Kerr, HBS & NBER Tina Xu, Wellesley College November 2017 Abstract: We review the extensive literature since 2000 on the personality traits of entrepreneurs. We first consider baseline personality traits like the Big-5 model, self-efficacy and innovativeness, locus of control, and the need for achievement. We then consider risk attitudes and goals and aspirations of entrepreneurs. Within each area, we separate studies by the type of entrepreneurial behavior considered: entry into entrepreneurship, performance outcomes, and exit from entrepreneurship. This literature shows common results and many points of disagreement, reflective of the heterogeneous nature of entrepreneurship. We label studies by the type of entrepreneurial population studied (e.g., Main Street vs. those backed by venture capital) to identify interesting and irreducible parts of this heterogeneity, while also identifying places where we anticipate future large-scale research and the growing depth of the field are likely to clarify matters.

  • Democratic Change in the Arab World, Past and Present
ERIC CHANEY Harvard University Democratic Change in the Arab World, Past and Present ABSTRACT Will the Arab Spring lead to long-lasting democratic change? To explore this question, I examine the determinants of the Arab world’s demo- cratic deficit in 2010. I find that the percentage of a country’s landmass that was conquered by Arab armies following the death of the prophet Muhammad statistically accounts for this deficit. Using history as a guide, I hypothesize that this pattern reflects the long-run influence of control structures developed under Islamic empires in the premodern era and find that the available evi- dence is consistent with this interpretation. I also investigate the determinants of the recent uprisings. Taken in unison, the results cast doubt on claims that the Arab-Israeli conflict or Arab culture or Muslim theology is a systematic obstacle to democratic change in the region and point instead to the legacy of the region’s historical institutional framework. ill the Arab Spring lead to long-lasting democratic change? With WIslamist parties and candidates performing well in elections across the Arab world, many observers have begun to predict that the recent upris- ings will usher in a wave of Islamist-dominated autocracies instead of the democratic institutions many protestors initially demanded. These observ- ers often point to the political trajectories of non-Arab, Muslim-majority states such as Iran and implicitly claim that Islamist-dominated states cannot be democratic. Others note that the emergence of democratic regimes in Indonesia and Turkey demonstrate that Islamists can play a con- structive role in democratic institutions.1 One challenge for those interested in forecasting the evolution of institu- tions in the Arab world is that there is little consensus regarding the factors that led to the region’s democratic deficit before the recent uprisings.

The paper analyzes the strategic rationale for this policy shift, the main elements of the new U.S. policy, regional responses to the new initiatives, and the prospects for U.S. policy toward the Asia-Pacific region. ORIGINS AND EVOLUTION OF THE REBALANCE Beginning in the fall of 2011, the Obama administration has issued a series of announcements and taken a series of steps to expand and intensify the already significant role of the United States in the Asia-Pacific region. Explicitly identifying the Asia-Pacific region as a geostrategic priority for the United States, the Obama administration is paying a higher level of attention to the region across a wide range of issue areas. This represents a significant shift in U.S. policy. However, the story of the rebalance is not a story of U.S.

missosology BEAUTYBEAUTY ++ B R AW N B R AWby N kirinaurduja pageant expert Once considered as a certain anomaly in the culture of beauty, male pageants nowadays are a regular spectacle akin to its female counterpart, where prime specimens of universal aesthetics of beauty are being primped and paraded for appraisal, gaining the nods of approval from the judges. Lately, there has been frenzy over the male physique and artistry resulting in the birth of male beauty pageants. And the interest is growing in a pace that one would not imagine 20 years ago. BEAUTY+B R AW N must admit, I seldom participate in the discussions related to male beauty pageants, but still, it has never fail to titillate my senses enough to distract me Ieven when I am at work. I grew up thinking that there is nothing beyond the twirling and twisting of the curvaceous bodies of the female beauty genre, but little did I know that the concept of beauty encompasses all age and gender. Armed with enough curiosity about this such not-so-novel phenomenon, I explored the net and delved for the answers to the question that has been occupying my mind all the while: what's the relevance of this to our modern society and its impact to the people's awareness, from simpering girls to shrieking flamboyant gay fans and even to the direct target of the contest, the heterosexual males. Like its female counterpart, male beauty pageants is not without its shady past of allegedly realizing each and every male homosexual dreams and that is the exhibition of prime specimens of male anatomy long- fantasized by the closeted and even openly gay males.

The Future of Chinese Fashion Introduction China overtook Japan as the world’s number two economy in the third quarter of 2010, and is expected to challenge US supremacy in the not-so-distant future. We are seeing titles such as When China Rules the World (Jacques 2009) heralding the next shift in the balance of world power. We can quibble about some of the details—when China will overtake the US, what will emerge as “The Post-Washington Consensus” (Birdsall & Fukuyama 2011), and “Will China’s Rise Lead to War?” (Glaser 2011)—but one thing is certain: China is now a major player in the world’s economy and the balance of power is shifting eastward.
