Narrative Description: The Grocers Wholesale Company Warehouse is located on the southwest corner of West Ninth and Cherry streets in the warehouse and factory district that borders the southwest portion of the downtown area. Figure 27 locates the building and the immediate neighborhood. Railroad tracks, reduced considerably in number, pass the building to the south. The Raccoon River flows eastwardly, a half mile to the south, and links with the Des Moines River just an equal distance to the east. Architecture of Downtown Des Moines: Some Highlights from the Twentieth Century and Beyond By Paula Mohr In its 170-some years, the evolution of Des Moines’ commercial core has paral- leled that of many American cities. Fort Des Moines, an early foothold in terms of Euro-American settlement, today survives only as an archaeological site. Early commercial buildings of wood frame on both the east and west sides of the Des Moines River were replaced with brick later in the nineteenth century. At the turn of the twentieth century another wave of development introduced tall buildings or skyscrapers. In the midst of all this change, we can see the impact of external forces, including architectural ideas from Chicago, the City Beautiful Movement and the contributions of nationally and internationally renowned architects. The “book” on Des Moines’ architecture is still being written. As a result of this constant renewal and rebuild- Youngerman Block (1876), also by Foster, features ing, only a handful of nineteenth century buildings a façade of “Abestine Stone,” a nineteenth-century survive in Des Moines’ downtown.     2017 Kansas Health Foundation Grant Report About the Center for Engagement and Community Development Kansas State University’s Center for Engagement and Community Development, or CECD, was created in 2006 with the mission to connect the resources and expertise of K-State to the significant issues of public need facing Kansans and communities worldwide. Our staff spent our first year traveling to meetings across Kansas, talking to citizen leaders, nonprofits, academics and governmental agencies. From those meetings, we generated a list of issues that we believed CECD and Kansas State University should address. First on the list of needs was finding ways to sustain rural food retail and improve rural healthy food access. This work is also integrally connected to the broader mission of Kansas State University. K-State’s agricultural heritage, food systems expertise and world-class research facilities have firmly established the university as a leader in addressing the growing technological, educational and human resource needs of the global food system. Building on this heritage, K-State launched the Global Food Systems Initiative in 2014, which is accelerating new research and teaching opportunities to enhance food production, food safety, human and animal health, and food security. Likewise, K-State Research and Extension, or KSRE, has identified its five grand challenges, one of which is global food systems. Under the umbrella of this grand challenge, KSRE is working to address food access, food security and strengthening global food systems. Since 2007, the Rural Grocery Initiative, or RGI, and rural food access have been a significant focus of CECD’s work.
