a very consistent year with an average of 36.8 5. Wilts and Leroy amazingly both scored 98 against Western Suburbs in two different matches, to post the highest score made by any of our blokes this season. Good effort fellas, unlucky not to get your tons, but definitely the highlights for our year. 6. Rich Campbell, our Fairest and Best player for the season – an award well-deserved and one in which his team mates have enjoyed seeing him achieve this season. Rich did an outstanding job behind the stumps taking 15 catches and 3 stumpings, but it was his efforts with the bat which were the highlight. He was forced to play a major role in our batting this year in the middle order, as our top order failed to deliver on many occasions. He was involved in many partner- ships, sometimes steering us to good wins, finishing with 244 runs to his name. His presence on- field is always felt as his constant support to all players is unyielding.

Thanks to all players for their efforts in getting us on the field each week, and to the fill in captains we have had throughout the season. Rhys Jenkins was ruled out of playing early in the season, but came down where possible and umpired for us, relieving us from extra pressure on match day. Thanks Rhys. Special thanks to Kappo for his assistance and making sure we never played short, and to our small mob of specta- tors who come down for a laugh on occasion and provide some support; it has been a fun season as usual.

• Dean Phillips – took 4/26 and snared four catches. He helped to restrict Fremantle Mosman Park to 142 runs. A great personal effort already achieved in the field. His job wasn’t finished yet as he had to go in at 7/121 and ensured we got over the line to win the match in thrashing a quick fire 17 not out.

• Leigh Wardell Johnson initiated his brand new bat against our old foe Western Suburbs, who we hadn’t beaten since 2006 and facing many a shellacking from them. Leroy came in at 6/69 and we were looking in trouble. He absolutely smashed an unbeaten 98, requiring 4 off the last ball of the innings to get his ton, unfortunately not able to get a boundary away to honour his efforts. He hit 5 fours, and 9 sixes to steer us to 216 off our 35 overs. Leigh also bowled miserly and took a catch, an outstanding individual effort to help beat a very formidable team.

Matt Campbell played his 200th game for the club as captain of the one day team winning against Wembley Districts.

The one day division 3 side started the season with the usual challenge, too old, too slow, no talent and not enough uninjured starters. On the positive side by the end of round 2 we had won more games than the entire 2009/2010 season. So things were looking up, that was until we came across Tuart Hill in round Three and hit the season low point – all out for 29! We did however manage to bounce back strongly and defeated High Wycombe the following week who at that point were the undefeated competition leaders. That roller coaster ride pretty much sums up the first half of the season. We had some great performances and some very inconsistent performances, all of which pointed to the fact that it was difficult to constantly get a stable side on the park and that we were generally suffering in the bowling ranks. To the sides credit we finished the first half of the season with a 50/50 record and were there and about for the top four. A lot of credit has to go to Steve Wilson who filled the opening bowling partnership ranks gallantly when called up in the first half of the year and Mickey Maher, who continued to bowl his bamboozling “Donkey drops” with the usual venom.

The start of the new year bought with it a few new recruits with an extension to our Southern African con- nection with Brett Klumper and Greg Manning joining us to bolster the keeping an quick bowling ranks. In addition Stef Vucens migrated back from Port Hedland and big Stu’s work roster freed up his availability somewhat as well as Russ Brownley have an extended stint back home from the mines. Addi- tionally the other half of our opening bowling duo Troy Sutherland had recovered from his dodgy hamstring injuries to get back on the park and develop and formidable bowling partnership with Greg.

The addition of the new blood (apart from lowering the average age of the team by about 10 years) proved to be just the tonic we needed to spur us all on to better things. We came home with a full head of steam finishing up with a 10 win, 1 draw and 7 loss record firmly wedging us in 4th place. Along with the ride into the finals came some pretty amusing moments, most of which were generally centered on Greg Manning’s odd bout of white line fever (which for those of us who got to know Greg this year is the complete opposite of his character and personality). The best of these was the second last game of the season against Nollamara when Greg finally managed to nail the 15 year old middle order batsman who had hung around way to long and had dared hit him down the ground for four. Greg’s response was to pin him with a bouncer, toppling his stumps and sending the batsman to the pavilion in tears. From my recollection of the after match review (fueled by a few beers) the batsman’s age had dropped to about 10 and Greg had earned a new nickname…… Unfortunately we managed to lose that game against Nollamara from an un-losable position, which put us under the pump for the last home and away game of the year, against the second placed side Tuart Hill at the same ground where we had experienced our worst defeat. We had our own destiny in our hands, win the game and we were in the finals. To the teams credit we did and did it well. It was a solid bowling performance, restricting Tuart Hill to 7 for 164, which was magnificently chased down via a 150 run 3rd wicket stand between Stef Vucens and Stu Kaschula that saw us reach the target with 2 overs to spare.

We headed into the first semi against Vic Park Curtin full of confidence, but unfortunately couldn’t sustain the momentum and let ourselves down with the bat, eking out a miserly 70. We didn’t however go down without a fight and managed to claim 4 wickets and cause some amount of bruising to the Vic Park Curtin batting line up before they got across the line. So that was the season, one where we surprised ourselves to some extent in finishing strong to make the finals but let ourselves down in not taking it further (especially when we had beaten all three other teams in the finals over the course of the season). From my perspective it was a privilege to captain such a great team of guys, who really do enjoy the game and don’t take it too seriously. No doubt the stand out for us over the season was big Stu Kaschula who always put in with both the bat and ball. Thanks to the entire playing group who made it such a great season and to the Applecross Cricket Club for allowing us to be part of such a great set up. Oh and I can’t forget to mention Murray (Muzza) Sutherland our best clubman for his continued support at square leg, running the BBQ after the game and generally talking us up at the club. WASTCA Grand Finalists

Applecross Colts managed to get a team for the summer of 2010/2011. Every week we struggle to get enough numbers to fill a team. The colts went through 3 captains (Chad'e Steenholdt, Callum Pilcher and Scott Jackson) during the season didn’t make it easy. But the boys knew enough mates that can hold a bat and they filled in and also many thanks for Capo for organising the team. We had a great season but a disappointing end losing to Ocean Ridge in the Grand Final. We had no out- standing performance during the year. Every player did their job, if that was Sean Adam getting quick wickets or Binuk Kodituwakku telling jokes to make the team morale high. Everyone knew what they had to do and did it at the best of their ability. Round 1 vs Whitfords. The Boys were pumped for the first game of the year and against the club old rival. They were a punch of doodaa and didn’t like getting beaten. Scott Jackson and Chad'e Steenholdt both made 50, with the two left arm slow spinners taking 2 wickets each Callum Pilcher and Elijah Turriff-Smith. ACC 8/191 (Jackson 54, Steenholdt 53) def Whitfords 8/173 (Pilcher 2-19 Turriff-Smith 2-48) Votes 3: Jackson 2: Steenholdt 1: Pilcher Round 2 vs Ocean Ridge. Callum Pilcher led the side for this game after Chad'e did his knee the week before but still played and popped it out of place again. This game was an embarrassment to ACC after losing by 80 runs. The star was Callum with 51 with the team falling around him. We also found a new quick bowler name Sean Adam who was known for been a top order batsman. Sean took 2-41 Ocean Ridge 7/223 (Adam 2-41)def ACC 142 all out (Pilcher 51) Votes 3: Pilcher 2: Adam 1: Foulkes Round 3 vs Doubleview-Carine This game saw a change of captain with Scott Jackson taking the role with Chad'e and Callum unable to play. This was a great game with Applecross winning by 3 runs and taking 8 for 44 to come back and de- feated Doubleview. The brothers dominated this game with Gareth Ringrose scoring 39 and Simon Rin- grose 4-26. ACC 169 all out (Ringrose.G 39, Foulkes 31) def DC 166 all out (Ringrose.S 4-26, Turriff-Smith 2-17) Votes 3: Ringrose.S 2: Ringrose.G 1: Turriff-Smith Round 4 vs Beford-Morley We a full strength team and Chad'e Steenholdt back as captain to get a must win game to make the finals. The boys did that with Sean Adam being the star and getting the team over by 3 wickets. BF 8/163 (Adam 3-30, Pilcher 3-40) def by ACC 7/167 (Ringrose.G 39, Steenholdt 28) Votes 3: Adam, 2: Pilcher 1: Ringrose Semi Final vs Balcatta Against a very arrogant Balcatta who we dominated by 9 wickets was a great victory and to put us into the final. Bowled them out for 96 with Cunningham been the pick of the bowlers 3-14. Then Foulkes and Ince lead the team to victory with both scoring 40+ not out. Balcatta 96 (Cunningham 3-14, Adam 2-12)def by ACC 1-97 (Ince 45* Foulkes 40*) Votes 3: Ince, 2: Foulkes 1: Cunningham Grand Final vs Ocean Ridge The team was out to prove themselves after their last display against Ocean Ridge. The boys did a very good performance but the pressure of finals got to them. Only chasing 151 the boys failed to bat in partnerships and get some yellow fluff for the club Ocean Ridge 9/151 (Adam 3-38, Kodituwakku 2-19)def ACC 143 (Steenholdt 67, Ince 22) Votes 3: Steenholdt 2: Adam 1: Kodituwakku

A very entertaining season with a lot of memoires which I can imagine been talked about at the bar in the future. Well done to Sean Adam winning the fairest and best with Callum Pilcher runner up. Well done to Scotty Jackson winning the fielding award.

Page 25 100 GAMERS V PRESIDENTS XI REPORT

Played : 12 , 100 Gamers : Presidents XI : Draws :

The annual 100 Gamers v Presidents 11 games took place at Shirley Strickland Reserve on 6 March 2011. I captained the 100 Gamers and Allan Utterson captained the Presidents 11.

The day got off to an inauspicious start as we arrived at the ground to find a game being played by local juniors. Having legitimately obtained our permit from Melville City Council which became very useful, and after some argy-bargy the juniors were relegated to continue their game at Karoonda Reserve so that we could play our far more important fixture. I won the toss and elected to bowl.

The game got off to a start of high quality cricket and, for the most part, the standard of the game was excellent. Jack and Elton Barendse had a fantastic opening partnership of 103 runs, withstanding all that Brad Weir and Robbie Wilton could throw at them in the early overs. After Elton’s demise, LBW to Steph Perer (who would have been lucky to walk for 2 weeks after the game), festival day specialist, Steve Coyle strode to the wicket. Elton made a 38. The festival match specialist scored a fine 50 and as the scorebook adequately described, “retired awesome”. Jack Barendse went on to make a well compiled 70 being out “Cheese”, bowled “Mouse”. We had played him into form as he scored his maiden century for the club the following week.

Cal Sauer, made a smashing 44 and after 40 overs the Presidents 11 had made a formidable total of 227. Pick of the bowlers were Brad Weir with 1 for 43 of 7 overs and Trevor “Mouse” Goddard with 1 for 21 of 3 overs.

The 100 Gamers innings got off to a fine start, losing our first wicket at 36 runs in the 8th over. From there wickets fell consistently until a 7th wicket partnership between yours truly and the formerly mentioned Steph Perer (50) who made a fine half-century to go with his one-fer. Unfortunately the skipper was bowled by Utterson who, contrary to the rules and spirit of the game, bowled an additional over. Unfortu- nately the 100 Gamers were bowled out for 216, a fine effort to chase a big score in those circumstances.

The match was umpired to an exceptional standard by Roger Weir and Michael Kapiteyn. Both Roger, who is a fine umpire, and once again devoted his time free-of-charge to this game, and Michael, who has great potential as an umpire and administrator, are to be thanked for their wonderful efforts.

Once again the game was played in great spirit in a festival-like atmosphere where children were seen enjoying the bouncy-castle and face-painting activities provided by the club. Everyone enjoyed a hearty barbecue at the end of the day and all in all it was a wonderful afternoon at the home of cricket.

All that remains is for the 100 Gamers to break their drought and actually win one of these games. 100 GAMERS DINNER

The club held its 14th annual 100 gamers dinner at the View restaurant in Mews road Fremantle on the 25th of January. 28 of the 51 hundred gamers attended the function organised by Chris Teede cap #37.

The 100 gamers inducted a new member this year with Alastair Field becoming the 51st 100 gamer of the Applecross cricket club.

Al debuted for the club in 1991/92 has taken 207 wickets with a best bowling performance of 8 for 12 against Victoria Park in 3rd grade our 2nd XI in 1996/97. He also has scored 1820 runs with personal best of 114 n.o. against Bedford Morley in the one day competition in 2001/02. Al or Cheese as we like to call him has also taken 33 catches.

All Members of the Applecross Cricket Club have to come face to face with a magnificent challenge. We all have the opportunity to contribute to the foundations of a great cricket club. But we will fail the challenge unless we all possess a common goal. To make the Applecross cricket club the best club in suburban turf .

We must never lose sight of this goal, even in times of defeat. Cricket is a game of “ups” and “downs” ,of success and failure. The person who isn't prepared to take disappointment and at times second place, on the chin, soon falls by the wayside .the sign of a good player is the way he comes back after a run of failure .Good players don’t fall easily by the wayside when difficult situations arise .
