Botha Fall 2007 Issue of KINEMA THE HERITAGE OF FILM: PERSPECTIVE ON FLEMISH CINEMA AND FILM CUL- TURE THROUGH SOUTH AFRICAN EYES I assisted the Locarno Film festival in 2005 with a retrospective of short films by young South African directors. There I met a very talented, young Flemish director, whose film was by far the best in the one section.(1) It moved me immensely with its honest portrait of alienation and racial discrimination. We had a long discussion on film history, aesthetics and film cultures. We also talked about the historyof film in Belgium and it was noted that while the French speaking side of Belgian cinema had recently received international acclaim (for example, the work by the Dardenne Brothers), Flemish cinema was struggling. In fact, the young filmmaker made the statement that there was little to be excited about in the historyof Flemish cinema. He felt especially that the films about rural communities and most of the historical dramas were not saying much about contemporary Flanders, in particular, the youth. I have heard this argument before, but in a totally different cultural context. Many young, aspiring South African filmmakers have told me there is very little in South African film history which makes themproud of their film culture. For decades South African film culture has been in isolation. The years 1959to1980 were characterised by an artistic revival in filmmaking throughout the world, ranging from exciting political films in Africa and Latin America to examples of great art cinema in Europe and Asia. -

C’est vrai que j’ai travaillé dans des zones germanophones jusqu’à présent. Il existe un fossé entre la culture des régions de langue française et celles dans lesquelles on parle allemand – je remarque ça même en Suisse, entre Suisse-Allemands et Romands. On lit d’autres livres, on écoute d’autres musiques et souvent, on regarde d’autres films. J’ai depuis toujours ressenti ce besoin, ce moteur qui me pousse à créer quelque chose, un univers. À travers le cinéma, je peux comprendre la vie dans sa complexité, la penser ou la ressentir différemment, en faire une abstraction. J’ai grandi entre l’île de Samoa, dans le Pacifique, et les Alpes Suisses, bien loin d’un lieu où le cinéma était considéré comme une activité possible. Je n’avais aucune connaissance de ce monde, mais j’aimais voir des films. -

Boekhoudkundige balans 2019 Dit jaar staat meer bepaald in het teken van de consolidatie van de databases met professionals uit de audiovisuele sector en van de lancering van een platform om de aanvragen voor fondsen elektronisch te kunnen indienen. Dit jaar kenmerkt zich ook door de betaling van de subsidies in vele schijven (verkiezingsjaar). 1 screen.brussels fund vzw – Balans jaar 2019 1. Herhaling van de doelstellingen en taken 1.1. Context Op 2 mei 2016 lanceerde het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest zijn nieuwe strategie die moest zorgen voor een betere toegankelijkheid van het Brusselse audiovisuele aanbod voor alle Brusselse, Belgische en internationale betrokkenen. Deze strategie werd met name concreet door de oprichting van het overkoepelende merk screen.brussels. Dit bestaat uit 4 entiteiten: - screen.brussels film commission (het voormalige Brussels Film Office, onder leiding van visit.brussels) - screen.brussels cluster (de sectorale cluster, ondergebracht bij hub.brussels) - screen.brussels business (financiering van Brusselse audiovisuele bedrijven via finance.brussels) - screen.brussels fund (het Brusselse coproductiefonds) 1.2. The 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival runs from 29 November to 7 December 2019 12 BIG NAMES FROM WORLD CINEMA IN CONVERSATION WITH MARRAKECH AUDIENCES Rabat, 14 November 2019. The “Conversation with” section is one of the highlights of the Marrakech International Film Festival and returns during the 18th edition for some fascinating exchanges with some of those who create the magic of cinema around the world. As its name suggests, “Conversation with” is a forum for free-flowing discussion with some of the great names in international filmmaking. These sessions are free and open to all: industry professionals, journalists, and the general public. During last year’s festival, the launch of this new section was a huge hit with Moroccan and internatiojnal film lovers. More than 3,000 people attended seven conversations with some legendary names of the big screen, offering some intense moments with artists, who generously shared their vision and their cinematic techniques and delivered some dazzling demonstrations and fascinating anecdotes to an audience of cinephiles. After the success of the previous edition, the Festival is recreating the experience and expanding from seven to 11 conversations at this year’s event. Once again, some of the biggest names in international filmmaking have confirmed their participation at this major FIFM event. They include US director, actor, producer, and all-around legend Robert Redford, along with Academy Award-winning French actor Marion Cotillard. CAST PASCALE FERRAN After graduating from IDHEC (former FEMIS) where she pursued cinema studies from 1980 to 1983, Pascale Ferran worked as an assistant in television and as a co-writer for Pierre Trividic, Arnaud Desplechin, Jean-Pierre Limosin and Philippe Venault. She directed six short films from 1979 to 1990, notably LE BAISER [The Kiss], which received awards in several international festivals. She directed her first feature film PETITS ARRANGEMENTS AVEC LES MORTS (Coming to Terms with the Dead) in 1993. The film, won the Caméra d’Or at Cannes Film Festival. Her second feature, L’ÂGE DES POSSIBLES (1996, The Age of Possibilities) received the FIPRESCI award at Venice Film festival.
