In Pichón, the word in his country that is more negative than the N word in the United States, and the name he was called by his fellow citizens, Carlos Moore reveals himself as a human being who is better than the world that rejected him, and stronger than the world that wanted to see him dead, any way possible. Moore has written an astounding book about revolution, resistance, passion, and compassion. The plot could have been set in Ireland, in China, in Mississippi, or in Algeria. It is an irresistibly human tale. The National Memorial African Bookstore, headquarters of Harlem’s black nationalists during the 1960s, where Carlos Moore had his fateful encounter with Maya Angelou. ix Acknowledgments This book has been in the making since 1982, when my friend Alex Haley convinced me I should write it. He oversaw its slow progress until his sudden death in 1992; thereafter, the manuscript stood in limbo for years. Two defining events committed me irrevocably to finishing it: a near-fatal accident in 1996 while living and working in Trinidad and Tobago and, the next year, the lifting of the official ban on my reenter- ing Cuba by the Castro regime. But the manuscript came to fruition only because Shawna M. Davis, Ayeola Moore, Marcia Lord, Rex Nettleford, Iva Carruthers, Patricia Valdés, Micheline Lombard, and Francine Cor- nely recommitted me to it every time I cast it aside. Over the years, many were involved in helping me arrive at the most effective, truthful way to present my story: Shawna M. At fifteen, I had my first break in life: my Jamaican father took me out of my native Cuba. When the magical day came for us to leave, I could have died of happiness. That day in May 1958, at the Havana airport, my heart pumped wildly as I, my father, and two of my five siblings readied to board our flight to America. I had been nowhere near an airplane before, let alone inside one. America represented everything that I, a poor black boy, could not even dream of having in my own country. For me, “America” rhymed with good government, good schools, well-paying jobs, affluence, unlim- ited opportunities. It symbolized not just power and money but a place where I would finally be treated decently. I yearned for the life that American films and glossy fashion magazines promised.

As an African American, Angelou experienced firsthand racial prejudices and discrimination in Arkansas. She also suffered at the hands of a family associate around the age of 7: During a visit with her mother, Angelou was raped by her mother's boyfriend. Then, as vengeance for the sexual assault, Angelou's uncles killed the boyfriend. So traumatized by the experience, Angelou stopped talking.

The performance was held at the Sting Festival an annual reggae event that dates back some twenty years. Considered the world’s largest one day reggae festival, the event annually boasts an electric atmosphere full of star studded lineups and throngs of hardcore fans. The concert is also notorious for the aggressive DJ clashes1 and violent incidents that occur. The event was Gentleman’s debut performance before a Jamaican audience. Considered a relatively new artist, Gentleman was not the headlining act and was slotted to perform after a number of familiar artists who had already “hyped” the audience with popular dancehall2 reggae hits. When his turn came he performed a classical roots 3reggae song “Dem Gone” from his 2002 Journey to Jah album. Unhappy with his performance the crowd booed and jeered at him. He did not respond to the heckling and continued performing despite the audience vocal objections. Empty beer bottles and trash were thrown onstage. Finally, unable to withstand the wrath and hostility of the audience he left the stage.

    About the Centro Film Collection The Centro Library and Archives houses one of the most extensive collections of films documenting the Puerto Rican experience. The collection includes documentaries, public service news programs; Hollywood produced feature films, as well as cinema films produced by the film industry in Puerto Rico. Presently we house over 500 titles, both in DVD and VHS format. Films from the collection may be borrowed, and are available for teaching, study, as well as for entertainment purposes with due consideration for copyright and intellectual property laws. Film Lending Policy Our policy requires that films be picked-up at our facility, we do not mail out. Films maybe borrowed by college professors, as well as public school teachers for classroom presentations during the school year. We also lend to student clubs and community-based organizations.     ch4.qxd 10/11/1999 10:10 AM Page 84 CHAPTER 4 The 1970s: Pluralization, Radicalization, and Homeland As hopes of returning to Cuba faded, Cuban exiles became more con- cerned with life in the United States. Exile-related struggles were put on the back burner as more immediate immigrant issues emerged, such as the search for better jobs, education, and housing. Class divisions sharpened, and advocacy groups seeking improved social services emerged, including, for example, the Cuban National Planning Council, a group of Miami social workers and businesspeople formed in the early 1970s. As an orga- nization that provided services to needy exiles, this group de‹ed the pre- vailing notion that all exiles had made it in the United States. Life in the United States created new needs and interests that could only be resolved, at least in part, by entering the domestic political arena. Although there had always been ideological diversity within the Cuban émigré community, it was not until the 1970s that the political spec- trum ‹nally began to re›ect this outwardly.1 Two sharply divided camps emerged: exile oriented (focused on overthrowing the Cuban revolution- ary government) and immigrant oriented (focused on improving life in the United States). Those groups that were not preoccupied with the Cuban revolution met with hostility from those that were. Exile leaders felt threat- ened by organized activities that could be interpreted as an abandonment of the exile cause. For example, in 1974 a group of Cuban exile researchers conducted an extensive needs assessment of Cubans in the United States and concluded that particular sectors, such as the elderly and newly arrived immigrants, were in need of special intervention.2 When their ‹ndings were publicized, they were accused of betraying the community because of their concern with immigrant problems rather than the over- throw of the revolution.

    Verge 5 Blatter 1 Chant Down Babylon: the Rastafarian Movement and Its Theodicy for the Suffering Emily Blatter The Rastafarian movement was born out of the Jamaican ghettos, where the descendents of slaves have continued to suffer from concentrated poverty, high unemployment, violent crime, and scarce opportunities for upward mobility. From its conception, the Rastafarian faith has provided hope to the disenfranchised, strengthening displaced Africans with the promise that Jah Rastafari is watching over them and that they will someday find relief in the promised land of Africa. In The Sacred Canopy , Peter Berger offers a sociological perspective on religion. Berger defines theodicy as an explanation for evil through religious legitimations and a way to maintain society by providing explanations for prevailing social inequalities. Berger explains that there exist both theodicies of happiness and theodicies of suffering. Certainly, the Rastafarian faith has provided a theodicy of suffering, providing followers with religious meaning in social inequality. Yet the Rastafarian faith challenges Berger’s notion of theodicy. Berger argues that theodicy is a form of society maintenance because it allows people to justify the existence of social evils rather than working to end them. The Rastafarian theodicy of suffering is unique in that it defies mainstream society; indeed, sociologist Charles Reavis Price labels the movement antisystemic, meaning that it confronts certain aspects of mainstream society and that it poses an alternative vision for society (9). The Rastas believe that the white man has constructed and legitimated a society that is oppressive to the black man. They call this society Babylon, and Rastas make every attempt to defy Babylon by refusing to live by the oppressors’ rules; hence, they wear their hair in dreads, smoke marijuana, and adhere to Marcus Garvey’s Ethiopianism.

    Abdias Nascimento e o surgimento de um pan-africanismo contemporâneo global Moore, Carlos Wedderburn Meu primeiro encontro com Abdias do Nascimento, amigo e companheiro intelectual há quatro décadas, aconteceu em Havana, em 1961, quando a revolução cubana ainda não havia completado três anos de existência. Eu tinha 19 anos, Abdias, 47. Para mim, esse encontro significou o descobrimento do mundo negro da América Latina. Para ele, essa visita a Cuba abria uma interrogação quanto aos métodos que se deveriam empregar para vencer quatro séculos de racismo surgido da escravidão. E se me atrevo a prefaciar este primeiro volume de suas Obras, é apenas porque no tempo dessa nossa longa e intensa amizade forjou-se uma parceria política na qual invariavelmente participamos de ações conjuntas no Caribe, na América do Norte e no Continente Africano. As duas obras aqui apresentadas tratam de eventos acontecidos no período de seu exílio político (1968-1981) e dos quais fui testemunha. É, portanto, a partir dessa posição de amigo, de companheiro intelectual e de testemunha que prefacio este volume, sabendo que deste modo assumo uma pesada responsabilidade crítica tanto para com os meus contemporâneos quanto em relação às gerações vindouras. Duas obras compõem este volume. O traço que as une é o fato de os acontecimentos narrados com precisão de jornalista em Sitiado em Lagos decorrerem diretamente das colocações políticas e da leitura sócio-histórica sobre a natureza da questão racial no Brasil que se encontram sintetizadas em O genocídio do negro brasileiro. Essas obras foram escritas da forma que caracteriza o discurso "nascimentista" - de modo direto, didático, e num tom forte, à maneira de um grito.
