This theme has several meanings. In particular, we will draw attention to the Gulf of Mexico–Caribbean, and the surrounding T American continents, bridging the knowledge gap that exists across a region divided by polit- ical boundaries and language but sharing a common geologic framework. Bridging the Gulf also addresses the need to develop a closer link between technology and the science of geology and to educate the public on issues critical to the development of intelligent policies on the environment and geologic hazards. We also hope to bridge the gulf between the past and the future with both a retrospection on the past 25 years of plate tectonics and a look at the future as geology responds to society’s needs. Finally, we view the city of New Orleans, the Mississippi River and its delta, and the Gulf Coast as a laboratory where the long- term effects of humans on the environment can be examined. NEW ORLEANS: The Crescent City–New Orleans is nestled on the inside of a south-looping meander of the Mississippi River. -

Major normal faults are shown between mainland Scotland and Shetland. Structural contours (green) are in kilome- ters below sea level for all known mantle reflectors north of Ireland, north of mainland Scotland, and west of Shetland (e.g., Figs. 2A and 5); contours (black) are in seconds (two-way traveltime) on the reflector I-I’ (Fig. 2B) pro- jecting up to the Iapetus suture (from Soper et al., 1992). To call Payne a friend of Film Streams would be an understatement. A found- ing board member and ardent supporter, it’s safe to say he’s a huge reason we’re here. His first repertory series at the Ruth Sokolof Theater – which was Le rayon vert 1986 Dersu Uzala 1975 the very first classic film program at the Theater – included works like SEVEN Walkabout 1971 Le amiche 1955 SAMURAI, 8 ½, THE LAST DETAIL, THE WILD BUNCH, and LA NOTTE. I findanzati 1963 High and Low 1963 He is best known as the writer-director of five feature films – CITIZEN RUTH, ELECTION, ABOUT SCHMIDT, SIDEWAYS, THE DESCENDANTS – and as L’avventura 1960 An Autumn director of the forthcoming NEBRASKA. Onibaba 1964 Afternoon 1962 Come and See 1985 Payne himself has said that one of the reasons he is able to create such moving Tokyo Story 1953 and artistically interesting films is because of his obsessive study of movies.
