    Choreographic/Political Performances: Bodies, Spaces, Actions (Steven Cohen, Femen, Nuit debout) Michel Briand Abstract:Choreographic activism could be exemplified by three case studies: performances by Steven Cohen, esp. Coq/Cock, 2013; “sextremist” actions by the Femen, since 2012; Nuit debout (“Up all night!”), a democratic forum at the Place de la République, 2016. Some issues are crucial here: “dancing” social and political conflict and ethical/aesthetical interactions; deconstructing/constructing heterotopic spaces and utopian bodies; carnivalesque interplays of irony, critical thinking, spectacular celebration and denunciation; dialectics of discursive and synesthetic pragmatic and negotiation. These performances may also compare to anti-AIDS actions. This paper intends to study choreographic activism or artivism (i.e. art activism) in three context-specific case studies, considered through three main pragmatic perspectives: - Occupying and building up (heterotopic) spaces and times: where? when? - Standing up against and for (esthetic, ethic, and political) values : what? - Queering bodies, discourses, identities, and communities: who? how? But I first would like to state some epistemological and methodological prolegomena about the relation between dance and politics, relying both on ancient, esp. Greek, and recent scholarship on aestheticizing politics and politicizing aesthetics. Politics and dance: humanity and space, dissensus, carnival 1.     EYES WIDE OPEN: 100 YEARS OF LEICA PHOTOGRAPHY OCTOBER 24, 2014 – JANUARY 11, 2015 DEICHTORHALLEN HAMBURG / HOUSE OF PHOTOGRAPHY The exhibition EYES WIDE OPEN: 100 YEARS OF LEICA PHOTOGRAPHY curated by Hans-Michael Koetzle, illuminates various aspects of recent small-format photography, from journalistic strategies to documentary approaches and free artistic positions, spanning fourteen chapters. Among the artists whose work will be shown are Alexander Rodchenko, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Christer Strömholm, Robert Frank, Bruce Davidson, William Klein, William Eggleston, René Burri, Thomas Hoepker and Bruce Gilden. Following its premiere in the House of Photography at the Deichtorhallen Hamburg, the exhibition will travel to Berlin, Frankfurt and Vienna, among other locations. According to an entry in the workshop records, by March 1914 at the latest, Oskar Barnack, who worked as an industrial designer at Ernst Leitz in Wetzlar, completed the first functional model of a small-format camera for 35mm cinema film. The introduction of the Leica (a combination of »Leitz« and »Camera«) which was delayed until 1925 due to the war, was not merely the invention of a new camera; the small, reliable and always-ready Leica, equipped with a high-performance lens specially engineered by Max Berek, marked a paradigm shift in photography. Not only did it offer amateur photographers, newcomers and emancipated women greater access to photography; the Leica, which could be easily carried in a coat pocket, also became a ubiquitous part of everyday life. The comparatively affordable small-format camera stimulated photographic experimentation and opened up new perspectives. In general, visual strategies for representing the world became more innovative, bold and dynamic.

    ARTIST&INSIGHT Hiroji Kubota 08&Dec&2015 Hiroji&Kubota.&©&Dan&Szpara You currently have on show more than 100 of your photographs at both Sundaram Tagore and the Aperture Foundation – perhaps you could pick out which image you feel is most symbolic of your practice? For me, there are a few works which standout. Of the dye-transfers on show at Sundaram Tagore, it is my triptych of the Guilin Mountains in China from 1981 and my photograph of the Golden Rock of Burma from 1978. Then at the Aperture Foundation, where they have on display my earlier platinum prints from the 60s and 70s, my image of Shanghai in 1979 and Hong Kong in 1971 are especially symbolic. The works on show at Sundaram Tagore utilise the technique of dye-transfer printing, which you worked with in the 1980s. Please could you take us through this method of production? Producing works using the dye-transfer technique is extremely complex and time-consuming. With the help of the genius printer, Nino Mohnde, we would painstakingly print my photographs using 6 to 9 natural dye colours. The technique cannot be used today as the technology no longer remains. Capa worked on assignment or on staff for several agencies including Time-Life, Holiday, Sports Illustrated and more. He was the director or served as a founding member of Magnum Photos, The Associated Society of Magazine Photographers, and The Overseas Press Club. Capa wrote and photographed several photo essays as well as serving as the photographer for many books and corporate catalogs. He founded the Capa-Chim Memorial Foundation, the Fund for Concerned Photography, and eventually, the International Center of Photography, where he served as director until his death in 2008. Scope and Content Some multi-media materials have already been, or should be considered for Abstract: digital preservation including cassette tapes, VHS tapes, brittle and faded sheets.     Hasselbladstiftelsen Hasselblad Foundation Press Release Daido Moriyama Gothenburg, March 8, 2019 Hasselblad Award Winner 2019 The Hasselblad Foundation is pleased to announce that Japanese photographer Daido Moriyama is the recipient of the 2019 Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography for the sum of SEK 1,000,000 (approx. USD 110,000). The award ceremony will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden on October 13, 2019. A symposium will be held on October 14, followed by the opening of an exhibition of Moriyama’s work at the Hasselblad Center, and the release of a new book about the artist, published by Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König. The Foundation’s citation regarding the Hasselblad Award Laureate 2019, Daido Moriyama: »Daido Moriyama is one of Japan’s most renowned photographers, celebrated for his radical approach to both medium and subject.
