Talinis – Twin Lakes Federation of People’s Organizations, Diputado Extension, Sibulan, Negros Oriental, Philippines Photo by: Juan Pablo Moreiras 2 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Large flying foxes in insular Southeast Asia are the most threatened of the Old World fruit bats due to deforestation, unregulated hunting, and little conservation commitment from local governments. Despite the fact they are globally endangered and play essential ecological roles in forest regeneration as seed dispersers and pollinators, there have been only a few studies on these bats that provide information useful to their conservation management. Our project aims to promote the conservation of large flying foxes in the Philippines by providing protected area managers with the training and the baseline information necessary to design and implement a long-term management plan for flying foxes. We focused our efforts on the globally endangered Philippine endemics, Acerodon jubatus and Acerodon leucotis, and the bats that commonly roost with them, Pteropus hypomelanus, P. vampyrus lanensis, and P. pumilus which are thought to be declining in the Philippines. Local participation is an integral part of our project. We conducted the first national training workshop on flying fox population counts and conservation at the Subic Bay area. -

This bat differs from the other members of this genus known from the island, Africa, and Asia based on its notably diminutive size, pelage coloration, and tragus shape and length. Scotophilus sp. nov. is known from seven different specimens taken at three different sites in the central western portion of the island, in zones with anthropogenic savanna dominated by palms (Bismarckia nobilis) and dry deciduous forest. The holotype was collected in the palm leaf roof of a thatched dwelling, which is the first evidence of the synanthropic occurrence of a member of this genus on Madagascar. Four species of Scotophilus are now known to occur on Madagascar of which three are endemic. Blood samples were taken from 5 male and 5 female bats, lym- phocytes were cultured at 37°C for 72 h in presence of colchicine, and metaphase spreads were per- formed on microscopic slides and air-dried. Conventional staining and GTG-banding techniques were applied to stain the chromosomes. The results showed that the diploid chromosome number of S. kuhlii was 2n=36, and the fundamental number (NF) was 52 in both male and female. The types of autosomes were 6 large metacentric, 4 large submetacentric, 6 large telocentric, 2 medium sub- metacentric, 10 medium telocentric, 2 small metacentric, and 4 small telocentric chromosomes. The X chromosome was a large submetacentric chromosome and the Y chromosome was the smallest ac- rocentric chromosome. The GTG-banding technique, indicated that the number of bands and locations in S. kuhlii was 167, and that each chromosome pair could be clearly differentiated. In addition, a pair of long arms near the centromere of chromosome pair 17 showed clearly observable nucleolar organizer regions (NORs). -

High androgen production by ovarian thecal interstitial cells: a mechanism for delayed ovulation in a tropical vespertilionid bat, Scotophilus heathi Abhilasha and A. Krishna Department of Zoology, Bañaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221 005, India The steroid hormone profile of Scotophilus heathi, an Indian tropical vespertilionid bat, was studied, with special reference to the period of delayed ovulation. The results show unusually high concentrations of circulating androstenedione and testosterone during the first half of the period of delayed ovulation, whereas the concentrations of progesterone and oestradiol were relatively low during this period. Androstenedione, testosterone and oestradiol concentrations were high during the period of ovarian recrudescence (October\p=n-\ November). The oestradiol concentration increased, whereas androstenedione and testos- terone declined significantly, before ovulation. Studies in vitro showed that the ovary secretes more androstenedione and testosterone than does the adrenal. A histological study showed that a major part of the ovary of S. heathi was occupied by hypertrophied interstitial cells. An immunocytochemical study showed ovarian thecal interstitial cells as the major site of high androgen synthesis in the ovary. Sri Lanka Mammal Tour: 19 February – 1 March, 2017 Mike Richardson [email protected] Sri Lanka has a lot to offer the mammal enthusiast and over the years I have read a number of reports from some very productive trips on mammalwatching.com. The majority of people have enjoyed considerable success using Bird and Wildlife Team, in particular a guide named Udithe Hettige. In February 2017, I embarked on my own eleven day trip, joined by Karen and Simon Spavin, and John Sadler. We had secured Udithe as our guide so our expectations were high. Indian Pangolin (Manis crassicaudata) – John Sadler Our trip was immensely successful and we recorded over 70 mammal species including most of our targets. Unlike the majority of my trip reports, I have not provided accurate site details for obvious reasons. Instead I’ve aimed to provide an idea of what can be seen on a dedicated mammal watching trip to Sri Lanka with little sleep and an outstanding guide. The Bird and Wildlife Team www.birdandwildlifeteam.com The Bird and Wildlife Team were extremely professional and a pleasure to deal with. The vehicle and driver they supplied were to an exceptional standard and all the accommodation and meals were excellent. We met several other guides from the company at various sites around the island. All were extremely friendly, knowledgeable and took an interest in our progress. Uditha certainly lived up to his reputation as a world class guide and naturalist. He went out of his way to make sure we had a memorable trip, managing to find the majority of our target species along with a few unexpected surprises. -

Based on published information and study of museum specimens, an upto date checklist of the bat fauna of India including 127 species in 40 genera is being provided. Additionaly, new distribution localities for Indian bat species recorded after Bates and Harrison, 1997 is also provided. Since the systematic status of many species occurring in the country is unclear, it is proposed that an integrative taxonomic approach may be employed to accurately quantify the bat diversity of India. Bats and Fruit Bats at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve
NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia Bats and fruit bats at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve Ingrid Kaipf, Hartmut Rudolphi and Holger Meinig 206 BATS Highlights ´ This is the first time a systematic bat assessment has been conducted in the Kafa BR. ´ We recorded four fruit bat species, one of which is new for the Kafa BR but not for Ethiopia. ´ We recorded 29 bat species by capture or sound recording. Four bat species are new for the Kafa BR but occur in other parts of Ethiopia. ´ We recorded calls of a new species in the horseshoe bat family for Ethiopia via echolocation. This data needs to be confirmed by capture, because there is a chance it could be a species of Rhinolophus new to science. ´ We suggest two flagship species: the long-haired rousette for the bamboo forest and the hammer-headed fruit bat for the Alemgono Wetland and Gummi River. ´ The bamboo forests had the most bat activity at night, but the Gojeb Wetland had the highest species richness due to its highly diverse habitats. ´ All caves throughout the entire Kafa BR should be protected as bat roosts. ´ It will be necessary to develop an old tree management concept for the biosphere reserve to protect and increase tree roosts for bats. 207 NABU’s Biodiversity Assessment at the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia 1.
