By Emilianna George The Greek letter “π” is the symbol used in mathematical equations to represent a constant number. Pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits past its decimal point. As an irrational and transcendental number, it will con- tinue infinitely without repetition or pattern. While only a handful of digits are needed for typical calcula- tions, Pi’s infinite nature makes it a fun challenge to memorize, and to calculate more and more digits. The Greek letter was first used in 1706 by William Jones. The use of the sign “π” became popular after the Swiss math- ematician Leonhard Euler adopted it in 1737. Pi day was officially celebrated on a large scale in 1988 at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Since then, Pi Day has been celebrated by millions of students and math-lovers each year.
