The Traveler 3 8 20
The Traveler Written by Jameel Saleem Based on the life of Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek ICM Partners Sheree Guitar Ent OVER BLACK: “We are on a journey to keep an appointment, with whatever we are.” - Gene Roddenberry 2. EXT. WHITE PLANET - NIGHT We open on a vast and barren expanse of desert. Mountains of white sands in every direction. The sky is nothing like we’ve ever seen on Earth. A burned out SUN covered in white ash. TWO MOONS appearing close enough to touch, lighting up the sky with a grey tint. In the distance, a FIERY OBJECT is rapidly falling toward the surface. We follow this UFO as it burns through the atmosphere and crashes out of sight, behind a giant sand dune. EXT. CRASH SITE - MOMENTS LATER Through the billows of smoke, a silhouetted figure climbs from the wreckage. As the figure staggers away from the ship, the moonlight hits, revealing the figure of a HUMAN BOY. CLOSE UP on the boy’s face as he peers out at the expansive desert -- MATCH CUT TO: EXT. BACKYARD/LOS ANGELES - DAY C/U on a YOUNG GENE RODDENBERRY, 8, golden blonde hair. The same boy from the UFO, except here he looks pale and sickly. We pull out to reveal Gene standing in the middle of a small perennial GARDEN in a backyard. CHYRON: 1929 Gene looks around as if he’s exploring a new world. He speaks into an old tin cigarette case: GENE This is a distress call from Captain Gene Roddenberry of the United States Galactic Squadron. -

Scandaglia It is universally agreed that breast feeding presents the safest, healthiest and most eco- i H arkness nomical means of nourishing an infant. Nature is generous with this gift, providing 96% i of the women in the world with the ability to nourish their babies independent of any I outside source of food, according to the Infant Formula Coalition (INFACT). Howev- Ser, many mothers, especially poor mothers, allow this resource to go untapped, turningii instead to inferior, laboratory produced baby formulas. SCountless women in the United States and in Third World nations make this choice, Screating a $1.7 billion world market, according to The Wall Street Journal. While form- I ula companies attribute this tremendous demand to the necessity of a breast feeding 1 Salternative, especially for poverty-stricken mothers, formula opponents contend that these products are most dangerous in the hands of the poor, since they are least able to I undertake safe feeding practice. SFirst and foremost amongst the difficulties of the poor in safe formula feeding is their inability to cope on a regular basis with the cost of the formula. According to a U.N. subcommittee on infant feeding, the cost- of proper bottle feeding is about'$1 Sper day in the United States and about half the daily wage in developing nations. -

Theteacher began a discussion of the nature of language, meaning and the significance of literacy by discussing an episode of STNG entitled "Darmok" in which an alien race spoke only in metaphor. Humor is present in many episodes of "Star Trek," as wellas concepts like the power of fear. Cultural differences are explored in a number of episodes of STNG. The teacher uses "Star Trek"as an introduction to a lesson and as an impetus for story writing. One of the most enduring qualities of the three series is their focuson problem solving, which can serve as demonstrations for students. The series are also used for teaching the technique of role playing. Episodes of STNG and of "Deep Space 9" can be used to teach contentareas such as English, mathematics, history, physics, chemistry, and biology: "Clues" involves an examination ofspace and time; "Drumhead" involves a Joe McCarthy-like investigator; "Cause and Effect" involves a time loop; "Time's Arrow," involving backward timetravel and Mark Twain; "Emissary" deals with guilt, responsibility, and explaining the nature of time to an immortal-ace; and "The Forsaken" which involves a "shape-shifting" character. -

John Byrne · Newsarama Interview
TALKINGSTARTREKWITHJOHNBYRNE BY BENJAMIN ONG PANG KEAN · NEWSARAMA On January 2nd, 2008, IDW announced the second stage of their plans for the Star Trek franchise and joining them for the ride through the galactic quadrants is living legend John Byrne. Byrne will first conclude the Alien Spotlight series of one-shots with February’s Star Trek: Alien Spotlight: Romulans, where the comics icon will write, pencil and ink a tale of loyalty, betrayal and intrigue involving the distant cousins of the Vulcans. In May, Byrne time warps back to Earth of the 20th century together with the intergalactic superspy, Gary Seven in a five-issue limited series, Star Trek: Assignment Earth. For the uninitiated, “Assignment: Earth” was also the season two finale for Star Trek, the original series. The episode, which introduced Seven, Roberta Lincoln and Seven’s cat and partner Isis, was originally intended by Trek creator Gene Roddenberry as the pilot for a spin-off series that never came to pass. In that episode, the gang from the Enterprise also time warped back to 1968 where Kirk, Spock and the crew encountered Seven. Seven has previously appeared in DC’s non-canonical Star Trek comics as well as New York Times best-selling sci-fi author Greg Cox’s Star Trek novels, specifically the two-volume The Eugenics Wars, and Assignment: Eternity. Forty years after his first appearance, Byrne will bring the late Roddenberry’s dream to life, continuing the tale of the interstellar time traveler as his Earth-born assistant as “they covertly confronts threats to the past so that they can save the Star Trek future.” We sat down with Byrne, who’s also illustrating Wayne Osborne’s March-debuting FX from IDW, about all things Star Trek. -
